  • My original video was taken down due to copyright, so rather than just re edit and upload that old video, I decided to give it a remaster, with new scenes and HD graphics. Hope you enjoy

tf you mean, even as a non-Pokémon fan this movie was fun as fuck
It most definitely broke the videogame movie curse. Ever since we've been getting a ton more good videogame related movies/tv shows

What you mean this premiered the same year as Endgame!?? Man, time really does fly by.
In all honesty, this movie is just alright. I'm not too interested in other aspects of the franchise other than the mainline games (at least up to Gen 5) and maybe the manga, so I had very little reference as to how Pokémon handled the anime or its movies. I came with no expectations and I felt this movie was ok, but apart from the novelty of seeing the hybrid animation for the Pokémon themselves (which I'm mixed on for how overly detailed they look) there's not much else to come back to. As you pointed out there were cool set pieces and concepts, but I feel that if you took everything related to Pokémon and kept the basic premise and mystery the movie is closer to a Disney Channel Original than a blockbuster summer film.
I think the merit of being a videogame adaptation that people could actually enjoy can't be taken away from it, but it'd be nothing special in a hypothetical market where those are much more common.

I think you’re connecting your personal opinion of the movie a bit too much to the lack of a sequel. I don’t have any sort of inside knowledge, but I’m guessing the reasons are:
    1. Pandemic
    2. Writers/Actors strike
    3. Relatively small company for the scope of the franchise, with other priorities
Sure, the Sonic movies were somehow able to navigate similar issues, but I think those are far more important than what you attributed to it.

I think how they could've solved the "how did Tim not realize Pikachu was his dad" plothole was in the shot at 15:42, they could have used a different actor to play the human verson of Tims dad instead of Ryan Reynolds. Everybody knows what Ryan Reynolds sounds like, so the audience would know that Tim's father sounds different than Pikachu.

Seems like you wanted this to be a drawn-out TV series rather than a movie. The pacing and other elements worked out for me.

As someone who actually played detective pikachu and enjoy it, this movie was a massive disappointment. Many characters that were important in the game were just cut, the bright colors are replaced with a dreary look (Just to make it dark), and the game's fun well paced story was replaced with fast pace scenes and stuff that doesn't makes. Detective pikachu isn't a masterpiece, but it was a fun game for what it was and it didn't deserved to have a terrible movie.
