  • The German recipe's a bit of a word salad comment, so edited here for clarity: Prime with Vallejo Field Grey primer, drybrush Stone Grey over jackets and such.
Basecoat skin with AP Topaz Skin, bread bags and StG ammo pouches with VJ Khaki, water bottles with VJ Flat Earth, gas mask containers and mess tins in VJ Camo Olive Green, and any pack rolls with US Dark Green.
Rifles and wood with VJ Beige Brown, black leather and boots with VJ Black Grey, then brown leather straps and slings with VJ German Camo Black Brown.
    Helmets with VJ German Grey.
White cloth basecoated in VJ Ivory, and finally black bits on weapons painted VJ Black.
Wash the whole thing in Sonic Tonic (link below), and highlight faces with GW Cadian Fleshtone then GW Kislev Flesh, highlight white cloth with either fresh VJ Ivory or VJ Off-White, and job's done.

Long time viewer here. Wanted to thank you for your work over the years. Love your content and overall positivity that shines in all your videos. Your pianting instructions are always clear and concise. And very acheivable even for beginners. I am very glad that you are fine and look forward to many more videos. Cheers!

Wonderful to have you back! I have learned so much watching your channel and do not really need to watch any other. You really managed to inspire me to begin painting again. I have been away from painting for the better of 25 years, playing with dull plastic dudes :) But now I am working on my Guard army and your vids help a lot. Thank you for you. Cheers from Denmark :)

You’ve been an inspiration for me since the day I started painting! In fact, your video of doing the speedpaint US soldier years ago led me to stop overthinking, and got me through my first ever complete army. And this year, your easygoing and encouraging style of video, and especially hearing your interview on Bedroom Battlefields, gave me the boost to try making a how-to video of my own! So thank you again - and so glad you’ve gotten in both a break and a new energy!

Welcome back mate, completely understand about the heat, been very muggy up here in Hamburg as well! Also wanted to say thanks for all your work, whenever I am in doubt about a painting project I pop over to your channel and find some inspiration! Looking forward to seeing the Romans as I'm about to dabble with them myself 😊

I just want to say keep up the good work and thanks for all the great content. And maybe try not to feel pressured by fomo? I could see the potential for burnout if you feel like you have to paint something that you dont want to.
The best thing about your painting tutorials is the diversity of all the cool models you do. If i look for a certain style or effect i can always scroll through your videos and apply it, even if its a different model/setting or whatever.

Glad you’re back. “They aren’t gloriously well painted” - Hah! They look great. On your worst day your painting is better than mine on my best day.
I’ve got some Warlord Epic Napoleonic British to see if I can paint something that small.
Really looking forward to your promised video on painting the new Victrix Mounted Knights. If I haven’t succumbed beforehand I intend to pick up some of those at Partizan in October, along with the Wargames Atlantic Foot Knights.

I'd say that "inspiration struck" with the winter German army. It looks great, and the Republican romans aren't going anywhere (one would think 🙂)! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle those and *definitely* intrigued by this Great War teaser! I'll take as much Great War stuff as you're willing to put out! And, thanks again for all your time and effort! Cheers!

Your painting is exemplary - good to see you and hear from you💜💜
I know what you mean though, and perfectionism can lead to procrastination, and there's a whole load of psychology behind such. A fine line between wanting to improve and do one's best - most good modellers are like that, always seeking to do better.
I often build, create something that I feel isn't as good as it could be. So I pop it on the shelf, go back to it in three months, see if I can live with it or not🤔😉
I model large scale railways - albeit a modest railway - and I've prepared figures for coaches but I can't bring myself to paint them. I may get someone else to do it! I've also an RC boat and car to do - sometimes that feels overwhelming 😲😲💜
Funny how something we love, like model making, can also trip us up psychologically, but it can teach us a lot about ourselves too.
Anyway enough of my waffle, your work looks great and having stand off, partially detailed models, needs some thought, a bit like false shading or hinting at detail - hoping for a happy mistake can be a good starting point for me 😀🤔👍✌️💜💜👍

Honestly, those models look fantastic! Stack on the fact you did it in a week, and it's mind blowing. Meanwhile, I've spent the entire week trying to finish a single Hammerfall bunker xD
Also, I can sympathize with seemingly minor difficulties throwing you off your groove. It's definitely happened to me a few times with painting! Even wound up taking a few months off painting due to it this last year.

Hi Sonic! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets oddly inspired to hobby in July. I am currently working away on the Skaventide Rattie half! I was curious if you plan to cover the skaven or the stormcast in this set?
With the stormcast up next, I'd also love to hear how you'd go about painting them as either living lightning (if thats even possible) or living statues!
As ever, your videos are super appreciated, and I contribute a lot of my skills in painting to your tutorials! Keep up the great work!

I'm recently getting over a massive bought of the "can't evens" and your videos are always the inspiration I need to soldier on and get stuff done. My problem is that I get way too precious with the detailing of my minis. You’ve been missed. Totally understand how new minis can send you a curve ball. Lack of sleep will always knock you off kilter. Those winter Germans look awesome I’d be happy to have those on my table. This is gaming standard not golden demon. I don’t want to spend a week or more on one miniature that requires tonnes of different paints and effects. They look great but the hobby is table top war gaming. Gaming be the word. I’m just reorganising my work space as I have found that having loads of to do stuff round me has given me lots of anxiety about which to do first and I don’t have enough time…. What time I’m retired I have the rest of my life. Still anxiety was there. Now have a stack of really useful boxes to keep stuff in. Back on track now. Stay safe. And stay strong. 💪

Ah, nothing quite like hitting a single minor roadblock on a project and halting everything while your brain questions how to overcome this monumental hurdle. The true neurodivergent experience. 😅
I draw paper minis for my hobby (far easier for me than painting, and far cheaper too), and my recent projects have been stalling something awful as I get caught in wanting to make them so perfect that I never draw them to begin with. Someday I'll finally internalize that "okay-ish but finished" is better than "perfect but never started."
