So, the answer to the "open feed or patties" question is ... yes :-) It looks like you are really on something with this idea that bees react first to short term availability.
Thanks for all the info. I'm in Ontario and have been watching and learning for the last year and a half. I appreciate you taking time to show us your tricks. Still saving but hopefully next season I will be ready.
Good luck Ian and wish for you a fruitful 2021 beekeeping season. Here in Lebanon a colony is considered ready for gathering honey if it has at least 8 frames of closed brood 30 days before the nectar flow period. Here because we grow the bees in the mountains, the nectar gathering is a more difficult job for the bees than an open horizon fields such as what you have in Canada, which will facilitate gathering more nectar by the bees and so produce more honey. Best Regards of peace and health
Thank you so much for sharing this video your job is very hard job and of course pay off to see this hard-working creatures so busy to make a good family a good honey really appreciate that they close up video it's always nice to see their work and of course yours too stay healthy be happy peace
Looking nice IAN Sir. It is nothing but rain here with a high around 48 for tomorrow. It has set things back a week at the farm. Hope by a week from sunday can do first splits. Cells will be ready by then if this weather dont crash it all. Take care and stay safe. There for a min i was dam IAN feeling the blues lol
Cold coffee happy bees what could be better ?Well popped lid off some hives to remove suppers the i put on last year to give the enough honey to get through winter and some are getting filled up and capped off all ready .the rape seed has just come out its been cold wet no cappings under brood box so not from there .Just goes to show the bees lead and we have to follow till we can get one step ahead .Used foamies last year and that has made big differance Many thanks Ian
Dear Ian, First of all, I have to say... your work and organisation is very good( almost perfect :) ). Before 3 months I discover your channel and I was impressed. Based on your 6's videos I immediately started build my 5's on DB frame. Two hives, the same bottom board, a common honeycomb. Please, do you have video for 6's - One year - One video! That will be very interesting.... And can you make a video with comparing standard hive and multi-queen 6's? At the end of the message, I take the opportunity to wish you much success in your further work. Greetings from Serbia.
The opening of this video reminded me of my Cherry grower. As I was moving bees into cherries he asked me if my bees have all been vaccinated? I said, " No, but they'll vaccinate YOU!"

I consider trees and shrubs here in Northest Kansas much more important than wildflowers for pollen and honey. LOL, just put patties on my new replacement packages and we are expecting 4 inches snow tonight. Unbelievable.
Your way ahead of us here in Alberta I just got the bees out yesterday at +4, Next week our forecast is for teens all week so I’m hoping that they will “pop” and get going!

Is that amitraz strips you're putting in I have found it does kill Queen's last autumn 100 hives were strong put strips in no problem good might drop this spring thought would use them again colonies nucs with plenty of bees no problem at all but small nucs with 2 or 3 frames of bees everyone one the Queen disappeared after putting in one amitraz strip lost about 8 Queens so If weak it is better to cut the strips in half or risk losing Queens.
Interesting. I’m just a hobbyist but the same thing happened to me with a couple of my weaker hives. I looked in all of my hives a month ago, finding the queens in all, I put strips in all the hives and lost the queens in the two weaker hives. I might stick to just oxalic acid treatments more often.
Lookin' good, boss! My first round has been emerging this week. The frames are full of eggs. If the brood doesn't chill, I'll have boomers by the end of April.
It drives me crazy the number of beekeepers who clean the tops off frames but not all of them! Ian is seen here cleaning off frames then immediately not cleaning a frame then plopping down a paddy on top of a mound of burr comb. I can actually hear the top squeezing the paddy into submission!

Old hat.
How do you decide if it is an old hat or a new hat type of day?
Ha ha ha , going up town, going to work :)
What kind of tree species have you got growing around your apiaries that produce good amounts of nectar? Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)?
Do I remember correctly that the blue tags identify hives with potential breeder queens?
Blue is strong, multiple blue year after year identifies Breeders

That could be true , possible, the reason why the hive was small was due to a failing queen which maybe the Apivar just finished off

Isn’t that the truth! I think we might need to be ready to make splits , unless mother N throws us a curve
Is there pollen or nectar from those cottonwood trees or is there another tree. I’ve got pollen coming in didn’t even know it would happen this early.
Poplar and silver maple for sure along with boxelder.
Ian things look good.👊 I should know by now do you drop strips in the spring and only do OA in the fall? Have you tested for m
Ya, Apivar in the spring seems to hold them until late fall for an OAV
Hi Ian where do you get those strips for the mites in Canada
Bee Maid
I noticed that is Carrie's hive tool and Carrie's suit. . .are you using Carrie's smoker too? 🤣
We don't see any pail feeding till date. Is there any reason for it?
Open feeding
Looking good now you just need the crops to do as well as the bees and you will run out of honey supers. :~)
Still waiting for the first cleansing flight here in western Alaska. Hopefullly next week

Perico, they are good
Thank you for responding.
Sugar or corn syrup?

So much burr comb this year Ian. Is there always that much?
Looks like you have a lot of frames of bees in each hive plus lots of brood larva and eggs, this video and last. Any concern of swarming?
The hives are just making the winter to spring transition, no swarming pressure yet
Can yo sponsor me a bee suit ? I would love to get into it would be life changing for me

As of today we have spent the week and all the patties are now in. Before this week, the previous 3 weeks, it was too cold and windy to work hives .
This is considered an early pollen flow here
Yes the pollen is early, maybe the earliest I have seen but that bodes well for a good spring build up.
