Hogan wants to be top dog wherever he is, the problem is one day you have to pass the torch and WWE/Vince wasn't offering top Dog spot so he stayed in WCW. Hogan only came back to WWE after WCW was dead and he had no choice for one last payday so he had no choice but to pass the torch to Rock
I don't think he passed the torch to anybody remember in 2006 he left WWE to go to TNA because he did not want to be one of the boys he did not want to be told what to do anymore.
He volunteered to put over Goldberg in WCW. He played along with Russo's shit booking and put over Billy Kidman to show he was a team player. He also let Piper beat him clean earlier. I think in WCW he wasn't as bad as he was in WWF where he had to be the ultimate good guy beating Yokozuna for a title after Bret lost at Mania.
Also, putting over The Rock has never been a sour spot for him. He seems proud of what they did.

I think at this point Vince had finally bought out all of the others who owned a percentage of the company. Gorilla Monsoon owned a piece at one time. Perhaps Arnold Skaaland and Bruno?I doubt he would have given or sold Hulk anything.
I know for a fact that part of that deal with guys like Gorilla and Skaaland, and this may have also been as a favor to his father, was that they would be employed for life.

So when people say the nWo angle was getting tired and you look and see what they were doing on WWF television in 2000, nothing but a rehash of the nWo.
Hogan was not underpaid by any stretch of the imagination so he should have be happy with with he got from WWE. He mismanaged his money plus he lost a good chunk in the divorce so now he wants something from WWE because he is disabled and unable to wrestle. That's not WWE's problem. There are plenty of wrestlers who put in the effort for WWE and are in much worse financial shape than Hogan. They were paid a lot less than Hogan, but it is what it is....that's just the way life is. And there are guys like Horowitz who never got to the top but earned steady money, saved his money and invested carefully, and did not live extravagant lifestyles like Hogan. Maybe if Hogan sold his toys and adopted a lifestyle which matches his portfolio he would not be begging WWE for stock shares.
You missed a glaring point that Hogan always thought this - even when he was financially set. When Eric explains how he knew Hogan wasn't going back he states that Hogan didn't need the money but the old issue was about having a piece of ownership in the company. He mentions the 10's of millions going back to when he first met Hogan but that issue between Hogan and Vince was still there.
@@1980Triumph Hogan's contracts were for cash not equity in the company. If the company stock fizzled he would not have demanded a share of the equity. Hogan was just another wrestler employee, not an owner. He couldn't even manage his own money least of all be on the board of directors of the company.
This is a story that happened in 1997, not today. For Hogan to jump ship from WCW to the WWF back then, after everything that happened between him and Vince, he wanted shares in the company. He's not asking for shares in 2023.
@@paxlux5288 he got paid whatever his contract stated. Hogan could have bought shares in the company if he though it was that great. Evidently he did not, unwilling to take the risk. He was a minority owner in the WCW which did not turn out so great.

The company went public on October 19, 1999, with its initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "WWE." So Vince was probably getting ready to go public in 1997 and Hogan probably wanted in before the public offering. That would have been a huge deal especially since WWF went from bankrupt to boom in a quick span. But who knows the reason why this didn't happen.

Fast forward to 2024 and TKO owns 51% of the WWE while Vince is considering selling his portion. Guess stepth and Shane never got a piece of owning the WWE either.

Saying HHH was never a superstar or great, really is a big knock. He might not be the Rock or Austin, but in the attitude ERA he was a big star and a phenomenal heel and he’s always been a better heel than face. And look, guys who are mostly heels rarely are the face of the company, but if he wasn’t great, no one would have cared about those feuds, no matter who the face were. Triple H became popular as a heel, sold lots of merch, we can never forget him going out a heel with an injury and coming back as a face to one of the loudest most sustained pops ever.
I’m not a HHH fanboy, he was never my favorite. But to say he wasn’t great is a slight.

Triple H was way overpushed. Glorified body builder who's only real talents were spitting water and pouting for the camera. Stephanie is the only reason he is where he is.

Well, the first 10 years was built on his back. Since then, many others have helped but he was the face. After him, there was always 2 to 3 carrying the company, but Hogan and Vince built it into tbe global phenomenon
Giving Hogan way to much credit. Without anyone on the other side it doesn't work so without piper, Andre and so on Hogan is nothing.
@@chadjustice8560You undermine your own argument by listing a few of the likely large pool of people that could have been used to counter Hogan. They were vital as a role but others could fill the void. Without Hogan, and whatever he had that people bought into, WWF would not have been on the same trajectory at that time. Hogan appears to have tons of flaws when put under a microscope but he was the right person in the right place at the right time to accelerate WWF and wrestling in general to what it became.
People always say this and its made me start thinking.
Mind you, that this is just food for thought, because I don't think we can answer this question without a time machine.
But was Hulk "the guy" to make wrestling what it is today, or was he just "right place, right time" to be swept up as Vince turned wrestling into what it is today? Like, he just happened to be the face of the company, when Vince was changing wrestling and reaching audiences it never would have reached before (while also kneecapping the territories to kill off competition)
Like there was no shortage of talented talkers Vince could have put as the face of the company, would they have been as popular as hulk if they had the push hulk had when he had it?
I mean hell, Macho Man's popularity endures to this day, perhaps even stronger than Hulk's (though that is mainly due to outside factors) there could be a timeline where it was Macho Mania and Randy bodyslammed Andre at wrestlemania III.

Savage was great but Hogan's bodybuilder look sold him well. His amazing on screen charisma and personality helped him even more.
WWF would have never grown with any wrestler in the 80s.
Hogan became the champion at the right time and Vince decided to push WWF that was never done before.
Everything went in Hogan's favor.

People need to stop undermining Hogan. He's one of the most complete wrestlers ever. The only knock on him is how formulaic he became, but you don't build a billion dollar company without producing a lot of product.
The ironic thing about this is Vince didn’t think Hogan turning heel would be good for business only to try & buy Hulk back after his heel turn lol shows you that a lot of the time Vince doesn’t see how good things are for the business unless they’re his ideas lol

Imo, part of it was the fact hogan was the star, but Vince never let anybody be bigger than the brand. Hulk thought he deserved a % of WWE, Vince thought hulk is just a worker etc

Glad Hogan didn't come back in '97. Watching the Austin 3:16 phenomenon - then touted by the Kellers and Meltzers as the biggest thing since Hulkamania - up close and personal would have crushed the Hogan ego. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to visualise Hogan sneakily working to sabotage and outshine Austin.

I was a WCW fan, so before i knew anything about the backstage happenings, it bothered me when people years later would say Eric didn’t know what he was doing or he ran the company in to the ground. But after hearing Eric talk so much about that time, you see he really didn’t know what he was doing and he was and is too egotistical to even fairly analyze his decisions. A feud between Goldberg and Hogan/nwo could have provided 6 months of great tv ratings, but he threw all that away for 1 episode. No feud at all, no build up, just announce a few days before that a match was happening. And the fact that all these years later he still can’t see it just shows how bad he really was at this. We know hogan was running the show and I guess he just can’t ever admit that.
That big money over in wcw and less duties.. Or go back to wwe with all the extra out ring stuff and probably less money.. Its a no brainer. Plus hogan being the figurehead of wcw. With free reign of creative control or at least he had some kind of final out come and overall direction of the match or angle etc..

The meeting that took place has been confirmed by several parties. What was discussed is always up for debate.
1. how many wrestlers get a piece of the promotion without investing their personal wealth into the promotion? by my count i can't think of a single one.
2. wwe didn't have anything to offer hogan but money that would be worthwhile for him to go back to wwe. the nwo gimmick was WCW's so the entire reason for his resurgence would've been lost if he went to WWE
You can’t take credit from Hogan, but at the end of the day if it wasnt Hogan in the spotlight, it would’ve been someone else. And it was someone else the moment Hogan left. The exponential growth the WWE had *after* Hogan left cant be ignored either. All and all, I’d reckon thats he’s just another cog in the wheel.
It suffered greatly after he left though. The resurgence came about in changing to adapt to the competition (who also had Hogan), not just through their own genius.

After Hogan left, WWF really struggled and almost went bankrupt by 1995. If it wasn’t for Steve Austin, the WWF wouldn’t exist. It’s not like it’s super easy to replace a guy like Hogan.

I'm not going to take away all credit from Hogan, but I'm also not going to give him all of the credit.
There were dozens of hard working wrestlers and promotors in the mid-90s who deserve just as much credit or more than Hogan, or even Austin.
All in all, the 90s was a weird and transitional point in American culture. A single man couldn't influence it, he could only take advantage of it. That's just what Hogan did, he rode the waves.
And with that, I'm done with this conversation. Agree, disagree, that's up to you. I feel like I expressed my opinion clearly enough.

The Bruno Samartinos weren't going to be be the flag carriers for the then next generation. I was watching it happen. As far as wrestlers go Hogan and Stone Cold may have saved wrestling from its demise.

Funny because had Hogan left then in '98, WCW could've still had a chance before he really helped speed up it's decline in in early 1999. Yeah starrcade '97's finish still would've happened, but without his bad politics which were only getting worse by then talent morale and hope would've been a lot higher
