I've been using Pika for all sorts of stuff and I was really, really glad to hear that they're interested in making a tool for "the rest of us." So many tools try to shoot for the "industry standard" target and then end up leaving those of us who just want to have fun or do smaller projects in the dust (especially financially with the $$ of subs). Really hoping to get into Pika 1.0 soon.
Krea has been blowing my mind all over the place lately. The real-time generation is super fun and invaluable for prototypes, but the upscaler (as mentioned) is just brilliant. Also, the AI Patterns and Logo Illusions have tons of potential as well. Overall, just a really amazing suite of tools. I cannot wait to see what happens with their implementation of AnimateDiff. If it has the quality and utility of the rest of their tools, it's gonna be lights out.

Hey Cory! It’s funny, I’ve got this whole rant that I’ve been developing on “industry standard” and how that it shouldn’t matter.
When After Effects 1.0 launched, it wasn’t industry standard. As the same with so many other commonplace tools. They became that because people made amazing work, and pipelines had to be developed on both sides to make that bridge happen.
I think I’m going to make a video about that soon- but currently it’s still in the rant phase and kind of gets soapbox-y!
I have a lot of respect for someone that doesn't just complain about the tools they're given - they set about to make better ones
Seriously. So much admiration for them. I don’t get married to any of the tools (I cover too many of them, so I try to stay agnostic), but since way back in the clown/mime days of Pika, I’ve been very bullish that there is something special about them.
Out painting videos to widescreen is going to be nuts, especially for cartoons. Imagine watching Batman the animated series in widescreen. Sure, many dislike "tampering", but I like seeing fanmade editions and "ai remasters".... it's a way to bring new life to beloved media.

I’m always fine with those fan edits or whatnot. I mean, it doesn’t take anything away from the original. Unless you’re Lucas and actively removing the old versions- but that’s another story.

I have this worry that someone has found a way to weaponize this to kill the opposition! (I'm not the first to think this!!!!) .
Oh, happy to report that it did kind of fade out. Still, it was a good wake up call to remind me that a channel on UA-cam is like owning a restaurant built on top of a volcano.

I’m 50/50 on 8. 9 is a dumpster fire for me. But yeah, on the whole- doing fan edits might be a super niche in the future.
To be honest, I don’t know if I love or hate that idea, but it is baked into Star Wars culture. Ever since George started tinkering with the OT, I think that gave fans permission to do the same.

I think there’s a perception that they’re falling behind, but what I think is happening is they’re priming to drop a major game changer.

The short scale? I LOVE it! But, I’m also one of those guitar players who is faking it at bass.
Still, that short scale is awesome, make me feel like I can fly all over the place.
To be honest, when it comes to bass, I’m just guitar soloing with a groove. Seems to work about 50% of the time!
It's easy to look at this, and envision a day in the not-so-distant future, where we enter multiple prompts, and we get a full length movie.
I'm hearing by 2025. I think we'll see the early stabs at it in late 24. In 25 we'll get something that kinda works-- but by 26, it'll be commonplace.

I'd say Pika should monatize but also offer daily free credits for enthusiasts and hobbyists enough for them to experiment with the tech and decide whether they want to go more professional and sub or stay hobbyists.
Kinda like how Suno AI does it (an AI site for generating AI music and songs), I really love their model a lot and have considered subbing after seeing the quality of their songs and experimenting with it for a few weeks, specially when I start getting into creating songs in a more professional fashion (considering that they offer custom lyrics now).
IMO Suno AI monetization model is the best, most sustainable and most fair bussiness model (Runway ML has to be the worst monatization model in comparison)

The main stream movie industry must be breaking into a sweat right now.
I’ve used it for a few weeks to animate some of my pictures. It is very decent but being limited to 3 seconds, 5-10 would be great or the ability to continue promoting the images over and over to create a scene with the same image. Maybe with time. MidJourney is the best art generator so far.
I think 5 to 6 would be pretty great. There are some tricks to get there, namely involving slowing the footage down, but it is tough to get longer dynamic shots.
We’re still less than a year into ai video (a little more, but not commercially), and we’ve come a long way in a little bit- I’d say by 24 you’ll get that.
…and from what I’m hearing, a LOT more!

This sounds promising. I am really interested in how "complex" the shot can be and how well the Ai will understand the prompt.
An issue I have come across with Runway myself is that I am almost always better off just finding an image and using that rather than a text prompt. For example, in the last week I have been looking to get a 4 - 8 second animated clip of a city under siege protected by a magical barrier and to say that this has been an absolute nightmare to get feels like an understatement. I still do not have a good shot to represent this. I thought about breaking up the shops with a shorter clip focused on the magical barrier and a second clip on the city and that still isn't getting me something remotely fitting. I am a bit stumped on this one haha.
It feels like text to video has gotten a LOT better. Check out this video on Moonvalley (which admittedly is a few weeks old, and in AI terms is ancient), where you can see how much more consistent text to video has become. As for your shot? Well, we’re only a little bit away from video inpainting!
Currently: I might think about running the shot twice: one of the magical barrier, and then one of the siege (with a photo reference) and then masking them together into one shot.

AI video companies almost always put out amazing trailers and not one that I have seen has stood up to that quality yet (obviously they would cherry pick the most successful videos). I'm interested to try this out if I can get access.
From what I understand, the rollout might be slow, but everyone will eventually get access. And yeah, cherry picking is part of the game (that’s really the work), but at the cost of free, can we complain?
cherry picking is just the core of generative art. You're always going to get a bunch of with some gems. What's important if you DO get the gems. And coming from a traditional background as a photographer, I can say even THERE in a typical photo shoot I'll go from potentially hundreds or even thousands of shots down to just a handful of keepers.
This is because in most cases the user gives little or limited description of what he wants. We have to think that as much as "intelligence" is, it is dumb. So you need to give as much description as possible in each type of art you want.

I'm going to have to play around with the KREA image upscaler a bit. I'm not sure how I feel about it being a straight upscaler though. More for upscaling with a flare. Otherwise, I just use Upscayl locally. Especially for batch processing. I made a whole video on it a month ago or so.
Yeah, I mean honestly I invested in Topaz, so I’ll generally use that as an upscaler. But I do like the whole idea of sort of remixing at the same time as an experimental process.
Yeah, Pika is def a furlong or more in the lead. (gotta get a horse race reference in there). With the image gen, I've used for moodboards, assets, various other graphic material and just brainstorming. But with video it would require it to be further along before I could truly use it. At this point it would require more work than it's worth but it's getting there really fast! I feel the one thing that will be the stigma regarding video is the blurriness between frames as well as the scattered artifacting. Image Gen still has that issue but a somewhat easy fix. I do feel environments or some distant landscape scenes can work with video. Or anything that might be a bit out of focus. But this is exciting. It's put some fire behind the ass of these other companies to get caught up and not forgotten.
I think it has a great use currently as stock- and one thought i had with video inpainting while I was being a full lunatic and examining frame by frame: I think if you’ve got some compositing skills, you can hide a lot of those inconsistencies with smoke and lighting effects.
…I guess, literally, smoke and mirrors.
But that said, yeah, all of it is going to take a lot of work to “fix it in post” haha, I guess some things never change!
very true - the one thing you hear on set from time to time, "we'll fix it in post" haha. I do some compositing from time to time and throwing some slight volumetric fog is definitely a go-to in some cases. @@TheoreticallyMedia

There are so many thousands on the waitlist (at least 3,000) it will take forever to get to me, and I'm their biggest fan (partly because I absolutely detest Runway) I tack the short videos together using the Final Frame to make a chain (Final Frame has also just gotten a spectacular upgrade (with hardly any developers I hear.)
I love what Ben is going with Final Frame! Big supporter of him! I actually had a bit in this video on it, but it got cut for time. Kinda of disrupted the flow- but I was curious (looking at the pika web Ui) if they don’t have something similar planned.

Too bad I'm not renewing my Pro membership with MJ now that they've FINALLY realized that they need to focus enough of their time and hundreds of $$$millions on a functional AP. But they've dillidallied too much with all sorts of not so important features for way too long that they're no longer anywhere near the top of the AI generative image game.
Over the past nearly 3 months I've barely spent any time on MJ compared to the previous 12 to 18 months.
Too bad I can't gift other MJ users my fast hours because I'd have given away all of them since at least October.
It was nice knowing MJ. Maybe someday they will get on track and focus a lot more of their ENORMOUS resources where it matters most.
