I’m now a retired Army Infantryman and I served on Active Duty from 1983-2009 and in 1986 I was sent to a 5 week long school to use the M-21 sniper rifle system and later used it in sniper competitions and did very well. We could engage an 8” diameter target at 1,000 yards with little difficulty (8” is about the size of a human head) but your spotter better know how to call wind and you better trust his call which I did. We replaced the M-21 with the M-24 in late 1987 in the 2/502nd INF, 101st ABN. The 21 is a very demanding system to sustain that level of accuracy and the 24 was a huge shift albeit a loss of semi auto in a pinch but we never loaded more than one round per firing, we always top loaded one round at a time per shot. Each line company in our Bn had to have a minimum of 2 qualified sniper teams and that included me in Delta Company where we were an 11H (Anti Armor) company and not 11B Light Infantry. The only people that went to that school was Infantry, Special Forces Operators and a couple Military Police now and then. So if an MP Veteran tells you he’s sniper qualified, he’s not lying. We had our own sniper school on Ft. Campbell, KY since at the time the Army didn’t want to wave around the fact that we were training new Snipers, the public was concerned about one of us going postal and reaping a harvest of liberals on a college campus again. Finally in 1987 the Ft. Benning, GA DoD Sniper School opened up and we shut down our school on Campbell. Our instructors were Mr. White and Mr. Bosworth who were Vietnam Veterans who were Snipers in the 101st and we had about 24 students (12 teams) her class. We used Range 1 for the 1,000 yard scope range and the old 600 yard KD range near the Air Assault school for iron sights and yes, we fired 600 yards with iron sights but they were HUGE targets.
@@hankczinaski915 I thought the same thing back then. My guess was to reduce the chance of doubling since we had triggers set at 3.5lbs. Or, it was to reduce action movement. After school was done we just stuck with the single round loading for training and competitions but we knew if we were in a combat environment we’d have fully loaded magazines. We were using 173 gr. OTM ammo so it wasn’t ball ammo.
Highschool of the Dead. If it wasn't for the frustratingly huge amount of fan service it would have been a solid zombie apocalypse show. Even by normal anime standards it was on the extreme end.
It’s a good rifle if you spend $4K for a perfect one but they’re remarkably finicky and the AR10 platform is just better. My DPMS LR308 at $1100 worked better out of the box than my Springfield. Now my Fulton Armory in its EBR chassis is crazy accurate and sexy as hell but at $4500 it better be.
If you have read about all the political and corporate shenanigans behind it on its path to military use you'd understand why. The 'powers that be' and their corporate masters where never fond of the M14.
For the record of everyone watching, the scenes from 10:09 onward are from a movie called Daylight's End It's an indie vampire/zombie apocalypse movie and it's really well done, I highly recommend it!
0:15 I remember to watch war movies and action packed movies is called full metal jacket, black hawk down and the last stand cause they also had M14 ASSAULT RIFLES it used lot of stuff in movies, television shows and videos games
13:33 Can someone explain to me how the M14 makes that muzzle flash? The M14 flash hider/muzzle break has 4 gas vents or cuts in it like a British L1A1. Meaning if you saw muzzle flash it would appear like 4 streaks of "flame" or flash. Here its 5. You see this in movies too with the M60 which has a similar muzzle break but bigger, often the muzzle flash in movies is what I call the "5 star" effect. You see this in many older movies when they still fired blanks so its not a CGI effect.
Don't be so hasty. Some decently good manufacturers have gotten some nice things to recommend, like ; the Eugene Stoner design for the AR - 10 has several good points in it's favor, larger standard magazine capacity, with a lower weight overall rifle, is a great idea tho, it has similar maintenance" and "care requirements to the M 14, so maybe not to everyone's desire. - the "DMR 762" from Styer offers further updates on the AR - 10 style and form factor, top notch rifle, but you pay the Styer price. - I wish there was enough time to heap the due kudos on what became the L 129 A1, by Lewis Machine and Tool, it is just a very solid and good rifle in most of the standard field work. - The CZ Bren 2 PPS gets a mention because the rifle is so versatile and can be changed to 5.56 mm NATO is just want some "practice" with handling or shooting for yourself. - the age old SVD of the former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact also gets mentioned because of sheer availability and Com Block standard parts and ammunition, the downside is that same bugaboo • it is a "DMR" (at best) masquerading as a "Sniper Rifle". - but... it is being replaced in Russian service by the incremental improvement offered by the SVCh, from Kalashnikov Concern, one good feature is the ability to "up barrel" to the SVCh 8.6 mm ( .338 Lapua Magnum) with a change out of the upper receiver including new bolt and barrel assembly, otherwise not special. - Back on the US side we get to the Mk 20 SSR (the FN SCAR - H tpr) an "accuratized" version of the FN SCAR in use with SOCOM, it also is standard in 7.62 mm NATO, "up barreled" to 6.5 Creedmoor, is "standard" in a lot of ways but stabile and useful. - Brings us to the "CSASS" version of the 7.62 HK 417 battle rifle (the G 28 E 2 & E3 in German service), a fine enough firearm for use as a "Designated Marksman Rifle", a competent enough rifle, loads of interchangeable parts and accessories, good ergonomics, but not a standout as a "sniper rifle" imho, tho Joint SOCOM and multitudes of police departments make good use of it. - Not shading the G 3 by listing it so late, the many dozens of variants take the ol' HK product around the world and back to Germany where "marksman" versions of the G 3 are still in use, if you have a big enough army or enough money for a large large order maybe you too can have your own variant of the perfectly usable G 3 (like Norway's *AG-3 F1* or Sweden's *Ak 4D* ). ... Now if you want to really "reach out and touch someone with a true "modern" sniper rifle step up to dedicated full-time .338 Lapua Magnum ( or .300 Winchester Magnum, for you people that like tight and lean supply lines), the program that started with the Accuracy International "Artic Warfare" (and ARM) rifle, the most ... refined of these rifles are the L115 A4 as used by British forces, the ACMC ("multi caliber") will eventually get into service with NATO countries, modernity is cool ig ¿
The rifle is still in active service in the armed forces of the Philippines as a dmr but still in bone-stock configuration, with or without sniper scopes
Overly heavy, hard to control in rapid fire or full auto, design and operating system dates back to the M - 1 A1. The AR 10 design has proven to be more reliable, lighter, somewhat less expensive... 💵

2:59 tbh, I have never totally understood these scenes in *_Gardens Of Stone_* . The M 14 is a semi or fully automatic rifle, why are the soldiers firing single shots and manually working the ("enhanced" M 1 rifle) action to eject the spent cartridge case and manually cycle the the action? It doesn't make much sense to not just fire the "salute" with the normal semi - automatic action. . .
As someone that's had M1As that was painful to watch -Zero recoil even on full auto -puny suppressor on it like it's for a 22, 30h8 would grenade that after a few shots and too small to supress it -click muzzle flashes 🤦🏻♂️
