Imagine being sent on a generation ship to some Kepler system on a 200 year trip only for Earth to develop a ship that can reach it in 50 years
On the other hand, waiting 50 years for Earth to develop a ship that reaches the destination in 50 years doesn't save you from Earth getting blown up 20 years after you decided to opt out of the 200 years journey.
Arthur C Clark (?) wrote a short story on this theme, Astronauts sleep for 500 years and find Alpha Centauri is already inhabited by 1 billion humans who arrived there 400 years in the past on ships that would go much faster....

No, I would not. There was a time when I would have signed up and raised my hand, and my proof of this is that I signed up and raised my hand to serve on submarines. It was on a submarine when I realized that life in a tube is pretty challenging at best, and the day-to-day life is probably not that different from life in a habitat - artificially managed air, monotonous cuisine, same handful of people every day. We did not have access to news or games more sophisticated that card games, so in that respect submarines are arguably worse. On the other hand we had Earth-normal gravity and the potable water on a nuclear submarine at sea is as good as it gets, unless you like minerals in your water. So on balance I do not regret my decision and am thankful that it taught me this about myself before I found myself looking longingly at some reminder of what I left and wishing I were back on a submarine looking forward to pulling into port where I could get a really disgusting hamburger.
I have long maintained that the place to recruit the next generation of astronauts; the folks who will go on trips to other planets requiring months; is from the submarine service.
Any veteran who served on a nuclear submarine, particularly on a boomer, has proven he's got what it takes to travel the solar system.
You submariners are next level, massive respect mate! As for me I have spent a large chunk of my life working gas and oil and mining camps in some of the most isolated places on earth. (Australia and Indian Ocean) eating a bland diet of mush day in and out with limited contact with the rest of the world except for the guys you live with in a camp often for weeks if not months at a time is not for everyone, but also made some life long friends that I literally trust with my life (as I’m certain you guys have too) there’s also this kind of dark and sardonic humour you tend to develop with people in shared situations like this that actually works pretty well as a coping mechanism. While I admire the spirit of adventure that companies like SpaceX are pushing I’ve yet to be convinced that spending 9 months in Zero-G then landing on a planet with no medical team waiting to see how much bone density and coordination you’ve lost is the way to go, I think as a bare minimum there should be some sort of Coriolis type G and really, really good radiation shielding before any manned interplanetary missions are given the green light...

I would never discourage anyone from embarking on an adventure, but would advise some commonsense precautions to make it as safe as possible. Having had my adventure, I feel that I have nothing left to prove and will leave it to the young while they still think they're immortal.

I actually find these days that many of them are far less prepared to roll the dice in the risk department than previous generations. Probably because they seem to actually be turning out quite sensible, by and large. As for me, I’m 52 and I’m applying to get stationed in Antarctica in 3 days time. Fingers crossed. It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do. May take a little explaining to my significantly younger and far more sensible girlfriend...
I think whoever you get has to have proven themselves in that sort of environment and also be wired differently to most people. You're gonna have to look for the Evel Knievels, Alex Honnolds and Felix Baumgartners of the world. People that just have no fear and are a bit fucked in the head. The right stuff.
In regards to robots doing labour, I think 40K nailed this in that Robots would do the initial setting up of the colony so that colonists could move in to a colony with fully developed infrastructure such homes, roads, essential buildings etc. I don't think we're ever going to see people sat around playing dice all day while the robots do all the work.
It has just occurred to me that future colonists could earn extra cash from an (almost) livestreamed Mars vlog. Could the colonization of the solar system be financed in part by Raycon and Raid: Shadow Legends?
This is the kind of meta-thinking we really need. Seriously, space tourism and entertainment will be real markets. Influencers who blaze ahead to start livestreaming their off-world adventures will have a huge following, and will further attract people to space and space entertainment. That's more potential customers, and more potential revenue by being a sponsor. Not to mention the overhead costs to establish a trade network in space - if you can not only set up a great sponsorship with a prominent influencer/vlogger (which by then may be short for virtual, rather than video), and also have the physical infrastructure to distribute your goods/services spacewide, you will be lightyears ahead of the market. So if there are sponsors, the most successful ones will probably turn out to be involved in media, e-commerce, logistics, foodstuffs, and niche luxury items (due to the concept of whales)

My guess is that for a very long time there would be no barrier or patrol preventing people from colonizing a planet without explicit permission from the colonists and gov/industry sponsors. They would need permission to cross the airspace and claimed territory but could probably settle for some time on any designated area they wish.
I'll be honest, your brief description of life as a Martian colonist was mighty tempting.
Not for me unless I have at least a 30 acre doom or complexes for my own the size of my Farm.. I do want to have chickens, hogs, goats, rabbits, fish to eat, Not a Vegan, I will be Ok with it then just get out once a week anyway, have a few robots and machines to do most of my work for me

? Star Trek colonists are clearly explored in DS9. They are basically self governing communes devoted to something - like being hippies - but the star trek equivalent - so they might build robots by hand or make wine the old fashioned way. Some colonies are resort planets or try to be like earth. None of them are “red shirted” the worst fate for them is when some fringe groups like space amish set up on the boarder too close to the cardasians and end up in the “neutral zone” paying taxes or being relocated. Which is a total dick move that makes little sense - but wtv, star trek be that way some times.

@@VeryProPlayerYesSir1122 I'm American and this only from my perspective. In America it's fairly easy to have a middle class lifestyle. Or used to be. For me it still is. Find a job paying 60-70k a year by doing what no one else wants to do. Unpalatable work is still available. Work the job consistently. Don't spend all your income. Invest here and there. Really nothing of a challenge. I like life to be a bit more difficult. I thrive on overcoming.

Given the way politics has gone in the world these days, I can easily see people moving to a colony for political reasons, to live under a system they agree with.

I can easily see Earth limiting genetic engineering, and colonists rushing off to found their own genetically engineered paradise. However, I can also see Earth failing to creat any consistent limitations on the expansion of genotech, and rushing off to found their own lifeboat society, where natural biology can continue without the risks of uncontrolled genetic engineering.
Is it odd that I can see both happening, and neither seems more likely?
I think there was indeed a story about a genetically modified society that moved into an orbital habitat so they could practice their modifications without government interference
I can definitely see such things happening; in some of the less “ethical” space societies we could see some colonies engineering different variants of humanity to survive in wildly different conditions from earth, say to cope with higher radiation, or we could see lines of engineered people with vastly shorter life expectancies and maturation cycles so aesthetic traits could be selected for, then the artificial ageing factors being removed when the engineered line is “completed” and the desired aesthetic genomes have been documented

China and Russia have been working on making “superhumans” for all sorts of purposes, like Yao Ming the basketball legend, who’s parents supposedly didn’t know each other until they were told to make a child by the Government (whether that’s true or not is hard to verify, even if it does sound insane).
Nevertheless; even if there aren’t any programmes like the spartan one yet, there likely will in the near future

At least initially, your trip to the “paradise” world would be a leap of faith, as there would be little or no returning colonists to say it’s actually a “trash” world!

That reminds me of a chapter in a novel by Chris Wraight called "Lords of Silence" whee they detail how the imperium lures colonists to AgriWorlds with images of idyllic farm life when they're actually mono-crop mega chemical sprayed near death worlds :)
That might not be the case on the ship I imagined. The first colonists who are awoken from hibernation [or birthed ] would gain the rights to the colony territory, the controlling rights of the ship and equipment as well as mission procedural rights including the ability to send back the ship with the hibernating colonists [and or embryos] back to Earth. They could also vote not to even explore and move on to a different moon or travel to another system in a generational fashion or hibernate if the technology exists.

I have on occasion asked my college science classes who would be up for going to Mars as a colonist. Usually out of a class of say 20 or so, I get 2 to 4 who raise their hands. That’s probably about right as the vast majority of people will be happy to stay put, but I figure there will still be enough to spread out into the solar system.
I suspect it would be easier to colonize a remote part of the Gobi desert or an Antartican peninsula than to colonize any nearby planet within 20 light years of us. It will take a dedicated economic effort, technological achievement and ideological motive perhaps based on religion or creed to successfully obtain the chance to colonize a new world outside of our solar system. I believe the myriad of colonies will be valuable to everyone on Earth and the Solar System settlements despite the decade long lags in communication. We may be able to seed colonies across the Galaxy itself and come closer to guaranteeing a conscious presence in this amazing Universe.

In Kim Stanley Robinson´s novel Aurora, people went straight to landing on one of the two planets of interest rather than spending a generation or two developing the new solar system, building space infrastructure, and studying the planets that might be settled in the future. Instead, people developed a deadly disease of unknown origin. As a consequence, the expedition split in two and one half returned to Earth. To a layman, there is not much sense to arrive and land immediately.
Agreed feet on solid ground would be on everybodies mind as soon as the ship arrived.
I'd probably aim to be a volunteer for a digitized/brain-in-a-jar Von Nuemann probe. I really enjoyed the politic-free tycoon style of building, expanding, and exploring other systems seen in the bobiverse series. I'd love to be able to experience, experiment with, and build so many things with hundreds of years ahead of me and would enjoy that so much more than the solar panel vendor in the video. At some point in the future, even if nothing comes of it, I don't think it would be a waste to freeze after death and be able to experience things in the future.
Wish we could go ahead and solve biological aging so generation ships wouldn’t be such a pain.

This is the premise to Altered Carbon.
I've already upsticked and moved across the world twice, and I've dealt with the challenges pretty well. So if I could choose to move to another planet that was already reasonably well developed, I'd be in. But to be an alien homesteader... probably not. I'd need the infrastructure set up already for me to slot into.

Hey Isaac you should do a video on the Future Of Personal Transportation, covering the potential choices people will make in regards to getting around, both in metropolitan and rural contexts. I was watching things on electric skateboards and wheel-shoes and the degree to which they're becoming sophisticated made me consider that maybe it might be a choice people make in the future to maintain regular walking areas, but people use wheels in their shoes to cover large distances inside buildings quickly. The amount of materials required to make a form of electrically-powered transportation for one person can be made very small in this framework.
I gotta say of all of Issac Arthur's videos I find this one the most inspiring to my ability to visualize the future. I;ve already listened to it several times in a row and plan to do so again. This one's great!

I don't think it would work. :D Better to have a robot dog in that case.
We have augmented-reality goggles for humans. Perhaps at that point we'll have olfactory-sense augmented reality muzzles connected to something that's essentially a combination of LIDAR and laser spectrometers. Humans would just see a color-coded map, being visually oriented, while dogs would have a brain built (naturally and genetically-engineered) to make sense of a scent landscape.

Given the opportunity i would be on the first ship off this rock. Ever since i can remember ive wanted to be a planet breaker. Planet breakers are the people who firgure out how to live on alien worlds, using in situ resources. More pioneer than colonist. I would not want to settle down but instead keep moving out. Me, a ship, and a star to steer her by.
In a nutshell:
"Something just broke and we can't find replacements in time. Prepare to die everybody it was nice while it lasted!"
But the free market will find a replacement, if you believe in it hard enough.
This is my biggest fear about future space exploration. Companies cutting corners to get more money thus messing all up.
There should be strict control from forces both from inside and out.
I also think we will be stuck for a long time close to Earth since most of the rockets today are used for things and missions close to Earth. There are no reasons to expand further since there is no gain to be made for the foreseeable future.
@@fanuluiciorannr1xd212 I would say it is improbable that there will be a lot of instances of companies deciding to pay to little and letting all things explode. Basically everything you do with spaceships it's equivalent to having nuclear bombs at your side. And every failure is a loss of multiple hundreds of millions or billions. It's like saying that companies with nuclear submarines near giant cities would decide that security measures are a too heavy price to pay
Pretty dumb. If it is required for survival. There will be a ton of backups.
@@joapercan6887 For real, I think too much sci fi is made by artists that don't understand economics. I love the dirty Sci fi of Aliens and Star Wars, but in our world, peasants would not be let anywhere near colonies. It would be a huge investment, and treated as such.
Plus, we are assuming robots constructing materials on site. You are not gonna waste the fuel to transport everything needed. They are going to send the bare minimum needed, and construct anything you need in a 3D printer. At that point, you are basically self-sufficient.

The only things I things I think Mr. Arthur under appreciates are the humanities as in the arts. In the far future when much of what is needed for survival is automated I think artists will be even more in demand than they are now and likely will be among some of the richest most influential people.

Even today those in the entertainment business make more money and enjoy more fame than those who run our governments and those who provide for essential services. So yes I can see the lines between a tech company and a government being blurred as humanity takes to the heavens. But I imagine that if there are people who have to spend their entire lives either in underground cave complexes or in spinning cans floating in space, the ones who can take those peoples minds to places with wide open spaces, blue skies and an abundance of flora and fauna - will be in VERY high demand.

Books and magazines are among the most valued commodities in prisons where people's minds crave escape. I see no reason why this would be any different in the far future.

In "Neuromancer" a classic sci fi book, he depicts the Rastafarians being some of the first groups to go into space. its very interesting. imagine that!
I would consider it depending on the end destination and who my neighbors were.
I like this analysis. Without a reliable source of continuous investment, personally based motivations may be crucial to extra-solar exploration and settlement. I never considered that religious and ideological groups might provide the most feasible opportunities to colonize systems within 1000 light years of Earth. The ground state seems like a vitally important part of a colonies success. If it is possible to easily "terraform" the landscape within or outside a dome to safely grow food, raise animals and mine the minerals and elements necessary for surviving and prospering then the venture can be viable enough to sustain investment and human presence. The viking in me gets bored if I stay in one place to long . Some time back I had a dream I was a spaceship technician . Someone in the dream asked me if I ever get bored working on the same ship year after year , and I said no I never work in the same place twice .
you should do a video on harry turtledove style aliens where the aliens progress much slower than humans as a species, sent out a probe and expected humans to progress at a same speed as them. after a long voyage they come to earth during WW2 and are shocked as they find tech that is only a century or two below their own when they were expecting medieval crusaders.
I am too old to consider seriously being a colonist. If I was 40 years younger, in my 20s, or even 30s or maybe 40s I would surely sign up to go. After all you only live once, make the most of it.

I have my doubts that anyone would pay taxes in a new colony at least not in cash. Everything you do is getting recycled back into the colony to make it bigger and better. The products and materials you make/mine are basically the taxes you pay to be in the colony in the first place.
@@thebman80 the guvernment of Mars(or of the region that it controlled) will need to rise taxes from some products coming from outside to finance its operations, but if the taxes are to high smuggling become too appealing for consumers and traders, it's doesn't matter if the currency is a virtual one or another types, what matters is how much more you need to pay and what will be your benefit from that taxes.

Amazing episode Isaac and crew! Really great new artwork too. On this Thanksgiving Day, I'm personally thankful to Issac (and crew) for these amazing videos. I've been fascinated with space colonies since I was a kid in Junior High and read a book on O'Neill Cylinders (I'm age 42 now). I ended up checking out that book about 15 times from the Library over the next 2-3 years because I was so fascinated with the concept and what life would be like on one of those colonies. These episodes not only give me (and a lot of others) hope for the future, but a beautiful mindscape in which to play in as we envision what the future holds for ourselves and our children. Thank you for all your effort and hard work. It's very, very much appreciated.

i would like to be involved in the space industry, sounds exciting and its something that i feel would be a great way to experience something new, as long as its been tested and their is a way to survive and live some what normally i would not mind. i may even enjoy it
Assuming SpaceX pulls through and we start sending manned ships to Mars in the next 5-10 years, I'll be in my early-mid 30s and would be *more* than happy to join up - even assuming it's a one way trip at least for the first few decades of the colony.
This is, of course, also dependent on what my family situation is at that point. But as of right now I have few things keeping me bound to Earth.
Throwing in some ideas: I propose that it work like thisL As a colonist you get claim to 2 metric tons of resources from the planet. That could be in the form of mined regolith, refined materials, bio-resources, compressed gases, water, whatever. You could 'spread' it out and convert it into square footage for habitation, or cultural uses. There would also be an evergy converstion so X amount of mass = X aount of kW generated or some such. You could keep these resources on planet, or ship them off, up to you, you would just have to follow a strict leave no trace policy either way.

My twenty-year-old self longed to go into space or somehow be involved in space exploration. Instead, I went to work on the fishing boats of the Bering Sea. Today, in my mid-forties, I'm much more settled, happy, and "tame". Yet, I still have a bit of that restless twenty-something inside me. If aging-reversal tech were a thing, I'd look to get involved with NASA or SpaceX. In summary, medical advances, such as anti-aging, anti-cancer, gene-therapy, etc., could be what makes space colonization available to a large swathe of humanity. Around 4 minutes you speculate there may exist self replicating robots by this time. But if there exist self replicating robots, and strong AI (or if the robots are capable of descent with modification) then you don't need humans anymore. The object of ensuring that intelligent life survives indefinitely beyond Earth has already been attained.

I think about these ideas literally all the time, it's fun for me to imagine. It's all essentially some form of information, in which existing in certain states of environmental conditions, or as energy signiture's.
I seen in nature a lot of similar things, like up above and so below. Most things need balance and a flow of moving energy states. Like the cells and planet's and galaxies. Also like torus Field's, or like alternating currents, or like x points, or like the laws of thermodynamics, or the coriolis effect, or probability wave forms.
The keys to the universe, or a physics engine, or a matrix processing device. Physics would be neat to understand further. Basically either through pattern's and like algorithms and of language of sorts, or yea a energy signiture.
One could theoretically exceed speed of light, by changing the internal relationship to the outer exterior space of the universe. Their is essentially nothing really stopping the circumference their of, in which space time from changing.
As such physics would also not be locked and could change, they could create artificial controlled environments, in which adjusting physics, or the underlying code of the universe, as they see fit. ((( The circumference their of, could theoretically be anything.))) (())
