The song, 'You'll See' was recorded and released on Shirley's 1996 CD titled, 'The Show Must Go On.' Shirley delivers a powerful rendition, and as always, places her own unique stamp on every songs she performs.
    ABOUT This Song:
You'll See" is a song by American singer Madonna from her ballads compilation, Something to Remember (1995). The album was released with the intention of toning down the image of Madonna, who was being heavily criticized at the time. She wrote and produced the song with Canadian musician David Foster. "You'll See" was released on October 30, 1995, by Maverick Records as the lead single from the album. An acoustic pop ballad, "You'll See" features instrumentation from percussion, tremolo guitar and piano, while lyrically it speaks of independence after the end of a love affair. The song received positive reception from contemporary critics, with reviewers praising Madonna's vocals. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) honored it as the Most Performed Song, in their annual ASCAP Pop Awards for 1997. "You'll See" was commercially successful, reaching the top five in Austria, Canada, Finland, Italy and the United Kingdom. The single also managed to peak at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 making it Madonna's 29th top-ten single on the chart.
    LYRICS:
You think that I can't live without your love
    You'll see,
You think I can't go on another day.
    You think I have nothing
    Without you by my side,
    You'll see
    Somehow, some way
You think that I can never laugh again
    You'll see,
You think that you destroyed my faith in love.
You think after all you've done
I'll never find my way back home,
    You'll see
    Somehow, someday
    All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
    I know I'll survive
    I know I'll stay alive,
    All on my own
I don't need anyone this time
    It will be mine
No one can take it from me
    You'll see
You think that you are strong, but you are weak
    You'll see,
It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat.
I have truth on my side,
    You only have deceit
    You'll see, somehow, someday
    All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
    I know I'll survive
    I know I'll stay alive,
    I'll stand on my own
I won't need anyone this time
    It will be mine
No one can take it from me
    You'll see
    Somehow
    Someday
    You'll See!

Obviously, Madonna wrote this song with another co-writer, and it was a hit for her. But, what Dame Shirley Bassey does that only top-tier vocalists can do is that she has the ability to change up the melody, and with her strong voice can make the arrangement unique to her. She can basically sing the phone book. Shirley does not write songs, and actually can't read music, but with her natural talent she has made a very lucrative career for herself by singing the songs that others have written. And, many of these songs over the years became hits for her.

What an incredible compliment to Madonna for both Shirley and Susan covering her song. Sometimes you just cannot match the authenticity and emotion of the original songwriter, regardless of technical prowess.

Of course all Shirley Bassey fans would respectfully disagree with your assessment. I prefer this arrangement over Madonna's. Madonna was a co-writer on this song, and it was certainly different than the other bubble gum songs she has written. Many people tend to compare Shirley's LIVE performance of a song with the studio recording of their favorite. That's OK, but it must be pointed out. I will say that Shirley has performed other versions of this song live on video, and I have them uploaded.

@@sas9023055 You really don't know anything about Madonna and how she writes. You use the term "co-writer" in a pejorative way to dismiss her contribution as negligible. Madonna wrote the lyrics and melody to this as is the case with most of her other songs. David Foster did the arrangement and produced it (along with Madonna). It's not about who's a "better" singer or whose fans will agree or disagree. All of Bassey's arrangements sound the same and there's certainly nothing original about this arrangement as it's done in the style and key of Goldfinger, Diamonds, and every other Bassey song, which she didn't write.

    • @AppleCinnamon1
      @AppleCinnamon1 5 місяців тому

@@sas9023055you compare apples with oranges. Madonna, Dame Bassey and Susan have totally different back grounds. Madonna doesn't have to do Dame Bassey, she doesn't have to have an operatic voice or choir training, because her voice is beautiful the way it is. The way it has been from the outset. She has a sweet, raspy, deep, sexy, feminine, storytelling, celebratory, girlish and campy voice. We love her voice and records exactly because of all its unique candy 🍬 attributes. Sad to see that you misjudge something without knowing all its unique ingredients and without having the taste for it.
I am a proud fan of both Madonna and Dame Bassy. Love Susan's version too. People don't have to sing in the same way to be great at what what they do.
      Your judgment sucks.

    • @AppleCinnamon1
      @AppleCinnamon1 5 місяців тому

@@deantailor357 No disrespect to Dame Bassey, but I wouldn't change Madonna's very unique storytelling versitle performance artist voice for any other. You obviously don't know anything about Madonna and her great body of work.
I can't imagine anyone in the world singing everybody, holliday, like a Virgin, Crazy for You, Papa don't preach, Nothing Really Matters, inside of me, Frozen, the Power of Goodby, 4 Minutes, to Have and not to hold,,,,,
Because nobody has the same sociological backgroud, music sociology and music philosophy development, versatility and psychological diversity that Madonna has. Madonna defined the postmodernism in art. It is in the ingredients and the blend, not in the operatic or choir lessons. Madonna wrote and sang some of her greatest records long before she even had a singing lesson. She preformed and is still performing her songs mostly live where it matters, before full arenas and stadiums, not just on stage with selected studio audience or her converts alone.

Madonna co-wrote this song, and it was a single for her. For Shirley, this was a track/song on one of her albums. But, live, there is no question that Shirley Bassey's version is much, much better. But, this is the case with most of the songs she performs live. It's about the VOICE..

She appeared at many venue's during 1997, and a live album was done for her 60th birthday, but was only recorded at one of those venues (Althorp Park). Shirley was up for a Grammy for this album, but lost out to a veteran singer from the USA, Patti Paige

Its clear that Shirley has a great voice., but the emotional side of this song was not there. Madonna will admit herself that she's not the best singer but she's brilliant at story telling, producing etc. Its one of my favorite songs period. So many of her songs/videos are still relevant/stylish today 30 years later. How many artists can you say that about?

Agree that Shirley has a great voice, but agree to disagree about the rest of your comment. In my opinion, Shirley's rendition of this song far outshines Madonna's original recording and any live performance. Madonna has such a weak voice that she sings the song the way she does because she has not option to sing it any other way.

A great song is a great song and can be arranged, produced, and performed in any style. Madonna has re-imagined many of her own songs and well as songs brought to her by others. That's true artistry. Singing every song in the same style is easy. Who goes from Material Girl to Live to Tell to Like A Prayer to Secret to You'll See to Ray of Light to Don't Tell Me to Dark Ballet? I prefer one of Dolly Parton's incarnations of I Will Always Love You (always have, way before Whitney's was even a concept) to Whitney Houston's. And speaking of Don't Tell Me, go listen to Joe Henry's "Stop" and see what Madonna did with it.

much love to Boyle and bassey, but this goes to show you how vocal range isn't the only thing to make a song great, Madonna possesses such rich tone that these 2 or even the likes or Mariah would kill for (mariah sounds the same in every track there's no emotion)

And Madonna doesn't? Madonna's voice is thin and rather dull. It's not her vocals that made her famous that's for sure. Madonna makes good music and always knows how to distract her audience from the fact that her vocals aren't her strong suit.
