Rita, Sue and Bob Too, written by the gifted but troubled local playwright Andrea Dunbar, is a no-holds-barred comedy-drama about two 15-year-old girls directed by Alan Clarke and was filmed here. If you have yet to see this 1987 hard-hitting comedy-drama, I highly recommend it. Excellent photography that perfectly captures the depressing and hopeless atmosphere.
best photograph at 0:17...well framed, candid, great use of black and white format "with red"... shows the grit, grime, and dogged determination to carry on in the face of hard times. best post of buttershaw on youtube... keep posting...it will all be gone before long and photos like these will be all thats left to show what made us the people we are...10/10
I finished school in 2007 I am from Canterbury but I used to slam up on the estate seeing these put me right back to those days stood shivering outside toppys shop 🙈 should of just gone to class!
Thanks for showing me what a dump I used to live in, It was great when I was there as you never really notice it. The chippy has gone. The ally way on the left used to be the post office, Hillards has gone...lol. Great pictures though. Thanks
Enjoyed your video James. I used to be a postie on the estate for many years in the 90s, the Arbour, Bransdale Clough, Barden Avenue, Reevy Road West, the shops it brings it all back. One thing it got me over my fear of dogs. I've subscribed as I'm looking forward to watching some of your Leeds videos as well. Have a look at my channel which has some Bradford videos all around history, walks and travel.
@@michaelwittmann2644 The Beacon pub was demolished a few years ago. The flats are all gone. Demolished many, many years ago. The streets in the area are still the same with the addition of some new builds. Bob's house still exists but that's not in Buttershaw. I suggest you check out Reevy Road West on Google Street View and go from there.
@@DodgersTrips Greetings, Dodgers Trips. Thank you for your reply. I half didn't expect a quick answer, as your comment was made four years ago. As I mentioned to Gavhinds, for my selfish reasons, I would have liked to photograph the iconic buildings and feel what I saw in the movie. It is good that the area has been invested in. The locals must be very pleased.
There needs to be a new video of this to show what's now gone..and what's in its place...the old beacon pub has sadly now gone..and it's place stands a waste ground of rubbish....I would have loved to have had a beer in there back in the 80s..
@@michaelwittmann2644 well m8 where the beacon pub once stood where sues dad staggers out of its gone now all demolished and in its place when I went was a waste ground of rubbish...the area is certainly cleaner than it used to be but still rough as hell. ..Rita's house has gone and the flats where sue lived is now a green...
@@gavhinds8190 Hello, gavhinds. Thank you very much for responding. I didn't expect a reply so quickly, or one at all, but I decided to try anyway. For my own selfish reasons, it's a shame that those landmarks you mentioned are now gone. I would have liked to photograph them and experience what I saw in the movie. The locals must be delighted that the investment has improved their neighbourhood. Thanks again, dude👍😎.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too were filmed there. Are the same buildings depicted in the film still standing?

@@michaelwittmann2644 You could always consider then and now comparisons using stills from the movie.
@@DodgersTrips Yes, I did think of that, though I'll still visit Buttershaw with my camera.

Quote from the effort to change this area: "What's the point of double gazing and central heating if they have no jobs..." Very true as it turned out.
Me and a few of my family were up here the other week..so much has changed..
For the better or worse?
