How to develop your own metal tone:
    1. Grab a ten-sided die from a Dungeons and Dragons game.
    2. Roll die, whatever number comes up, set knob to that number.
    3. Repeat until all knobs are set.

  • @GogiRegion
    @GogiRegion 6 років тому +192

*The best way:* Mess with the knobs.
*The way to actually get stuff done:* Try not to just mess with knobs all day.

@@theders8590 which is weird that the V30 is the "go to" these days, they sound pretty scooped to me. for tight low and mid range attack that'll part thighs and blow your house in; celestion g12t-75s or carvin gs12-75s.

AskAboutMyZombiePlan Well V30s are fuzzy so I think they use that to cut through the mix. That may be the main reason they sound heavy.

In my recording class, we were told to always use more than just one type of microphone when recording anything. The one microphone we always use as a starting point for recording is the SM57. I remember the SM57 sounding pretty damn sick when we recorded electric guitar. But I wanted to see what it would sound like if you placed the microphone behind the amp, and it sounded pretty cool. I agree with you on the whole "don't be afraid to experiment with the equipment" statement.

Paradise Lost for their most recent album Medusa used a Sunn Model T blended with an old block 5150 and if you listen to a song like "Blood & Chaos" or "From The Gallows" the tone is massive and refreshing to listen to while everyone (musician and gear companies) are saturating the whole djent/prof Metal sound.

there are extreme sounds like back in the day the swedish metal sound with the boss hm2 ... or think of doom metal ... i think there is much potential ... with the new plasma pedal that has a new way of distorting the tone... also the band Royal Blood is very innovative with their way of sound ... or kyuss when they used bass amps for guitar ... i think i got something new also in my band "Mudgod" but judge it for yourself... Metal can be a lot more interesting when people are more creative with their sounds ... as a sidenote: DAMN that drumsound was amazing!! Well done Glenn

Awesome Vid! Thanks so much for posting this. the world needs more of these types of videos. i'm so tired of dealing with people that think there's only one way to do everything.
One thing i found imperative (for myself and sounding different) is to get away from only using dynamic mics, which tend to give a similar sound no matter which you use. i double mic everything, and generally use condenser mics that don't cut out so much of the sound like a dynamic. once you get into condensers you can have fun matching small diaphragms with large diaphragms, as well as changing up capsules in large diaphragms. then of course there's Fredman, Sneap, and just old fashion using different mics. One amp, different cabs and mics is way more versatile than two amps through one cab and one type of mic! this is important for people to understand.
thank you so much for saying that a Mesa cab has a very particular tone, and is one of the most different sounding cabs on the market. they are great, but unique sounding... until everyone is using one! To my surprise, my Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 is more appropriate for most of my amps than my mesa 4x12. (Tighter Sound at low recording volumes). ALWAYS TEST RECORD YOUR GEAR! (to see what combinations sound best). listening to the amp in the room while you play is NOT the same as recording it, then listening to the recording. seriously - you'll be surprised if you do this every time. 95% of the time, it works every time. ;)
Love Corrosion of Conformity! Masters of that dirty fizzy heaviness! amazing heaviness out of those guys. why is it the southern bands have the best tone?

Last record with my band we recorded live. I've a customized Sound City PA 200 PLUS amp and a Finnish Monster 4x12 cab with 2 Celestion and 2 Eminence speakers. We put a Stephenson e22s on a celestion and a vintage AKG D12E on an eminence! We also had a room mic, not sure but I think a Coles 4038. I also play a 335 clone thru a custom H90 pickup on the neck. Result is a tone thats both sort of hollow yet present at the same time. Love it!

  • @DirtyAncom

I think the best way to find your own tone is to go down the less traveled paths. Search for unknown/lesser known brands of amps, pedals and guitars, take a look at your local music shop. Or also, try to get an unmetal amp to sound metal, that'll be way more interesting than sticking emgs into a tubescreamer into a 5150 into mesa v30s. And along the way, you might actually find yourself liking some tones you wouldn't have thought of.
Personnally, I got my absolute all time favorite tone by plugging a p90 equipped Maybach into a Big Muff PI, and sending all that to the clean channel of a Marshall silver jubilee combo. I know, not the tightest of tones, but it was the most fun I ever had with guitar gear

Awesome vid, and I really dig that DTP 440 DM. What I've learned is that the tried and true 5150 style amp with mesa cab and SM57 tone really starts to sound stale if you find yourself working with it all the time. Right now I really dig Celestion Elite 80 speakers and a tubed head loaded with 12AU7s. The masters of tone in my view blend cabs though, most of the time some kind of budget Peavey cab (XXX or JSX) with a rectifier cab and some kind of tweed cab- they get all three of them in phase and tweak to taste with a different track for each one. Sounds massive with a generic Warwick bass guitar track running DI through a SansAmp.

My first album I went all out standard amp sim 5150/dual recto through recto cabs with the sm57. This time around I totally dropped the dual recto, kept the 5150 (swapped tubes) and added a 'vintage' mic, and swapped some speakers. The other is an engl Powerball totally normal with a 57 and a vintage mic blended. They sound awesome on their own and together.

Many people overlook the tones of the Peavey JSX amp, you can get some crushing tones out of that amp and the clean channel is stellar. Also in my opinion the new EVH amps have a mid range bite that I like over the 5150 or 6505. Also recorded at Tracks East with Eric Rachel and he had a Bogner Ubershall ......also sick!

I Also can get some great metal tones out of a Fender cranked, boosted, and gated. Although this has been said over and over, change your pickups to something more chill. Hotter pickups tend to muddy. Great video you salty Canuk.

Great message here. I do not think enough people experiment with recording (myself included). Just as I think too many people get it in their head that you need the most high end gear to make great recordings. I think the most tiring idea is that Vintage 30s are the be all end all for great speakers. Thanks for addressing that a little.

One of the things I like to do is use a particular cab for one guitar, and use a different cab for the other, and hard pan those guitars.
If you’re strictly recording, you can toy around with this using cab sims too. That gives you a nice full sound.

Hey Glenn... You have some awesome vids on getting an amazing Metal guitar tone from amps, mics, plugins, tips/tricks, etc.
Though, I'd love to see a video (if you don't already have one), about what to look for in a great Metal guitar to achieve not only an awesome tone through an amp (or sim) - but in a mix. But, not including pickups (since that can be replaced). Basically everything before the guitar cord or even strings - plenty of vid on those too ;)
Is there a wood type, neck through body, locking tuners, weight, length of neck, tremolo (ex. Floyd Rose), body shape (ex. Destroyer vs Strat, etc) that is a dream combination to get that tone? Is there any model you'd recommend that has all these dream variables that don't cost thousands of dollars? I know there's a lot based on personal taste - but I trust your opinion and want your view on the best combination scenario for recording a killer metal sound - like the one in your opening credits.
    Thanks, man!

I'm getting really good results from micing a single 1x12 cab open back. One mic on the front and another on reverse. Move around till phase cancels then flip. I find I can achieve a tone that has a lot of clarity with less yuck and muddy low end.

Getting your own unique guitar tone is definitely a huge task in today's music、much greater than just trying to just "sound good" in my opinion。Guitar tones these days are so similar that it gets boring to listen to some of the new bands out there。
I would definitely go further than amps、cabs、and mics to develop a tone as described in this videoーadding different guitar pedals with different distortion/fuzz/overdrive/etc in your signal chain can really make a world difference on the guitar's timbre【Don't be scared to try weird unknown pedals either】。Reverb in post can also completely shift the atmosphere of your guitar tone、so many tones these days just feel dead in your faceーbut reverb adds so many dimensions especially when automated throughout a mix。So many things can set your tone apart from other metal artists、It all comes down to how much time you're willing to spend。
    I apologize for my little rant、great video as always! \m/ >_< \m/

sounds crazy but my favorite tone right now is a big muff into a 1 watt blackstar pushed by a tubescreamer. it'll need a noisegate if you have really hot pickups but it has a really nice texture and responsiveness once you tweak everything just right.

Love your videos. Thanks for making them. One of the most difficult things I've faced mixing in the home studio is blending a guitar solo. Have you covered this in any of your past videos?

Something I love doing with down-tuned heavy guitar is a pretty standard dual tracked left/right, and then throwing a third take going through a cranked pignose right down the middle. With an 8 string I'd definitely want to eq the low-end out so as to not blow the tiny speaker though.

As a Stoner and Doom metal fan, i totally agree with that. I've always been wondering why all the modern metal guitar players had the same boring sound while Stoner and Doom guitar players had their own sound and the answer is : the FUZZ ! Most modern metal guitar players are using overdrive but overdrives from pedals or amps are pretty blank. Fuzz pedals just take your signal and beat the shit out of it to make it sound awesome, there are as many fuzz pedals as there are sounds ! No need to change the cab or the mics you're using, just put a fucking fuzz before that and voilà. I think most modern metal guitar players are missing that point, or they just don't give a shit i don't know...
