  • Did you know this was the first symphony by a Black woman to be performed by a major American orchestra?
In 1933, Florence Price made history with her groundbreaking Symphony in E minor. Here, it is performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Jamie Phillips, at Classic FM Live - a Hall of Fame special held at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday 16 October.

Did you know she graduated high school at 14? And she played her first piano recital at 4!

Ms Price is one of two really fine black symphonic composers who originated in Little Rock Arkansas. The is William Grant Still. I have played this symphony and all the symphonies of William Grant Still in various Arkansas orchestras. They are beautifully lyrical works, all of them.

I wouldn't call it "groundbreaking", but it's certainly fun.

.. that's your opinion. (Always one rotten apple in the bunch)

@@Semifinished what exactly is "groundbreaking" about it?

If something is groundbreaking, it is very new and a big change from other things of its type

@@Semifinished well, I am very into music history so I do know a handful: Chevalier, Coleridge Taylor, Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, William Dawson(?), R. Nathaniel Dett, Florence (ofc), George Walker, Eleanor Alberga, Erollyn Wallen, umm....those are the only composers i can think of rn, but either way, your take on "groundbreaking" here is more of a social/political consideration than a musical one, imo..
