Important Note: When this video was blocked I was curious and decided to see if I was correct about what the issue was... Well, it seems I was correct, and I think I'll leave this up as it is. Be aware that the portion with a certain Mr. S is muted. I'm sure you don't want to hear the song anyway, right? Right...
All-Star Bond Rally was a short subject produced by 20th Century-Fox and released in 1945. Its purpose, as you could probably guess without my help, was to sell war bonds. Our story, such as it is, follows radio's Fibber McGee and Molly as they attend the all-star bond rally of the title. The show is MCed by Bob Hope, who of course tells some jokes while introducing the various acts. First up is Betty Grable, who sings and dances to "I'll Be Marching to a Love Song." Next, Frank Sinatra is reunited with Harry James and his orchestra to perform "Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week)." Then, Harpo Marx runs in chasing a girl and honking his horn, but he soon sits down to play a serious number on the harp. For something a little bit different, the next segment is devoted to pin-up girls. A number of servicemen are looking at pictures and dreaming when the pictures come to life and talk back to them. The stars featured in this sketch include Linda Darnell, Faye Marlowe, Jeanne Crain, June Haver, Vivian Blaine, and Carmen Miranda. Finally, Bing Crosby shows up and goes for the subtle approach, singing a song called "Buy, Buy Bonds." The music and fun is interrupted at a couple of points when Hope and Crosby hit us with solemn speeches. Buy, buy bonds, folks!
Please,please keep posting these gems of Hollywood.
This must be early in the war - what a frightening time. Thanks for this upload - as is.
Thanks for posting
Why is Sinatra's portion silent?
@jaymusic143 Cuz that's how I got the video past the copyright detection system. Watch it at the dailymotion link instead.
I have seen Bing's portion of this many times, on many generations removed from the Original, and this is by far superior in quality Nicole----however, his portion of "Buy, Buy, Buy a Bond," has been sliced and diced, because on the original, he used an ethnic stereotype or 2 on a portion of his song referring to the Japanese. On the other versions, I can see his mouth and where that part has been excised out---do you perchance know how to find that version?
No splice here. No slur.
I understand totally. Thanks!
@jaymusic143 No problem!
That's why they called him Harpo?
@Bert2368 Something like that.
