On Friday 9th February at 17:30 local time, Rosemary Satchwell, Alison Smithurst, Helene Monpetit and Julie Brady, onboard their boat “Black Squid” crossed the finish line of the World’s Toughest Row in a time of 58 days, 12 hours and 30 minutes. Arriving as this years 28th boat and setting a new World Record for the oldest female team of four to row any ocean! Taking it from ‘Yorkshire Rows’ (Four mums in a boat!) who had a combined age of 188 years and 342 days at the start in the 2015 Atlantic race. Our four Jersey women set the new World Record with an average age of 58 years! Adding more than 43 years to the record. Now you might know why their team name was Intrepid 232!
The four women started the journey with a bit of drama, as their RX45 boat got damaged in La Gomera. Luckily, it was fixed just in time for the race start and the team headed off on December 13. Little did they know what awaited them! With the start of the race bringing heavy weather which challenged the entire fleet. It was however the last days of the crossing that stand out clearest for the team, not because it recently happened, but because the team faced arguably some of the most technically difficult weather in the history of the race!🌪️
Completely stuck +30nm from the island, the team could not make any progress towards the finish line. A mix of para-anchor, going North, going South, going East, going nowhere, left the four women in a very stressful situation; not knowing whether it would be possible to finish the race unassisted. We never doubted them and nor did their massive following☝🏼
