One of the best things you can do to help that coat, and yourself, would be to add a splash of pine tar to the mix. Once called Stockholm Tar, pine tar was used by sailors of ol' to keep their ships afloat and is a wonderful preservative for organic materials. Not only does it waterproof the material, but it smells fantastic. That's how British sailors got the nickname 'Jack Tars'. Around the homestead, you'll have no better friend than a pint of pine tar. Great for tool handles and as a poultice for the skin. And did I mention that it repels bugs? Yep. You'll not find borers in wood that's been kept lively and happy with regular applications of pine tar! It really is too bad that folks throughout the UK have forgotten this bit of their culture and tradition.

Hi what kind of pine tar can be applied to the wax? Is it a syrup or a soap?

@@DionyHerowelUmali It depends on which brand you buy. Most of the good ones will be a syrup, but there's one brand that has a horseshoe on the label which is thick as axle grease.

@@WoolysWorld You'll be glad you did. Very flammable stuff, but so is waxed cotton. I love the smell, honestly, and use thinned pine tar on all my tool handles to keep them in good shape. Sailors used the stuff for a thousand years, so we know it works.

Awesome work, just did this to my carhartt jacket. I used a heat gun from about a foot away and that was a huge upgrade over my Lady's dyson hair dryer. I used the the method of "the lone woodman" simplified by "the hidden homestead" great method!

Great video but I would like to suggest a modification. Melt down about a pound of wax and add in about 2oz of pure tung oil, 8oz of mineral spirits and 6oz of tung oil finish. mix that in with the wax, which will create an emulsion. Brush that onto the coat and hit it with a hair dryer or heat gun. The oil will help the wax flow into the fabric and it will darken it a touch and wont look so bleach/blotchy. Get a stiff bristle brush and give the coat a scrubbing afterward, which will help walk the excess wax off the coat. Take the left over and put it in a jar for storage. You can heat it up later and re-apply or treat other garments later.

I have a pair of Carharrt dungarees- not that common in Ire/UK, but really really good. Recommend them. Interesting waxing method - I have never seen it before. I used to use the hairdryer method, but spoke to a Fjallraven rep who said ironing on the wax gives the best results. I have to say he was right. Don’t know why, but it was way more waterproof than the hairdryer method. Great content keep it coming.

Even when the wax wears down and it is not 100% water proof it still adds a huge boost to the durability of the canvas .
I just order the new updated deteoit jacket in small black ,can't wait to wear it . I'm curious if a how good a canvas tarp would hold .

Plus the blanket lining provides a little warmth in itself
