Not to be a party pooper but I think you should use a 2x6 for your topper and a vertical board for support. I thought about the brackets as well or using a Kerg jig. Good no fuss build.

Was looking for inspiration to do a couch table myself and found this. Pre-drilling the holes for the angle brackets was a neat idea. Had bad experience with those in my previous project, so, thanks. And great couch table!
I have had bad experiences as well when I do not pre-drill the holes. It's a simple change but makes a big difference! I hope your table turns out great, thank you for watching!
