johnny miller and i are about the same age and i took up golf about this time in the mid seventies. i have always read his instruction books and watched his videos. i never met him but he seems like a nice guy.
During that ‘76 Open, Johnny Miller knew he was playing with someone very special. Many people don’t know this, but Seve was helping his father on their farm all week before the tournament. Seve’s record is awe inspiring and while he may not have had the number of majors as some of the other all time greats, he was, without a doubt, the most innately gifted golfers who ever lived. RIP, great man….hard to believe you are gone.
It must have been hell to win against all the legends back then, today their great but look at the improved equipment, the ball, the manicured course's, I grew up playing persimmon woods, forged irons from the 60'd and won many trophies in junior golf. I feel today that all makes it a little easier.
Totally agree with the commentators and Johnny Miller. If said he was about today he would be the ultimate golfing superstar again and would eclipse anyone else.He had a God-given talent thats not seen in any other golfer. Jack Nicklaus said that Seve plays a game he only played in his dreams. I think that is the best way to describe the Matador himself.
I remember being a teenage boy in the 80's taking up golf. I started to watch golf on tv, when I saw Seve. You were drawn to him and his game, he really was Popular. He never won like Woods, but he sure did have a following like Woods. Funny but golfers back then just looked like your Dad, but Seve looked like a movie star, and Johnny looked like an Athlete.
I was at the 1976 Open and, thanks to my ludicrous obsession with Tony Jacklin, I only saw Seve hit one shot, but it was THE one to see. His chip between the bunkers on the last, I was in the crowd that ran across the fairway. I'll never forget the groan as the crowd assumed Seve's run up was a duff, which then turned into a breathtaking roar as everyone cottoned on to the brilliance the shot in fact revealed.
I know nothing about miller or ballesteros, what i do know is when i staRted playing ngolf,i was given a set of slazenger johny miller blades, anyone who says dont start with blades is wrong, plenty of practise and you can play or not, modern golfers moan a lot i cant hit this or that club,it aint the club buddy its you. May the force be with you.
Miller got into a slump 1977 got out of it 1979 and then won Torrey pines Riviera ( where should have won again 1982 2shot lead 2holes to go & lost in playoff! He had the putting yips for years even 1976! His last win Pebble Beach 1994! His first win 1971 his last 1994! He was leading Masters in 1971 by 2 with 4holes to go! He was 11 shots behind Nicklaus Masters 1975 after 2rounds and missed Birdie putt on 18 to tie him! He was 1 of the Best!
Lee Trevino summed the players of today up perfectly. They play for the Money, They'll All Millionares. Several LOVED THE GAME, and would of played for free. You can be worth Millions today, and never Win anything
They keep saying that there is no one like Seve now, and even though he was before my time from what I have seen and heard........isn't Bubba like that?
+MrKydaman Not even close. The closest thing to Seve is Phil Michelson in this era, but Phil is past his prime now. Head to head, however, each in their prime, Seve was better though.
I totally understand why you would say that but Bubba cannot hold a candle to Seve any day, especially off the golf course or energy wise, besides the very game.
JM was a a Mormon. After graduating from high school and before they enter college, Mormons are supposed to go on a two-year "mission" in another part of the country or world to spread the gospel. You've probably seen them, traveling in twos on bikes, knocking on doors. So did Miller go on a mission? Mormons are also required to attend Sunday school and church every Sunday. JM played on the Tour every Sunday when he made the cut. And later he would go onto being a golf commentator (NBC) every Sunday, as he is now. So how was he able to be a practicing Mormon (Member of the LDS church.) Johny did you stop practicing your religion? Just curious. I have nothing but respect for you as one of the great golfers of your era, maybe not so much as a TV commentator ("Rocco looks like he should be cleaning Tiger's pool).
Seve and Johnny were great but the tour is tougher now then it ever was. The players are better today then they were in the 70's and 80's. Johnny and Jack are trying to build their legacy. Like it or not, Tiger in his prime was the greatest golfer ever. Although he is done now and not coming back.
Disagree. Nicklaus had to contend with and go head to head with others in his time who are giants of the game, e.g. Player, Palmer, Watson, Trevino etc. Personally I believe Jack had to overcome more to win, and he'll always hold the record for majors won. Jack's number 1 in my opinion, Woods second.

Seve Ballesteros. What a gem that guy was. He's keeping his ball in the short grass wherever he is right now. RIP Matador.
I enjoyed Miller's honesty as much as his golf prowess, and the way he attacked a golf course. Truly a legend.

Played with Miller at Pebble beach and my Father and uncle...
He was a class act....1995

Seve won truckloads of events in his 20's. He still holds the record for most European Tour wins

yeh Trevino was at home injured watching it on T.V. said to his missus, hey Hun, ( you'd best come see this kid)
2 outstanding players.

To me, Johnny is the Sandy Koufax of golf

Tom Watson was asked about the 5 best rounds he saw. 2 were Miller's.

+Wheyan
Hmm, fair enough
He reminded me of Bubba with the swing out of your shoes style
Seve is a legend regardless
no Bubba ain't fit to lace Sevvy's footjoys . not as a Golfer or man.
MrKydaman .... No....

Matt Damon looks a lot similar to Johnny Miller
Bullshit.
Seve was great but to say that he had something which is currently nonexistent is ridiculous.
bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
Christian Cunningham Who today has a bounless Love of the game, is great with fans, reporters, Everyone?
Poor old Christian is a wanker, just like the golfers he supports. He is probably gay too.
