It's too bad that Chicago is mostly remembered now for soft-rock ballads. This was the Chicago I first fell in love with - a band that jammed as hard as anyone led by the supremely talented Terry Kath.

50 years on, I still have Chicago (1) on my playlist. It is simply awesome!
So true. I was not even two months old when this concert took place and the only song I remember of theirs growing up was "Saturday in the Park" which was great but then the 80s hit then they started putting out stuff like "You're the Inspiration" and I just assumed that they were a soft rock band and never was interested in hearing any of their old stuff. Then when I heard 25 or 6 to 4, it lead me to check out Chicago IX and I realized that I liked every track on there. Then I started listening to the early albums and realized that this band was a freaking treasure. I had no idea Terry Karth was such a god on guitar.

I always liked how Terry and Pete would trade off lead vocals on certain songs. Those two would handle it well, without trying to outdo each other.

They didn't try to out do each other, because Terry was a baritone, Peter was a high tenor, and Terry couldn't reach those high notes clean and clear like Peter, you can see they respected each others talents as well as compliment. Thats what made it work, almost like Mike Porcaro (Rip) described the Bobby Kimball era of the Toto line-up which let their 6 grammys in 1983. Very similar indeed.
Peter Cetera's voice was amazing in this song.

I just can't see how how he could play that blistering lead annd and rythem too all through a song, while singing those amazing vocals at the same time. what concentration and awsome talent.
thats one of the reasons Kath was unique..his ability to sing..through difficult rhythms..plus solo..and play the best rhythm guitar on the planet.!!

I was not a Cetera fan in the 80s, but when he played with these original 6, he played a slapping bass. My 68yo self forgot this beautiful song made my cry.
Ditto. PC plays a particularly kick ass, melodic bass line on this one. It leapt into my mind when I saw an interview where he said McCartney is a huge influence on his style.

Sounds like possibly among the greatest gifts ever . This is fantastic music. Although I was born in 74 when I discovered music like this and allman brothers I discovered music that's great to listen to no matter what mood I'm in. I'm also a musician and Terry kath is criminally underrated he should be among the greats but I feel like the horns turn some people off

I was lucky enough 2 have seen Chicago w/ Terry Kath several times: 1st time in 1971 in Harrisburg, PA. Blown away hardly describes the experience, I fell in love w/ the band. Terry's talent as a guitarist & singer was unbelievable. He'd be a rock SuperStar now had he lived. Long live. Chicago & the memories of Mr. Kath!!!

I love Chicago, but I question your use of the superlative "greatest." Led Zeppelin and the Stones were both doing pretty good work in 1970.

One of my favorite Chicago songs and one that showcases the band's talents and epitomizes why the original seven were so good. Like a finely tuned 8-cylinder vehicle firing on all cylinders. And Terry Kath was just unbelievable, a total monster on guitar. Can't wait to see daughter Michelle's documentary.
Terry made this album #1 for me.

Very impressed with Lee's playing on this. Not obvious... but it's a blistering tune... nonstop .. sounds great. Nothing like the Chicago horn section sound.

I absolutely love early Chicago especially their first couple of albums. They are pure gold. There is just something about this song in particular that makes it stand above most of the rest. I feel like it is one of the most underrated songs of all time. What a classic.

@@brianlaurin8675 I did see them in their prime, in the mid 70's at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. They made a good job of the several shows I saw there. See Leonid and Friends for the continuation of the original "Chicago" sound.
This (Out in the Country), is undoubtedly the defining creation and undeniable sound that is Chicago. This Sound is their identity with every member working as a team of disciplined and dedicated musicians delivering a quality performance, every time. And this composition is a Terry Kath creation. Well done, guys!

Hi We were a French tribute CTA Band in the 70's. We used to play all the songs of the first albums. But we don't record anything. My favourites songs were in the country, Mongonucleosis 25 or 6 to 4 and Beginnings. The name of our band was Transfert. And we saw Chicago in Paris in the 70's.

Terry was my influence after George Harrison.Used to do this song with a horn group where I played guitar and sang Terry's part.Was in Heaven when I did.Need to do a track on it and perform it solo soon( no one is paying for 7-9 pieces anymore-sadly!)

My favorite song off a great album.
Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, Chicago at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, Conn., performing Chicago II in its entirety. I've seen them in concert probably 8 times over the last 30 years, but I never would have thought I'd have the chance to hear this stuff live and in person. It'll sound different without Terry and Peter, but it's still great music, and I'm really looking forward to it.

+Anthony Festa, My mom got me hooked on Chicago years ago when I was a young teenager. The old members wasn't there, but Chicago 21 had just came out. I got that album on cassette tape.lol! It had "hearts in pieces" on it. It was summer time in the early 90s. Good memories! :-)

Poor Danny having trouble with his drums,, bass drum pedal looks like, he was definitely given it a work out with those 16th notes talk about one quick foot driving the crap out of that band.. Terry was the battery but Danny was the fire.. lt was the worst thing Chicago could have done was to fire Danny , besides I thought at the beginning they all agreed that nobody could be fired. Danny Seraphine is such a great drummer. I was hoping Chicago would put whatever was going on hi them then in the past and bring back an old friend the best drummer they ever had back in the band, Chicago will sound like Chicago again. I mean what could be that bad that they wouldn't what him back in the band?! Maybe they might be back on the charts if they did. There's no way Tris imboden came even close to driving Chicago the way that Danny Seraphine could drive a band..

When I was younger, in my days on college, I loved this band because of the voice of Terry Kath and the trombone sound of James Pankow. A pal of mine heard Blues at that time and used to scroff about Chicago. He called it "All the happy people music" :-)
I understood it later on: It's a little bit "sweetish".
There is no question: It was a band of very professional musicans.
But I found Blood Sweat & Tears much more better.
Chicago started very hopeful, with some good douple-LPs - but got under influence of Peter Cetera to much into direction "girl's music".
Susisaftig .I agree how Peter turn this bad ass group into a girl music band. Just as Steve Perry turn Journey into a girl music band
Let's say: The had a grandiose start, to go into insignificant boring mainstream, already during the Seventies. I regret that. May be it was the first band combining jazz and rock in a very special American rural style. - From time to time I use to hear them, as a kind of reminiscence to my youth.
