Hey Ape, I APPRECIATE this video! I have the 949E in my shack, and you know I use the 902B in my POTA activations. And who would have known that’s days after this video that MFJ would announce their closing, but I can even BEGIN to express how much I love and appreciate the price and convenience of their manual tuners, I love that I can match much better than an automatic! 73 my buddy.
Hey Brent. Glad you like the video and I agree that the news is very disappointing
I have a 949E in my shack, and I have an old MFJ travel tuner that I use for POTA. They work great if you keep them clean. Also... in the field, a manual tuner is less draw on your battery.
Fun story - I backed my car over the travel tuner in the garage. I unpacked after a POTA, set the tuner on the garage floor, and got distracted. Later that night, I put the car into the garage and felt something under the tire while backing up. I pulled ahead and looked, and there's the travel tuner on the floor. It stopped the car, I didn't crunch it. The only damage is one of the plastic corners on the box cracked and the toe-roid came unglued from the bottom of the case.
Durable! Good point about battery power 👍
Palstar is the best manual tuner you can buy.
But DIY is the best, spherical variometers, vaccum capcitors ect.
Those Palstar are pretty nice 👍
I scored and got one with a roller inductor for 60 bucks at my clubs local swap shop. It’s a great piece of equipment
That’s a heck of a deal, congrats 👍
Smokin video Ape. Adjustments on the front of a meter are usually to zero the needle on the meter movement.
Good point, you are correct 👍
I have the 969. Love it. George Jetson could use it without yelling Jane at the top of his lungs.
lol, thanks for watching Dominic 👍
Deja Vu
PS. Happy Birthday Mr. Marconi (April 25)
Hey Hollywood 👍
Will this Tuner work with the Chameleon Antenna CHA TDL ?
Yes
I found an email today from MFJ announcing they are shutting down in May. I bet it’s been sold, though
I got that email about an hour ago but had heard it was potentially coming, it’s a shame
Sad to see them go, some of their stuff is good enough, especially for the $$
@@bassangler73 agreed, and I suspect they help keep prices down
I agree 100%@@TheSmokinApe
Is that load a wire wound inductive load
I would imagine it’s a resistive load
What I should have said is that load a wire wound resistor? If so it would be reactive and not purely resistive as a dummy load should be.
Correct, you want a non-inductive resistor
Better buy them now. Martin Jue announced today 4/25/2024 he is shutting all his brands. They well be open until all their brands are sold out of products.
Sad news for sure
MFJ keeps installing the knobs wrong. Fully unmeshed should be, 0 ( minimum capacitance ) fully meshed, 10 ( maximum capacitance )
Also, there is an unconfirmed rumor that MFJ has stopped production as of May 17, 2024 and is going out of business.
It’s confirmed, they are indeed closing shop
I guess you're in mourning over the news about MFJ. Love them or hate them they've accessorized a lot of shacks.
I think you'll find that power is needed for the peak reading part of the SWR meter.
The news does suck. And that makes seance about the average because it needs to hold…. Good catch!
I prefer manual tuner over auto tuners.
I’ve been digging the manual ones lately 👍
Looks like you put MFJ out of business
Yeah, I heard the news… shame.
It is no Yaesu FT-102, just saying.
lol LC
Very sad to hear that MFJ are closing their business along with sister brands such as Cushcraft etc.
Yeah, it’s a shame
Junk
Very insightful
I guess I could have elaborated. MFJ would not be closing if they had any, any type of quality control. Every piece of MFJ gear I ever worked on had issues and many are stupid ones like not soldering components. It’s a shame because they could have made some good gear.
I would agree there have been some QA problems but I also have a time of their product that have worked fine for years. It is a shame how the story of MFJ has turned out.
