Di Stefano aveva iniziato precocemente il declino vocale,dovuto a un repertorio troppo oneroso.
Ciò non toglie che il timbro della sua voce,rimane unico e ineguagliabile,in campo tenorile.
Il calore umano che emanava dalla sua persona oltreché dal suo canto, è forse senza precedenti sulla scena lirica, popolata di divi d'ogni calibro e presunzione. Quella sua aria di eterno ragazzo spensierato, contento, espansivo, generoso, felice di fare partecipi gli altri del suo dono divino, del suo privilegio, era davvero accattivante e contagiava tutti quanti lo avvicinavano.

Il canto , puro, legato, aperto ... Bellissmo libero per superiorità ... Non riesco a descrivere quella che, per me e per chi ascolta è una performance definitiva, se non restitutiva della Manon di Puccini. La sua interpretazione , il suo lirismo e il suo stile mi toccano come nessun altro può... Preferisco questa versione live perchè si sente la presenza del pubblico è come avere la sensazione di essere lì.Insuperabile, divino Pippo !!!!

L'approccio interpretativo di Di Stefano ha una logica schiacciante: il melodramma di per se stesso porta ad atteggiamenti che non hanno niente in comune con la misura naturale delle cose in quanto parla un linguaggio non naturale; quindi per cercare di dare una parvenza di verità al personaggio e non scadere nel gigionismo o nel kitsch, occorre tenere in scena un portamento che sia il più naturale possibile. E' questa la naturalezza unica di Di Stefano!

Wonderful, warm, sumptuous, supple, expansive, free, pure, legato, open sound...Bel Canto par excellence...not enough adjectives to describe what, for me, is a definitive - if not idiomatic, rendition worthy of setting the gold standard....his voice, lyricism and style touch me as few others can....thank you for posting this - without noise reduction: which can reduce the overall "presence" or ambiance in live performance....I prefer this version even more than the other (studio?) available here....warts and all...nothing like having the sense of being there.💓
I agree with you on the warts and all. A good recording of a stage performance takes you to a magical time and place. Studio recordings no matter how good don't have that magic.

Je pense que Di Stefano était un De Grieux Magnifique.( Le chanteur pense a toutes les nuances, aux paroles, a la psychologie du personnage) Je pense que soit le seul qui soit capable de la lecture aussi profonde. C'est le seul De Grieux possible.

Dear Antonio, some food for thought: Isn't it the idea to enjoy what is present, instead of predicting a demise after the fact? Did you also predict Domingo's, Alagna's and Carreras's eventual decline or did you not think about that when they were in their prime while you were enjoying them?
