I have played the bass for 35 years and I must admit that Mark is still one of the amazing player around. Tight, precise and he sings on top of this! It is not a competition though, but Mark is fantastic.
You are hearing the exotic sounds of the Alembic Series bass guitar. It's extremely clear, articulating sound that no other bass could match. Alot of "low ball" bassist don't like them because it exposes their playing flaws. These were made back in the early 70's. They defined the way bass should sound, and had a huge influence on many different music venues, especially funk, disco, and jazz. BIG BIG sound, larger than life. You're looking at $18,000 new.
I learned about level 42, like most americans I'd imagine, by way of the smash hit,semi-crossover,"Something About You",which I played into the ground...literally. I'd play along with(drums) the album/tape for hours. I was delighted to discover that they had already written plenty of music. As a result, Phil Gould,s style of playing(strong, driving pulse, vibrant "colors" with a great "feel" for the music. I'm glad to hear that they are still doing their thing. The guys have a great chemistry.
Who would have thought that 25 years later drummer Gary Husband is now playing keyboards with John McLaughlin and that guitarist Jakko Jakszyk is now lead vocalist / guitarist with King Crimson? Well, the latter was in fact quite inevitable considering his pedigree and links to the UK prog scene.
My 7yo niece asked me about "that metal thing that the man was putting in his mouth." I said it was a saxophone...I weep for the youth of America!! Nice post...thanks.
A great big band version .Just one of the best bands ever ,tight as hell. Love,Mark that series II Alembic, unique tone .Alot of fire in everyone's playing ,Man Gary Husband is one excellent drummer!!!
oh I know this is my FAV of this concert ... just love their stage antics and playing here .. its got to be the best performance of this song i ve seen so far :) .
unfortuantely Guranteed Live video which is what this is called is just on PAL VHS ... now if you can find a play that plays PAL vids and your willing to go onto EBAY then this vid can still be found on there at times .. I WISH they would make this one into DVD because its prob one of their very best live performances in my opinion!!!
Ty so so much for posting these . since they didnt make a dvd of this one .. 'sniff' i think this one shouldve been .. my humble opinion ! every clip i see from this concert is awsome :) . yep .. always love that bass and who s playin it ;)
This is not a walnut. The top and back is made of cocobolo, a Nicaraguan rare type of rosewood. Oily, very dense wood, one of the heaviest wood on earth. Extremly expensive, hard to handle but has a unique sound. The basic core body wood here is the classic mahogany and it also had two maple inserts between them. The neck is maple and purpleheart, the fingerboard is ebony. It is an Alembic.
@daviduk40 I dont think anyone could "outplay" Mark. It is not about speed or anything, but he is bloody good. AND he sings at the same time - completely agree with you. I play the bass (for 25 years) and find it SO hard to sing at the same time. Mind you Sting once said that he found it impossible to sing without playing the bass, so probably what you are used too:-)
@daviduk40 not only that, but if he'd been in an instrumental fusion band, I'm sure he would have been just as well respected as the guys you mentioned!
first time i've watched this particular performance. very good. i lost touch with level 42 at the time they did this (i was into raving) - who is the guy playing lead guitar? fantastic extended solos in the middle. and loving the early '90s hairstyles of the audience!
I have to say that I think the sound of Alembics are not as good at that of Jaydee and Status basses. Don't get me wrong, Alembics are lovely instruments and having played one on holiday in Florida's Bass Central shop they do sound good and feel good to play. I think I may get some abuse for this comment but I just prefer the sound of my Jaydee and Status Kingbass 2.
"really good, entertaining songs with good vocals too, which you can't really say for any other major bass player" I would suggest that Sting (despite being the insufferable tosser that he is) would fit into this category you just described.
who cares if Jaco and Victor are more techincal, i wouldnt say stanley was... but whatever. I'm sure all of these amazing bassists youre so desperately trying to fight for, would hate to think they were being played off against another bassist who I'm sure they greatly respect. Music of this standard isn't about one upping eachother, it's about contributing the best music you can to the world, and thats what all of these Bass players do.

The best performance of The Chinese Way ever!!!

Husband was always a top flight keys player.

Level 42 is one of those bands that will never get old. Well, technically they will but their music will always be phenomenal in my opinion

It's a donkeys years old record but is still one of the best....I still love level 42

Love the Walnut bass guitar!

fantastic extended solos in the middle. and loving the early '90s hairstyles of the audience!
Jakko Jakszyk, now lead singer/guitarist of King Crimson
Crashman! This is Crashman's theme!
for those who noticed my incomplete sentence, Phil's style- rubbed off on me. That Mark King ain't to shabby either! funky a#$ WB!!!LOL
don't think they play it too fast, i don't care... they also play it this fast at retroglide, but it's definitly a good version, 5 stars!!!
damn, they all must have snorted a few lines before this one! LOL!!
RTF ending style.
I think they played it to fast here...but awesome like always

SOUNDS LIKE CRASH MAN'S STAGE FROM MEGAMAN 2
Why is this version so quick?
yes and we need to tell ALL our North American friends about them .. i sure do rofl!

Ouch!!! This version is too fast.
+Maz 1973 Ouch!! You're too old ;)
The faster the better.
+Marcel Ti I'm old, and I love this version.
+Lee Brown I'm middle aged and I think it's too fast. What hope have I ??
+Maz 1973 None. You're condemned to listening to "It's Over" and "Eyes Waterfalling" (their two most depressing songs) from now until you cheer up.
@daviduk40 Polite Remark Stanley Clarke is good wi the bass and good vocal. Hate to admit it I think SC is marginally better
A bit to fast,or well playing in front of the line, shame.
lol cute, tbf he's only 7 :P
its way to fast.
Presentalos a todos que egoista te viste Mark
What? He not selfish at all. What do you mean
