13:45 99% sure I know who Jacques is talking about, and Orin is his first name. Orin Martin is the long time manager of the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz, and has a book with illustrations by his daughter, Manjula Martin, called Fruit Trees for Every Garden. He also has a number of very informative videos on pruning on the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology UA-cam channel. The videos were super helpful to me when figuring out pruning young fruit trees a couple of years ago.
I literally just watched a video of his on pruning fruit trees this morning to learn how best to shape my plum trees. The video was extremely helpful and very informative.

I inherited a pear with the house i bought. I was getting these tiny a** pears bc I later found out, pears do better with a friend. But even the itty bitty pears were the best thing I have ever tasted. I got a 4 in 1 on clearance at the end of last year and I'm telling you... "I'm here for it!"

I'm with Jacques on the pink lady apples, but my absolute favorite is the Opal apple. A few years ago, I bought one at whole foods and it made me emotional with how perfectly crisp, sweet, and tangy it was. The flavor was much more complex than its golden skin let on. I only saw them for one season and only at whole foods. I've been searching since.

My thoughts are you each should take one type of pear then trade scion and graft your own two in ones!! Same with cherries since the only self pollinating one is royal crimson. Coffee cake needs the chocolate persimmon to pollenate it otherwise it stays astringent. I got a chocolate for mine this season. Next year if your looking to graft the coffee cake, I’ll have scion!

Love this! I put in 2 peach, 2 apple and a plum last year, with the intention of pruning to keep them under 7 feet tall. Then I watched you (and the mention of pruning in your new book!) and realize I was on the right track with my fruit trees and will be adding more this year. However, this does not beat the 100 pecan bare-root trees my Mom and I bought about 40 years ago. My dad just about had a stroke. But luckily a tracker with a post hole digger. Unfortunately, they sold that property about 2 years after planting all of them.
Don't worry too much about finding low chill pears. Most italian pears (Citron de Carmes, Coscia, Bella di Giugno, etc.) will do well in San Diego, as Sicilia is at roughly the same latitude, and many varieties grow there. American varieties Seckel, Warren, Magness, and pineapple will do well in SoCal.
Kevin when you talk about the texture of apples there are different textures for different apples. Some are more crisp some are more soft try different types. For general eating I like a very crisp sweet tart apple. For baking a softer sweet apple is better that's me what about everyone else? I live in NY so we get a lot of different apples in the stores. Plus lots of places to pick your own in the fall

Last year I planted three low chill cherries: Royal Lee, Minnie Royal, and Royal Crimson. 2nd year in the ground and I see some flower buds forming. Royal crimson is self pollinating while Royal Lee and Minnie Royal need pollinators. They will each pollinate each other and Royal Crimson will pollinate both.
I've already planted them now, but I was wondering about tree spacing. It was hard to find any definitive answers. I bought dwarf varieties, and the most common spacing answer seemed to be minimum 12ft between. You guys seem to be planting them wayyyy closer. Also near your veg beds. Do you not worry they will interfere. What do you know that I don't, please? 😅😊👍 Cheers, guys.
Oh man, love watching San Diego January when we are huddling under our grow lights for fake sunlight here in Ohio. But at least we have 1200 chill hours (💪💪💪) Excited to see how the orchard pans out, we have 30 fruit trees we are planting in March as well!

Pears were an afterthought in my Food Forest. Oh man I am so glad I finally decided to plant a couple. I love my homegrown pears! Have a 3 in 1 pear on order 😊
You definitely need more wood chip mulch to beat back that bermuda grass! :)
I inherited 2 Lime trees (Bears limes) when I bought my place. They got a loving prune just before Christmas (I'm in Christchurch, New Zealand on the coast - temperate oceanic climate) so I'm not expecting much fruit this season but they'll be back!
I look forward to seeing the video with Tom Spellman. I know you've had him on before but he really is a wealth of information regarding trees and planting. Plums, pears, Cherry s, dragon fruit, passion fruit, and an orchard of varying citrus. Where's the peaches and nectarine? How fantastic that you can have all that variety of fruit from your own yard. No pesticides and fresh so it tastes better than any store bought fruit. Great job on the homestead orchard Kevin .

Edited to add: Bartlett pear, an apricot and granny smith apple for canning. I already have a pink lady and another apple. It's so exciting planning for future harvests!

I won't trash talk apples though. Try a Spartan, especially right off a tree - so crisp and sweet. Spartan and Macintosh are probably the best eating apples, but maybe San Diego is too warm? If you ever see what looks like a fresh Spartan, try it. Some supermarket apples can definitely be mealy ('Red Delicious' comes to mind).

My buddies new property has Bartlett pear tree that looks like it’s never been trimmed or maintained a day in its life but last summer it had some of the best pears I ever tasted…cold pressed pear juice on its own is heavenly…makes sense why it’s used as a sweetener in other juices. Beats a apple to me any day of the week.
Now that you mention it I have seen it as a blend in juice but never as a standalone, it must be crazy sweet!
The pears from my tree are the sweetest I've ever had. Makes me sad that they don't last very long in storage but they make amazing pear butter
Everyone has preferences. I feel like the go pro zooms in very well and I can read the plant labels if it’s not announced. Like sometimes UA-camrs don’t mention all the fruit trees around the fruits they are shopping for and I am curious to know.

Good luck with Hops, they need crazy long days to bloom, that's why they grow them in Idaho and Washington, maybe you can coax them with some grow lights in the summer?? I saw a scraggly one once bloom in Carpenteria near a long lit patio.

I got Bartlett and Asian pear, royal lee,royal crimson,Minnie royal cherry, two different jujubes, astringent and non-astringent persimmon,pluerry, and pluot this year. Go big on edibles.

Oooooo! We had a Bartlett pear in our back yard growing up and I'm telling you, there's not much better than taking a bite of a juicy Bartlett right off the tree!
Yes 100 precent agree, Back in my hometown we have a couple different fruit trees that were planted there back in the day, one of them was a giant pear tree in the center of downtown not sure what variety it was but it was absolutely delicious and way better tasting than anything I've bought from the grocery store, I would harvest about 3 plastic grocery bags full off the tree at a time there was a lot more but I didn't have a ladder 😅
Agree with Jacque, Pink Lady is the best apple.
It has everything I need! It is crisp, crunchy, acidic, and just sweet enough.

Highly recommend planting hops in a container. They can sent shoots feet away from the main rhizome. They are awesome but will go nuts in your soil and watering!
I cannot believe the selection! And now I’m chill hour envious. In Houston we are lucky to get two weeks in a year of chill hours. ( a a few days to kill everything)
You definitely need to get a pluot tree. A plum/apricot hybrid that I’m obsessed with.
I ordered a couple fruit cocktail trees with no place to plant them. Im going to have to pot them. 😂I can’t resist!!!

I’m so jealous of the amount of variety you get to choose from. Where I live Nurseries only have the absolute most basic of fruits: apples, sour cherries, and plums if you are lucky. I know we are in a cold zone but I still wish they would get more to choose from. Peaches and pears at least. And I’ve never seen a nursery that sold bare root trees. If you want any decent variety you are forced to order online.
Man I hit some major frustrations last Fall concerning my choice in persimmon tree variety. I chose a catalog tree that was called "Nakita's Gift". The full description was right down my alley and it boasted that it tastes like caramel. NOT! It was so very astringent I thought it was going to turn my face inside out. So I tried every way possible to make sure I was ripening them properly etc. It was the most inedible fruit I've ever experienced so I cut the tree down this Spring. I've since done a lot of research to figure out what to purchase in the future. So do your research and save yourself $40 and 3 years of wasted time.
Where I am in the mountains of Idaho a great fruit tree is one that survives the winter 🥶! We have to cage them to keep the deer away.

Spent around $2,870 on fruit trees lost $400 on dead fruit tree or diesese. Cherry, plum, apple all got diesese in FL.

Really wish I had good weather for pruning right now. I could really use some garden time right now.
10a newly changed to 10b Florida here. Just watching this now after just purchasing flordahome and hood pears this past week. No idea why suddenly the urge to do pears 😂 But here everything says Floridahome is 150 chill hours and harvest starting mid July for Florida. I checked with local nursery and they said they fruit here. We really only get about 30 chill hours but my peach rated 100/150 does really well.
Orin Martin is indeed the tome of knowledge. The 3 acre Chadwick Garden at UCSC, under his care for 40 years, is Eden on Earth. You must visit.
I'm with Kevin regarding apples vs pears. I'll eat both uncooked, but a pear is my preferred choice. When the fruits are cooked, I prefer apple over pear.

We have a staghorn fern growing in a tree for almost as long as ive been alive. If you let them, they get maaaaaasive. the tree branch will break before the fern does im sure of it lol
What wonderful fruit trees. Nohing like very fresh fruit. Th birds will especially love you when the cherries fruit. I hope you love the birds.

Hey you guys should explain some of the terminology you guys use. Like you said the pear tree was "foreign" I think is what you said and I've actually never heard that before. Also what's the difference between the Florida Home Pear and the Hood European Pear? looking to get a couple more fruit trees this year and want to get the best ones I can! Love the videos as always. Keep up the good work
One of the pears was a 4-in-1 meaning it was 4 different varieties grafted onto 1 tree. So you plant 1 tree but get 4 different flavored fruits. The difference in the other two might be in the flavor but also they have different harvest windows and help pollinate each other for bet fruit production and size.

Platycerium Grande - Fun to grow - they look prehistoric to me. Love them.
According to Gary Matsumoto (he’s on UA-cam and knows soooo much about fruit trees)at Laguna Hills Nursery in California and Royal Lee and Minnie Royal didn’t flower simultaneously so they were not pollinating each other well. Royal Crimson, a newer cherry, flowers in between and is suppose to be self pollinating . It was suppose to solve the pollination issue. He also mentioned that it could take 5-7 years before they really start producing. Minnie Royal is a softer cherry and perhaps less desirable. He recommended Royal Crimson and Royal Lee together.
I wish I had your space. I found some ultra dwarf fruit trees and wanted the cherry, but chill hours are like 600-800. Not gonna happen in the OC, so I got the weeping plum.
I was shopping for bare-root trees this weekend too. Bought 6 sticks. Trying to find some persimmon bare roots in the CA Bay Area east bay.

I was recently gifted a fig tree and a crab apple that is made for Texas. I’m in Texas. I’m excited because I wanna make crab apple jelly the fig tree we always had a fig tree when I was young we grow up with fig tree we grew up with pomegranate trees Kumquat trees, pear trees, quad mulberry. Oh my God we have I even have growing wild in my backyard I have. Elderberry it grows wild in my backyard.
I have propagated the mulberries for people, the loquat, the elderberry cleaning my friends, have elderberry plants for me ..
I would agree with the apples vs pair when it comes to store-bought but fresh off-the-tree apples are unmatched tbh 🤤🤤

You should try a sugar bee apple. It’s like a jolly rancher.
You may think pears are better until you try sweet and sour autumn apple variety that tastes like chilled crispy super juicy sweet and sour gummies (grandma had one tree tike that, sadly no idea what variety it might have been)
If you want to add one more tree to that collection, I have a black sapote with a branch i need to prune, but if youre interested i can try air layering it before i prune it 👀im also in the SD area!

Green Fragrant pears and korean pears are my fave. The green fragrant ones are like guavas sweet and smooth. While korean pearsxare ultra sweet and huge.
It's good to know there's low chill hour options for some of these! My range is 325-425.

I grow Asian pears, which are definitely light years away from the store bought when fresh off the tree, but European pears have to be ripened off the tree
