You are a very nice teacher! No implicature here!
You are a very nice tutor :)
😆
Hahaha i see what you did there
He is informative, knows how to clearly explain
nope, he's a good tutor
That is so crazy that sarcasm doesn't exist in every language. I also observed that the use and understanding of sarcasm can vary depending on the language. Would you say this is true?
Violating and floating are not the same. We flout the maxims creating implicatures and we expect the other person to understand why we said what we said (in other words what the implicature is). While violating means simply to lie. There’s no implicature.. you don’t know the reason why the person lied.
Exactly and sarcasm is related to floating not violating like irony and we find this sarcasm especially with comedians because they want us to take that implied thought am I right ?
Exactly good!
This video was so funny and wholesome at the same time (at the end). You are the reason I won't fail my Ling101 class lol and I mean it. Thank you for everything!
First Maxim made me understand why Sheldon Cooper from tbbt never understood sarcasm
Many thanks for your explanation
You realy make this lesson clear to me
"What would I be without puns? I'd be an unfunny man. I mean I'm already an unfunny man but I'd be even unfunnier."
LMAO this part killed me😭😭😭
It would be good if you make a vid on relevance theory :) thanks for your work btw
somebody oughta tell my EX about the maxim of quality. am i right fellas
lol WORDDDDDD.
Hey guys! These are great videos. Simplified and informative. I am having an exam in two days and I have some troubles understanding the following exercise. Could you help me please?
Identify the implicatures in the following exchanges. Are they the result of obeying or disobeying the maxims? Which maxim do they violate or obey?
A: Do you love me?
B: I am quite fond of you.
A: Was there a fiddler at the bar last night?
B: There was a man scraping a bow.
A: My car’s broken down.
B: There’s a garage around the corner.
me too I'm here for learning.
I have a question, so here’s the scenario: A: what did you bought in the grocery? B: I just bought something. In that kind of conversation, is B both violating quantity and manner OR just quantity?
Both of them my teacher told us that we can have one conversation that contains one up to three maxims ... quantity ..manner and relevance because he did not say enough information and he is avoiding the real answer
HI. I'm sorry but this wrong and makes the classic mistake of mixing up violations with the flouting of maxims. For example: Sarcasm is not a VIOLATION. It is FLOUTING. Similarly at 4.00. Please can you remove this video or at least rerecord it to make the distinction between VIOLATION (deliberately breaking the maxim to mislead the hearer) FLOUTING (creating an additional meaning the hearer is SUPPOSED to recover) and infringements (breaking the maxim accidentally). Thanks.
Great video
your voice is too low
thank you for this video. i was somehow confused about these maximss
Consider our desire for very flexible language is particular to our culture, while some other cultures use much more direct language.
In the context of moral reasoning that relies on direct reasoning, someone who finds direct language boring is a bit of a red flag.
The maxim of quality has a context of moral reasoning. We intrinsically understand the moral context when we are falsely accused.
Thanks to u i figure out the differences between implicature and presupposition thank you🌹
Hello I'm working on my BA monograph and it is about implicatures in the political discourse: ....
and the professor said that in the theoretical part, I should talk about the critisim around grice's theory of conversational implicatures. Could you help me with any references I can rely on concerning this, or the names of some linguists who critisize it.
So many examples that suggest murder or death! What do they imply about the course? Are they a warning? 😂😂😂👀👀👀
Please could you answer me what is the criticism behind conversational implicature theory
thank you. you are great
I was laughing the whole video but 7:14 is LIT
Isnt this studied in pragmatics instead of senantics?
Thanks alot
And I want to ask about lexical cloning
could you please explain Austin's speech acts, too?
You sir are amazing
Very funny explanation. You're a nice teacher!(really) ^)
Thank you so much
Incredibly useful video! It was a clear explanation of such an instresting topic! Thanks for sharing!
Man … I FUCKING LOVE U !
Interesting!!!!!
there are language without sarcasm? I highly doubt that.
I have lived in Japan for 30 years. As I understand things here, although sarcasm is not non-existent, it is very rare and frequently misunderstood.
You can be smart and still fail exams!
Yes! 👏 An example being those with ADHD who struggle to concentrate
Thank you so much
Oh, you're a funny guy by the way 🤣
4:05
Aren’t these topics more commonly associated with pragmatics rather than semantics?
Arrigato
thank you for this video, I have learned more.
I subscribe to the people who love and make puns
Thank you.
great !
Amazing explaination , thank you ☺️
You explain very well ❤️👌
Don't worry, you are funny.

Your videos make me laugh
Almost peed myself @ the pun tangent... never related to something so heavily IN MY LIFE
