Toumani Diabaté is a GRIOT also called Djely. They're HIGHLY trained African families that's taught the African Oral Traditions Customs and history. He's a genius VERY gifted Musician. His son's name Sidiki Diabaté💖💯🔥🖤🤝🏼

But we still refer to its oral origins, and it is sung, with the tune’s elements adding meaning in the manner of punctuation marks. and I always think of the griot in Alex haley’s ‘Roots’ when I hear it. These days we are mostly looking like white Europeans, so it surprised our African neighbours to find out some white people also know their tribal history- we’re very stubborn that way!😂
Been listening to Toumani for decades. A world treasure. I once went to a Taj Mahal concert and low and behold Toumani was one of his sidemen. I couldn't believe a musical deity was sitting there on the stage as "just" a member of the band, and I bet not 5 people in the audience had any idea who he was. This is the gift to us from 70 generations of musicians in Mali. All respect, and thank you so much for sharing your soul with us.

Thank you! I saw Toumani is '89 or so in Boston and it changed my life forever. He spent 15 minutes tuning his Kora after he got up on stage and it just melted into one of the tunes and it was truly celestial, and has been ever since, his presence on Earth.This is such a quick and different version of Djarabi. So beautiful and strange.
Celestial is the best word i can think of to describe the transcendental warmth that pours from his fingers through those strings. Heavenly, magical, sublime.
I shit you not and I have even played the song several times to be sure, at times pausing in the middle: a bird outside is chirping along to this. Seriously.

Sadly I don't think there are a lot of African girls on the continent who can claim to be Toumani's personal friends and students. Typical African behavior: show love to white folks abroad and be indifferent if not feel superior to their bothers and sisters on the continent.
I have not knewn that master Toumani Diabaté has passed away. He is one of my favourite strings player kora from África. It was a great loss, for sure. May his soul rest in peace!

This maybe the first time I heard the kora and it was a magical experience. Toumani is rightfully revered as the master musician or should that be griot from Malian culture who made and introduced the instrument into Western culture.
