RIP
Toumani Diabaté is a GRIOT also called Djely. They're HIGHLY trained African families that's taught the African Oral Traditions Customs and history. He's a genius VERY gifted Musician. His son's name Sidiki Diabaté💖💯🔥🖤🤝🏼
I met Toumani in 1990 when he played his debut concert at New York City's Symphony Space. The airlines had damaged his kora and so he used my kora that I brought back from The Gambia in 1989 for the concert.
Hi David! Long time no see! Are you still playing the Kora? Remember when I came chez toi in Boston @ 25-30 years ago and you recorded a guitar idea I had? Were you ever able to put it in a tune? Hope you are well and playing your awesome music 🌍
To all of you who read this comment know that Toumani Diabaté world left us on Friday July 19, 2024 as you may know he left us several melodies like this one this very beautiful melody, which resembles a great symphony which takes us back in time and we wonder how to thank Toumani. R.I.P.
Been listening to Toumani for decades. A world treasure. I once went to a Taj Mahal concert and low and behold Toumani was one of his sidemen. I couldn't believe a musical deity was sitting there on the stage as "just" a member of the band, and I bet not 5 people in the audience had any idea who he was. This is the gift to us from 70 generations of musicians in Mali. All respect, and thank you so much for sharing your soul with us.
I shit you not and I have even played the song several times to be sure, at times pausing in the middle: a bird outside is chirping along to this. Seriously.
This originated in west Africa stretching from Gambia, Senegal and Guinea, it dates back to the 13th century. The kora was actually mostly reserved during this time to royalty 👸. So yes feel like a queen
Sad day😔- this great Djeli Toumani Diabate has made his transition - 7/19/2024. The Ancestors are awaiting the arrival -and if there's a Heaven -this must be what is sounds like.
Thank you! I saw Toumani is '89 or so in Boston and it changed my life forever. He spent 15 minutes tuning his Kora after he got up on stage and it just melted into one of the tunes and it was truly celestial, and has been ever since, his presence on Earth. This is such a quick and different version of Djarabi. So beautiful and strange.
Celestial is the best word i can think of to describe the transcendental warmth that pours from his fingers through those strings. Heavenly, magical, sublime.
This maybe the first time I heard the kora and it was a magical experience. Toumani is rightfully revered as the master musician or should that be griot from Malian culture who made and introduced the instrument into Western culture.
I was shown this video in college by my wonderful ethnomusicology professor. I had to step out and have a cigarette because it was the most beautiful song I’d ever heard.

acabo de ver uma publicação na "whatsculture" sobre Toumani, estou me perguntando.. como não conhecia isso antes? é um som viajante que te faz questionar coisas que ainda nao se viveu e para outros apenas uma viagem ao tempo.. 👏🏻🤍
Wow, thank you! Toumani is my teacher and a personal friend. Wonderfull to see this video. Sooo young here! :) Warm greetings, Ida from the Netherlands.
Sadly I don't think there are a lot of African girls on the continent who can claim to be Toumani's personal friends and students. Typical African behavior: show love to white folks abroad and be indifferent if not feel superior to their bothers and sisters on the continent.
@@shaneswale1512 Sona is wonderful. My favourite song of hers is the one about her grandmother, i think it may be called Mamamusa. That brings me to tears, i love it when her voice soars. I also enjoy her own rendition of Jarabi.
Ce son m'a aidé à traverser beaucoup de difficultés, aujourd'hui tu es parti, Que dieu ait pitié de ton âme.
Merci pour le Mali 🇲🇱

Wow thanks for sharing this info. I’m from Cameroon 🇨🇲 and i love Malian music. I know Sidike Diabate but did not know Toumani was his father.

Don’t cry because it’s over…. Be happy that it existed !!

RIP to the King of the Kora.
How sad that he has gone.
Like the hammered dulcimer, the kora is a most captivating instrument,
and when well played, as here, it is exquisite.
I adore this guy and his son, they are both talented.
