I need to vent too! We had I think, 25 days of 110 or higher (in AZ) and my garden literally burned to the ground! I was so disgusted. I took a couple of days off and started new seeds and began to tear out all the overgrown squash and tomatoes…now I’m waiting for our fall crops so I can get back in the game!!
I understand and you had it worse than I did. Cheers to ripping and replanting. Good luck.

This is why I really enjoy your channel. Being real. I always scoff at these picture perfect garden videos. I did some chop-n-drop in some areas of the garden to get it ready for peas this weekend. It looks terrible, but it has a purpose! Keep making these real life videos!!!
I really like to see veg gardens with weeds and overgrown plants going to seed.
It's a great way to show things don't have to be perfect to perform.
Plants will still grow when the garden gets a bit messy so long as they get some water and are in good soil.
Thanks for showing us garden reality. 👍
Glad to share and reality is good.

I LOVE harvesting videos. It’s not bragging.. it helps us new gardeners see what’s possible. I find it very inspiring.
I love harvest videos too, they are inspiring 🤩😍🤩😍. Especiqlly on days when im really tired lol. ( wow the typos lol, i need coffee 😂😂)
Agreed. I'm going to attempt peppers again next year thanks to this video. Seeing how well and productive Gary's were, inspired me to try again after not having much success last year.
Going to do the pepper harvest that way so you can see.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you!
Weve got a possible 70 days, ive got growbags ,last years seeds and soil lol Im going to throw some seeds in a bag and see if i can keep them warm and get a harvest. Worst case i get nothing . best i get a small harvest and overwinter them.
I’m so glad you made this video! I am feeling burned out from the heat, the weeds, and the insects. Like you, I get a little revived when the cooler weather comes in September. Videos like this make it OK to have burnout and a messy garden. Thanks.
I just wanted people to know the arent alone.

So understand. My dad passed away when it was time to plant. I had to help mom so I let my beds go to weed but I cut them down and use this year to refresh my beds. Might do a fall garden if it all works out

Go for it positive soul food for the mind and body!
So sorry you lost your dad. Helping your mom was of course the more important priority. The garden will be there when you're ready.
So sorry for your family. If you’re working on your soil, you could also make a plan for fall crops or your Spring crops plan for next year. Don’t try to do too much right now.
Love that you mentioned burn out. It's exactly what I'm going through now. I have plans for a greenhouse, trying to figure out the fall planting schedule and it becomes overwhelming. You are spot on when you talk about the heat. I'm in Virginia and the humidity makes it sometimes unbearable. Been following for years and my first comment. Love your channel.
Believe it or not the heat and humidity is also in PA. Hard to start fall planting in the Community garden for all the weeds.
Thanks so much and burnout is legit.

My shade cloth solution is an inexpensive flea market/ kids sports/picnic shelter. It’s easy to set up , it’s 12 by 12 and maybe 7-8 feet tall. The roof has the pyramid shape. I drape my 40% white shade cloth when it gets hot and secure with bungee cords and zip ties. If I need more coverage I attach another cloth to one of the sides and hang it out to the big tall green tomato stakes. I drop empty plastic soda bottles upside down on the tops of stakes and the shade cloth will float and can be pulled whatever way without needing another person. I’ve used this system three years so far and it doesn’t even rust. During the winter it stays up, I just put the shade cloth away. I think I got it for $175. So glad I tried it.
Great tip and you can find them on sale and at yard sales too.
Make a list. Pick one thing - and focus on that one thing. When done - scrrrraaaaatch it off. Pat yourself on the back and, when ready, move to the the second thing. Yessir!
Exactly!
I just spent 2.5 hrs weeding my pathways today. Still a long way to go! 😅 I had a baby in the spring so this year’s garden has sort of been a bust and totally overgrown. Thanks for posting, now I don’t feel alone!
I hope you baby is healthy and happy. You arent alone and maybe grow some cool crops.

Gary, I love this post - and in conjunction with Gail's GAWG video, really love the positivity of dealing with adversity in the garden. Kudos BTW Gail (2gals) for showing that video if you end up reading this for showing the incredible before and after the management of your garden. Truly inspiring for me! Managing even a small garden for most people is an overtime chore, but at least people are giving extra effort. You've inspired me to show imperfections. Sometimes I'm embarrassed as well to show my "horrible looking overgrown sections", but you help remind us, avid gardeners, we are all experiencing the same thing and it's perfectly normal. Thank you Gary!
Thanks. I really think it's important to realize it's about growing and enjoying, and not always about perfectiion. This section was really an eye sore but a pretty quick turn around. And it will be my future space where I extend cool crops into the summers.
Harvesting videos helps me have an idea of what it’s supposed to look like when it’s ready so I’ll know when to harvest 😊
Ill be doing more next year as part of a series

Thank you - particularly for the comment “this is normal”. When I started on my allotment garden, an old guy told me to pick one hour long piece of work to complete each visit. Then stop and admire your work. Then anything else is a bonus.

UK here. I keep one small compost bin in the centre of my main vegetable garden to help with the overwhelm of weeding. Large bed clearing yes gets tipped over the fence next to main composting area be sorted later. But smaller weeds and prunings/groomings go into smaller central bin, next to which I keep the string, scissors, a trowel, dibber and a table for my coffee cup/flask and a chair. This time of year it’s useful for dumping onto a cleared bed to continue composting that I cover immediately with a pre-cut fitted tarp to keep weed seeds from landing on the beds until I’m ready to use again. It’s a time saver really. I also put excess ready to use compost from main compost bins into empty store bought compost bags turned inside out (black side out) and dot them around the plot (acting as netting weights) to dump onto freshly weeded beds with plants still in…as an ongoing mulch. Same with woodchips to top up paths after Mr Mole has brought up another batch of weed seed bank in his hills! 😄
I love walking through the overgrown abundance of the garden this time of year. Especially early morning. The light, the dew….
Even the blight! 😩 😂
Thanks so much for the tips and cheers. Walking in the morning, through the garden, is wonderful.

Thank you for being honest and real woth us. Gardeners overwhelm is really a thing. My advice- prioritize, ask for help, offer others help, find workable solutions, write things down and dont overthink or hesitate to respond to a garden issue. Hobestly, ive been mistly organic for 7 years. This year a priority was prodiction and i started using miracle grow on plants that are heavy feeders or looked like they needed a shot in the arm as it were. Its made a big difference. Still using organic liquid fertilizer, chicken manure snd worm castings as a standard. Very good year. Much more to learn and grateful for the opportunity to learn from folks like ypu Gary ❤
Great tips. And using the chems for a targeted use is perfectly safe unless you covet being 100%. Good luck.

I really REALLY needed to hear this. My garden got away from me and I was so overwhelmed I pretty much gave up. I did a pretty good job keeping it weeded but this video was very helpful in discussing priorities. I realize now that not spraying first was a big mistake, it's no good to keep the weeds down if the bugs and disease destroy the crop. I was getting out there and killing myself pulling weeds, staggering into the house exhausted and thinking I'll spray another day. Big mistake. It's been a difficult growing season--7 weeks no rain in May & June when everything should have been taking off, followed by the subtropical monsoon with rain and storms, then a couple different weeks of heat indexes of 110-115. I have plenty of notes for next year. This video is giving me the motivation to get out there and rip out the dead squash and cucumbers and put in (JUST A FEW) more plants. Because if there's one big huge lesson I have learned from watching so many of your videos, it's DON'T OVERPLANT. Thank you.
Its amazing. Great place. Good to said that doesn't need to be perfect.
For sure. Its about growing not perfection

I would welcome “overgrown”. Here in southern NM at my place we have had one inch of rain since the beginning of the year. 100+ temps since third week of June. So the only thing that grows is what and where I diligently water. Practically no weeds and no insect issues yet. However we are still waiting for the monsoon rains where the plants can start showing more life. We typically get 1/4 to 1/2 inches at a time. Sometimes a little more. Gardening here is very doable but different. I still gain a lot from your videos that can be applied to my climate. Will check out your blog.
I would LOVE to see what you do with your asparagus patch please!
It actually just stays as it looks till in browns and I cut it back. I will cut some back over the summer to manage the size.

Love the video. Yep we get burnt out esp when it's over 90. Then I realize the plants are almost done producing so I replant. Justtook a sucker off a new tomato I planted this year that I like alot. Had no blossom end rot like the purple Reign. I bel its the variety as I water each the same. I've done shade cloth with the 7 ft staked on my balcony garden so.i can walk under everything.
Im getting my garden transition to the last of warm crops and the beginning of cool crops.

Garden looks great. Undiluted 20% vinegar does well on the flowers you don’t want in the garden. Wear gloves and goggles, don’t let it touch your other plants, it’s strong.
Thanks. I am working on that with salt and soap for perennial roots.

My raised beds had dropped down to the point where I ordered 4 yards of compost. It was gorgeous but lifeless. Heavy feeders are growing but not going crazy. I'll take an overgrown weedy jungle living in healthy soil any day. It's just too tidy for my taste due to the smaller size of plants and weeds. By this time of year I'm used to needing a machete to get through the tomatoes (OK, not really). I'm missing the usual chaos. We're calling this a rebuilding year.
I like Miracale gro, my plants love it . Alf🙂🙂🙂
Personal choice for our gardens for sure.

This is so realistic. I get burnt out every year and I always feel guilty neglecting them. But most of the time the plants take care of themselves by end of season. It also depends how hot it is.
Question, I live in Buffalo and I’m trying to figure out how to prepare my plants for winter. We get super brutal winters if you weren’t aware. A lot of my veggies and plants are in big pots. I’m getting tired of bringing them into the garage every winter. As my collection seems to grow. How do you suggest I cover them the colder months. Will they do okay outside versus in the garage? Thanks a ton! Love your content.
Also another thing to remember is your first freeze will take care of most of the weeds. But of course if they seed like crazy you will have problems the next season. If I was you Gary I would make the mulch thicker in your walkways. I tend to get it thin too in places and paying for it with a weed infestation like you lol
Thanks on the mulch tip.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just redone my area yesterday. I took a wheelbarrow of mulch with me as I pulled weeds. I then made the mulch thicker. In these areas I had weed pressure. The weather was perfect here in North Georgia yesterday. 85 degrees with no humidity 👍
Thank so so much for these videos. I'm in Maryland too! What do you spray for bugs? I'm sure you mention it somewhere and in other videos but I can't find it. I usually live and let live, but this year has been terrible and I don't want a repeat next year. I have tons of squash bugs, cuke bugs and flea beatless! I've started spraying with watered down dish soap right on the critters and it helped some but I still have such a mess. :( And you're right -- a little at a time!
I use spinosdad dust. I use peppermint oil. I use Neem oil.

Hi Gary, thank you for teaching gardeners how to not to give up. Im new to your channel and wanted your thoughts or opinions on weed barriers (the black fabric that is stapled down) are they beneficial in the garden? Do you have a preference on types of raised beds? Thank you.😊
Thanks for following. We barrier I dont use anymore. It's good for 1 year but seeds land on top of it and roots grow through it. So you still end up with weeds and then have plastic everywhere when you try and dig. If you dont put mulch and stuff on it. It is better. I like the metal beds in my garden now but they all work well. Let me know if you have questions.

When you say "Keeping up with spraying" what precisely are you using? Because your garden looks great and I would love to have *just one spray* (and hopefully organic). I have been meaning to ask this a few times because I have different sprays (organic) that I have to use in the evening aimed at specific pests/virus/bacteria. [Anybody?]
Well I have lots of videos on it. But I use hydrogen peroxide. Baking soda spray. Peppermint oil spray. An oil spray I just made a video about. But not every plants gets everything.

We understand the burnout. Kind of going through it right now. Then trying to be positive and the fall harvest. So you are getting rain, what is that? We have only gotten a bit over two inches this year. In addition to almost two months and not a day under 100. Eighty six at midnight. We do need a bit of relief!
I know weather is crazy all around. We cooled and are getting some rain. But think fall crops.

lol, i just thinned everything out tonight. everything was really overgrown.
More to get too always but I did get lots of cool crop stuff in.
My garden is what’s burned out this summer. Everything looks horrible. Even with shade cloth and partial shade from trees. Yellowed, crispy, can’t set fruit in temps this high. I won’t even try next summer. I need to yank it all out end of June and start over in September. We’re in extreme drought and endless 105+ days in central Texas.
The heat won sadly. Just not much you an do but plant around July and August.

You are retired besides UA-cam. So why do you have weeds and need help with your home garden. Sprays don't work, laziness doesn't work. Just maintain the garden and don't spray anything. Your excess fertilizer is causing your pests.
Well I dont agree with you with respect to fertilizers. Excess isn't present. Many beds are just compost. Lol and shooting and making videos takes a ton of time.

Wow. I get being burned out. As for the admitted shift away from organic, I now can't trust your success the same anymore. Disappointed.
Trust. Is honesty. 95% organic. Chemical type for emergency. Just make piles and you don't need anything else. Just being honest.
