Australian Home Video Anti Piracy Advices

- These anti-piracy messages appeared on home videos in the 1980s and 1990s in Australia. Since these were taken from ex-rental video cassettes, some audio flaws are present.
The first scroll version was prominent throughout the 1990s on all different video labels, and was designed to get its message across even during fast forwarding.
The rest are as follows:
CIC Video (1990s - silent audio)
RCA / Columbia / Hoyts (1990)
CBS Fox (1988 - Beta / VHS - grid style)
CBS Fox (1989/1990 - Beta / VHS)
CBS Fox (1991 - VHS Only)
Fox Video (1991 - VHS Only)
There are possibly others that I have not seen.

Voice Over Guy: "Have you ever bought or rented a video tape that wasn't quite right?"
Me: "Yeah. "Showgirls'!!!"
Steve Britten does the Voice over for this
I miss these old VHS tape video piracy warnings.
I remember this (the first) ad, holy shit, the memories
I had once rented ninja turtles 3 when I was young and little and had a blue spine I miss those days
If they had these cool-looking cassettes in America, that would make a difference.
1:35 Is that Ray McGregor?
UPDATE: No It's Mike Drayson.
Now, this is...wow! I never have been to Australia, but someday, I'd like to see the colored spines done here in the US on the VHS tapes we own. Too bad VHS was phased out for DVD, though.
Jacob Davis Monsters Inc was blue, Veggietales was green, Nickelodeon stuff was orange
2:15 This announcer sounds a lot like David Morrow.
If the VHS Cassette you're watching does not look like this, It's possible you're viewing a inferior pirated copy.Beta Cassettes do not have a yellow spine, Beta Programme quality is guaranteed by this polarized seal.If your cassette does not carry these guarantees of quality. Phone The Australian Film and Video Security Office. Help stop Video Pirates.
I remember a video store with photocopied covers. They claimed they did that so people wouldn't steal them...sure.
I remember that some of the Columbia RCA home video tapes were grey with red spines.
My original VHS copy of Ghostbusters looked exactly like that.
hmm.............Here in America, pirate copies are indicated just by looking at an the recording tab still attached. To combat piracy there, there are a few things to indicate genuine copies:
Disney: Blue Lid
Nickelodeon (Pre-2000): Orange tape because of the logo.
VeggieTales: Green Tape
1988 VHS of E.T.: Green Lid and tapeguards as well as hologram with the 1975 Universal logo printed.
I saw this on rental VHS tapes & rental Beta tapes
I haven't seen that CIC video warning in yonks, it gives me the same chill of mortality that the Pokemon theme song gives me if I haven't heard it in a while for some reason.
It's one of those things that I just associate with VHS in general. Now it just seems really quaint and cute that people would buy a pirated copy of something, instead of the new bunkum about "you wouldn't download a car".
3:18 is the one I remember
I wonder if Aussie copies of Ghostbusters had the red spine.
Ah wish we'd had more of those coloured VHS spines here, they rule! Nice, thank you very much!
I’m turning myself in right now.
Red spines were used for Beta cassettes in the UK
Funny that. In the mid 80's I was at a friends birthday party and we watched a copy of "E.T." on VHS, BEFORE Speilberg authorized its video release. My pal told me it was from some relative, taped off pay tv maybe. Hmm, well I'm certain that tape was gotten "civilly", hee hee! ;)
Strange, I have never seen a VHS with a coloured spine in Australia, and I have only ever seen the first warning. Too young, I suppose.
hhaha cool I remember the first one from when I was 6, it was on basically every video tape I had
To ensure you receive the best possible sound and picture quality in Video Entertainment, CBS/FOX Video have introduced a new blue spine on all VHS cassettes. If the VHS cassette you're watching does not look like this, It's possible you're viewing a inferior pirate copy. Beta cassettes do not have a blue spine. Beta programme quality is guaranteed by this polarized seal.If your cassette does not carry these guarantees of quality, Phone The Australian Film and Video Office. Help stop Video Pirates.
I saw this on Some Warner Bros Rental Tapes.
Way to give me nightmare fuel.
Relates to me especially UK 2006 FACT warning
The coloured spines are cool, my Die Hard video has the yellow spine whilst my Terminator 2 vid has the red RCA spine, despite having changed to Columbia/Tristar Home Video.
Anywho, great vid, I'm really loving some of the stuff on this channel, it brings back some fond memories but where does the CBS/FOX grid indent come from, I haven't seen that one before.
HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT OR RENTED A VIDEOTAPE THAT WASN'T QUITE RIGHT? It may have been a pirate copy, an illegal and inferiorated copy for which you paid good money.
If the VHS Cassette you're watching does not look like this, It's possible you're viewing an inferior pirated copy. All Fox Video VHS Cassettes have a coloured customized spine. Which is your guarantee of audio and video quality. If your cassette does not carry this guarantee of quality, Phone The Australian Film and Video Security Office. Help stop Video Pirates.

Man, I've lived in Australia my whole life, and none of my videos have coloured spines. I'm guessing that it didn't take off as well as they'd hoped.
Maybe you're just too young to remember them, these are from the late 80s and early 90s.
Here in the UK, we, under certain circumstances, got tapes where the tape's entire housing was colored!
Nickelodeon tapes were orange
The first 3 Pokémon movies were on yellow tapes
Monsters, Inc's tape was blue
adultmoshifan87 I've got ones with the entire housing covered, just not ones with coloured spines. I'm not sure I have many from the 80s, but most of mine would be early 90s :)
Veggie tales videos were green
Oh and madman ones were white
0:00-1:00 creeps me out right now...
I think some MCEG Virgin Vision PAL VHS releases for Australia also NZ might possibly share the piracy warning scene RCA Columbia had (since it distributes them, MCEG)
sounds like jeff wiggle
3:57 colored cousti*mized* spine
what. why is there the Konica logo in a Betamax Tape.
We never had these in usa

I dont remember the coloured spines? My parents were extremely against piracy so I doubt I was watching illegal copies. I also have some old VHS tapes and none of them have coloured spines. Was this only in certain states? Was it implemented later on?
Coloured spines were extremely common in the 80's and beyond, and it was all across Australia. They ranged in colour from red, white and yellow and many different labels had them. RCA, CBS Fox, First Release etc. Some of RCAs releases had grey cassettes with red spines. Rocvale had blue cassettes with white spines. Roadshow Home Video had light brown colour spines on their early videos from 1982 actually.
@@AussieRoadshow Thanks for the information. I will have to go through more old tapes to see if any are coloured
@@AussieRoadshow RCA/Columbia UK did it in the early days (up to about 1987). Beta cassettes had the red spine too.
Tapes later just had the hologram sticker (and even then not from all studios at all times).

Who was the voiceover artist of the first warning? 0:00 to 1:00 timecode.
Steve Britten
I think he's dead now.
@@stupendous1068 no he's alive, he's the Channel 9 voiceover guy (The Block etc)
@@shaun6230 Really? He'd be a geriatric by now.
@@stupendous1068 He'd only be in his 60s now I'd say after watching recent clips of him doing the VOs for "the block" in the "fourteen40" studio.
