Caron destroyer from hell the soviets feared her for good reason , the most combat of any naval vessel since the second war. 1200 pound of ordnance in Iraq more rounds into Beirut than battle ships crossing the artic circle in February. War ship bouncing off Russian gunships and a lot more that is still classified proud to have served aboard.
I was on the USS Yorktown CG 48 on the cruise before the black sea bump. We crossed Quadaffy's line of death with the Caron and even then the stories of her exploits were legendary
Cheesehead Mopar I was proud to serve aboard for a couple years and this cruise in particular. Although we visited Hurghada Egypt about 13 times to resupply and R&R, the friendships I made and experiences I had will be with me forever.

I was a plankowner on DD-978 but during precom I was TDY on DD-970 for a few weeks. I remember those guys got surf and turf every damn Friday!
I was there. PC2 at the time. Was on the fantail watching the missiles going off. One of the best ships I ever served on. Sixty one no waiting!
My oldest son was on the USS Caron for two tours of duty.
