  • Dug out the hopper of a vinyl liner swimming pool to install a sump system. The soil is pure clay and we wanted a way to hold and remove any ground water that might accumulate.

    Last question I promise. My groundwater starts about 3 feet below the walls and the total dig is 4 feet 8 below the walls. I have gone to 5 foot 8 and and temporarily installed and old sump pump I had. I put it in a 5 Gallon bucket with a bunck of holes drilled. It is keeping hole from filling with water even though its still muddy. Here is my question. The water coming out of the slanted walls at the 3 foot below wall mark is causing mud slides that is eroding the soil and making it impossible to shape. I keep having to add dirt back but it just slides away. Any suggestions?

      I should have mentioned my soil is pure sand, having trouble shaping it and the water coming in from the sides isn't helping.

      Don't add dirt, try using a chipped, clear stone. That will hopefully allow water to run through it without having it erode away. www.penguinpool.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Install-Auto-Cover.jpg
      You should be using this stone to fill up the bottom to get the pool to elevation along with all your backfill. Make sure to caulk your wall seams and the bead receiver to the top of the pool wall; that will also help keep the water out.

      If you have a groundwater issue, also keep your water level a little higher on your skimmer when you are fully done so that you have additional water weight in the pool. When you close your pool down (if your winters are cold), don't drain the water past the opening of your skimmer. Again, more water in the pool the better.

    Isn't it bad for your $1000 pump to run dry to prime the ground water? I assume you have about 40 feet of air in the line. What about the debris and dirt that is in the drain field, could this damage the pump?

    • @RozeskiPersonal
      @RozeskiPersonal 5 років тому

      You use either your skimmer or main drain to help prime the sump line. Once you are pulling water from the sump line, you shut off the other intakes and you only pull from your sump. The water coming through doesn't have rocks or large debris as the holes in the sump pipe are only ~ 1/2" big.

      @@RozeskiPersonal Thanks for that quick reply. I have a Hayward C7030 cartridge filter and a Hayward variable speed pump along with a 350k BTU heater. I have 2 skimmers, 2 main drains to one pipe, 3 outlets, a water slide and the drain field I am plumbing in. Any chance of getting a napkin sketch of how you would hook it all up and what valves you would buy. Using 2 inch flexible PVC. I understand if I am asking a lot here and you can't do it. Thanks.

      @@japerelectronics2568 Here is an old system from 2009 that was plumbed in with 2 skimmers, a main drain, and then a sump system. The 3-way is after the filter but could be put in prior to it if you like.

      You can use ball valves or Pentair valves like we have in the picture.

    Hi, I am having problem with ground water floating liner. I have watched sump pump video. vey helpful. installation does not show pump plubming or pump. What type of pump is being used? how does the pump turn on-off? based on ground water level or is it manual. how will install work in cold climate? NJ. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

      The plumbing line is plumbed into the pool pump that has it's own valve. There is no float or automatic sensor, it is strictly a manual operation. The water gets discharged out through a waste port that you install after the pump or via the sand filter.
      We only have a couple of pools that have issues during the cold months when the pool is closed down for the winter. For those pools, the customer has a diaphragm pump that is hooked up that can still pull the water out (manual operation again) while the system is winterized.

      @@PenguinPools Another question if you don't mind. You say the plumbing line as its own valve, which I assume is up by the pump and its a manual operation to turn on. How do you know when to turn on the sump or how often? Thanks.

      It is a little trial and error. If you get a large rain, you run the system to see how much water is pulled from under the pool before the pump loses prime. Example, if you get 1" of rain over night & you run the sump system for 5 minutes before the pump loses prime . . . there isn't much water under the pool. However, if it runs for 20+ minutes then you know there is a lot of water that you pulled from under your pool and use that as your baseline.

      @@PenguinPools where does the diaphragm pump hook up? I was wondering if I could do this and only hook line up to a separate pump. The majority of times we see ground water issues are winter and spring. Usually by swimming season the water table has dropped.

      Sump pumps are what we use. We build a little well with a skimmer lid on the low spot we designate and run drainage around the pool. Drop the pump in if needed. I will mention this is only used for pools that might have issues intermittently not a constant water problem
