The Big Chop follows 10 year old Kris on her natural hair journey of self love and acceptance. Once a die hard lover of her big afro, negative hints from her mom and teasing on the playground causes Kris to get a perm. She continues to perm her hair as an adult until one day she has had enough. She stands in the mirror and does the "big chop."

A couple of generations ago people seriously didn't know any better. I'm from the last foam-roller bangs and burns-on-top-of-your-ears-from-the-pressing-comb generation.

I'm a teacher and one of the highlights of my job now is seeing the little black girls walking around with their puffs, braids and beads. It makes me so happy that this generation of moms are letting their girls be natural.

When I was little, I let my dad tell me that I would be prettier with straight relaxed hair. I listened to him and soon began to believe it myself. About a year ago, I stopped getting relaxers and am going natural for good! My curl pattern was too pretty to perm-away!

I never even got a chance to see my natural hair as a little girl, or at least remember. I was so amazed by it when I did the Big Chop, and still amazed by the fact that I grow as a human, while it grows. It is a beautiful journey.
I grow my natural hair out a year ago and got dreads. I had perms since I could remember but I was fucking depressed. I'm a braids type of person. I couldn't deal with my alfro. It's been 9 Months with my dreads and I'm loving it

Wow this hit home, my wife cried when she cut all of her permed hair out after telling me she was going to do it for months. 7 years later her family still asks her when she is going to change her hairstyle back to "normal" wtf. 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I have so much thick curly hair. I was the only one in my family who had hair like mine and my mixed mother and grandmother did not know what to do with my hair. I grew up with so much hair trauma from hot combs, to braids, perms, whole days spent at someone's house or the shop...it wasn't until I was 26 that I had finally moved to a place I knew my natural hair would be accepted the Bay Area of California and I did my big chop after watching the Bob Marley Doc on 4/20 and I went through what I called the "Little Orphan Annie" stage similar to her hair length after her chop and when I felt my hair texture and the SOFTNESS of my beautiful curls I mean I still cry over it sometimes how I was always told my hair was nappy and difficult but they envied the volume 🙄 I'm do glad that natural hair is normalized bc us 90s kids in the Just for Me era... just forrr meee.. lol we all traumatized. I always encourage people to feel free loving their natural hair!!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!! So much AMOR to the cast and crew for this short!! I LOVED it and shoutout to the little girl!! Keep acting!! Also I'm on my 4th year of locs and tho I miss my fro at least I know I'm never going back to the creamy crack almost 10 years NATURAL ✊🏾

I’m currently in the middle of transition out of a perm.. as soon as I got it permed I went home and looked in the mirror and instantly regretted it. After that, I decided I never want a perm again❤️ I’ve been transitioning for almost a year and coming up on the 13 of August would be 1 year since I’ve been transitioning
