National Anthem CPAC 2021 - She Just Needed a Little Help

- Singing the Star Spangled can be hard. Singing acappella can be hard. I feel for this girl, might as well have some fun with it. This is all in jest, and is not a political statement.

"GIANT STEPS" absolutely killed me.
Hahahaha. That seems to be everyone's favorite part lol
This is kind of how Giant Steps has always sounded to me.
National steps
Super cool idea for a chord fill on a pedal point. Gonna have to steal that one ;)
There is a climax, for sure lol
As a former Marine Corps bandsman who cringes every time someone murders the National Anthem, I approve of this newly improvised jazz version in all of its ironic glory.
thanksss!
@Jim
WERE YOU PART OF THE PRESIDENT’S VERY OWN?!
@@biggSHNDO No. I was in a field band. I had buddies go to DC with PO and even the Pentagon, but honestly, I think I prefer a field band out in the fleet. It's still a bit of dog and pony, but you get to serve local commands and do gigs among civilians that the PO would never do.
Semper Fi, MarForPac Band 2012-2015 trumpet!
@@bryansitka9544 2nd Mar Div Band, 1987-1991. Trombone.
I can't stop watching these. The pain on the faces of musicians when they match her tone deafness is water in my thirsty land
Hahaha, it was fun to make
I’ve watched about a dozen so far. Every musician has the exact same facial expression! I love to learn about composition and music theory, so it’s amazing to see how they musically shift around with her. (I laugh my ass off the whole piece-except the multiple half- eighth- and seventeenth tone misses!or whatever indiscernible intervals they are)
😆😅😅🤣
Well the musicians weren’t sending there best to CPAC. I am sure there are some of them are very fine singers.
@@SamTheBeardGuy on ur camera, is the frame rate matching recording stream? looks like 30 fps but you recorded with 60. I could be wrong but if so get them matching and it will look smoother, could just be me, i haven't had my coffee yet.
Plot twist: she's actually a musical genius and spent months painstakingly preparing the most harmonically complex rendition of the National Anthem ever experienced by human ears. Shame on CPAC for forcing her to perform her masterpiece acappella.
she fooled us all
Stop it, Catherine! 😂😂😂
There are no "wrong notes", only substitute melodies and modified chord changes - a tribute to Dissonance, in the school of Shonberg, or Bill Evans. Brilliant and hilarious!
Thank you!
I can't belive the Republicans are one upping the Democrats by hiring Avant Garde musicians. The dems are going to have to hire Yoko Ono if they want to recover from this crushing performance.
@@Richard-jj9bj *Atonal screeching intensifies* lol
🤣🤣🤣
As long as you're roughly within equal temperament there are no wrong notes. This is extremely impressive but it's still not enjoyable (except for the memes and the joy of chords)
This reminds me of a Joke I heard about a lounge singer and her accompaniment pianist. Before walking out on stage for their nightly evening performance, the pianist pulled the singer aside for a second. “Okay, just a couple quick changes for this evening”, said the pianist. “We’re gonna start this first piece 20 beats up tempo from usual for the first 8 bars, then slowly move it back to the normal tempo. Also, take it up a half step when we get to the second repeat, and change the meter from 4/4 to 5/4 for measure 14 through 17, add a fermata at the end of 18, then take the coda a measure early and move back down a half step for the last measure’s high note.” The singer replied “What!? I can’t remember to do all of that!”. “Why not?” Said the pianist. “It’s what you did LAST night.”
😂😂😂😂😂
Wish I could save a comment
The little girl has brought out some amazing pianists on the internet! Probably was not her intention, but it was good for real artists to shine! Bravo!
hahaha thank you!
Someone did a great Rachmaninov cover too! Well done
little girl?
This should be in every music school's harmony class.
how to sidestep hahaha
I just love the “spicy jazz” face he makes when covering the worst parts
comes naturally lol
Stank face!!!
Ears still bleeding but your help did improve things.
Sometimes we all need a little help
“Mario” Cadence at the end there? All very nicely done btw!
Is that what that is? I just made something up (i think), but maybe it was stuck in my head from something.
The other play-alongs are funny but this is by far the most creative. This is why Jazz is magical.
Absolutely. Check this one out too: ua-cam.com/video/AQ-O72WMRKo/v-deo.html
Now THAT's making lemonade. Tart. But good. :)
Tart lemonade honestly is the best
@@SamTheBeardGuy I won't disagree! Really excellent job harmonizing that bowel moving rendition of The Star Mangled Banter.
I think this is the most delicious reharmonization I’ve heard yet!
Thank you!!!
It's not like he had a choice though :D
I freaking JUMPED OUT of my Chair at Giant Steps. Because this is ALREADY the Most Incredible Level of Musicianship I've seen from all the great videos out there. #1!! I may use this at my Masterclass.
hahaha, thank you!
Ha, you got 88 likes.
Pianist: "What key?"
Vocalist: "Yes."
hahahahahaha. Nailed it
Cringe
Yeah, you got me.
🤣
😭 😭 😆
Hahahaha terrified my cats sitting here listening to you. I never heard Giant Steps applied to perfectly to a situation.
Giant Steps works almost everywhere hahaha
I love this classic jazz piece, always a good one.
Hahaha, a classic
OOH, such juicy chords. This woman was, perhaps more "outside" than I thought. I never realized how progressive the CPAC is. Dude, you're brilliant.
hahaha, thanks!
Yes, evidently CPAC has taken its diversity campaign to a new level. Now they contend that "All Chords Matter."
@@mdickinson
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect intonation, establish chord extensions, insure tonal Tranquility, provide for the common entertainment, promote the general jazz harmony, and secure the Blessings of artistic Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
And of course: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all wave lengths are created equal, that they are endowed by their Performer with certain unalienable Rights."
Well done... I lost count of the modulations, but your chord choices were amazing. You're a top-notch accompanist and musician, bro.
Hahaha, thanks my man.
Best one so far. The Giant Steps insert was a stroke of genius
lol, thanks
What kills me is the fact that the timbre of the singer is pretty pleasant. Also, she really does go for it... it's just that the pitch isn't really there.. :(
nah its more like the pitch had left the building in the first few bars/measures
Yeah, i never thought of it that way, she was hand selected as the best singer they had. And she didnt hold back, not nervous at all, i love her style.
@@self4autism333 She was hand picked as the daughter of a rich donor. Probably cost her dad $100,000 to get her the gig.
I legitimately felt LESS patriotic after watching her sing that.
Hahaha. Go watch Whitney Houston's so you can back to being patriotic
That was genius! If you've got lemons, make the most artful, delicious, mile-high meringue pie out of it.
Hahaha. That's right
I've never been more amazed at someones ability to follow a singer that far all over before. You are a super G for the musical vocab.
hahaha, thanks!
Lady: Sings national anthem just- awfully
Musicians: I can Milk You
hahaha, i'll take it
Where was Charles Cornell when everyone did this tho
@@pianoraves I think Charles decided tuning the kumbaya celebrity singers back in the beginning of Pandemic Bowl 2020 was enough for him.
@@pianoraves I'm glad Charles Cornell stepped aside for this one (and also "I got maced"), since it gave so many lesser known musicians a chance to shine.
I've counted at least 9 key changes
seems like not enough lol
Don't forget the frequent strays into 4/4 time and back again! This was my first time hearing that particular innovation added to this piece.
@@mdickinson Actually, the original time signature of the piece is 6/8. The 4/4 version became popular with Whitney Houston's rendition. If you listen to the rendition that Lady Gaga gave at Biden's inauguration, it's in both 4/4 and 3/4 in a beautiful way.
@@GuyNamedSean Adam Neeley did a great breakdown and gave it a lot of props in the process.
Reminds me of Adam Neely's polychord rendition in his anthem video :Ъ Amazing!
I will take any comparison to Adam neely
Who knew that a jazz accompaniment could make this so pleasant! Awesome job! : )
Hahaha thanks
That's it I'm playing this at our candle lit dinner. I'm sure my husband will enjoy
Please do!
OMG, I need you in my church bro! If you can follow this, you would do great with the black church divas...at least they stay on one key!!!
Amazing musicianship. I watched 3 times so far. Also, Giant Steps never disappoints.
Hahaha, thanks! You're right, Giant Steps never disappoints lol
This is like when herbie hancock said “miles made my wrong note RIGHT”
haha, love it
Incredible. And that giant steps quote.
yuhhh
Was that anguish in your face while doing this or just your expression of deep commitment to the project? lol Cause if I were playing accompaniment on this I'd be in PAIN.
it was weirdly fun haha
Nice b6-b7-1 cadence, classic national anthem trick to close out a giant steps turnaround
Can never go wrong with that progression haha
When he added the giant steps towards the end.... I damb near fell out out my seat😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha, that seems to be everyone's favorite part
@@SamTheBeardGuy Worked so well I almost forgot the Trane connection. Also thematic connection with "twilight's last gleaming". Best version I've heard so far.
Yep! I died! Then I had to explain Giant Steps to my wife, by singing Giant Steps.... and she died!
Damn that's Talent... She is all over the place and your Progressions just make her sound like it was all done on purpose. Wish I had your Ear!!!
hahaha. Thanks!
And folks. That’s what all of us with music degrees are doing when we get off of work from bike delivery
hahaha, bike delivery lol
@@SamTheBeardGuy I still absolutely love this harmonizing that you did. It makes me laugh every time. Also, I finally got a a new job 😂
I'd just like you to know that I (a non-American) was just playing this song on the piano from memory, and I unintentionally played Giant Steps at the exact same moment as you, and thus realised that your version has become ingrained into my head as the 'canonical' version of the national anthem. Make of that what you will 😂
hahaha, that's awesome
Remember “All Keys Matter”
This is utterly brilliant! It sound as if someone had asked Hermeto Pascoal to reharmonize the song- in a weird way, this is a musical masterpiece
hahaha, thanks!!
I would have added a cement mixer right outside my window, plus turned on the radio and TV full blast.
Woooahh I've never heard a microtonal version and I have to say I'm impressed
hahaha, she fooled us all
Marvelous. Subscribed after this. Gotta love the good old tone-deaf anthem
haha, I feel for her. Thanks for the sub!
Holy shit. Just subscribed, just for this video (found your channel from a review). I make my living performing onstage at the piano and I am blown away. I love your understanding of jazz theory. This made my day!
thank you for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@SamTheBeardGuy Thanks for the reply! Look forward to following more of your videos. Love what you do.
You were way too nice to her.
Hahaha. Yes I could have been meaner
HILARIOUS!! But a wonderful job molding this bizarre aural outing into this score. The winced looks on his face as he plods through this are priceless! I howled!
hahaha, thank you!
Giant Steps and The National Anthem!!!!! Woah! That’s great!
Ummm.. could you like, uh... post a block diagram of the progression of key changes? I'm not sure the staff completely exposes the arc and dive of the melody.... [and if I ever sing in public again, I want you accompanying me!]
So fun - that's some beautiful piano playing too.
Hahaha, thanks!!!
Pianist: what key?
Her:..... the key of me.
Pianist: 🙃
"cool cool cool" - me
Been there, done that.
Thank you soooo much, Sam. Finally it all makes sense. :-)
In the first place, I thought she was singing in the simple chord progression M, A, G, A.... Now you revealed the next step of the trump cult: ()
Edit: yes, trump cultists would take "M" as "Em"...
This easily made my day, probably even my week.
I come back to this like, every other week.
hahaha, thanks
Okay, aside from the fact you made her sound MUCH better. Your harmonies were amazing!
thanks Nate!!
This is my favorite one! Very well masked. There's an A Cappella HARMONY one that masks even better, but they're not limited to piano notes :) bravo! cute giant steps
Thanks!
Best one you almost make it sound right
Yeah, being able to sing harmony "in the cracks" is almost like cheating. They turned a lot of her flat notes into major thirds, which are sharp in equal temperament.
The fact that you made her sound even slightly better is amazing. Mad props and beautiful playing!
Thank you!
One mans pitchy is another mans microtonal. Brilliant. Giant steps agreed.
Preach
Thank you for adding so much respect (and talent) to the national anthem again! Great work - on the piano!
Thank you very much!
The "that our flag was still there" part especially always turns my brain inside out.
This is my first time seeing this channel😂😂,, and Sirrrrrr you have an ear for days😆. I feel like your subs lowkey sleeping on how good you are. Like even your arpeggios are smooth🙆🏽♂️
Haha, thanks for watching! I've only been posting for a few weeks so strap in for the ride lol.
I’m all in!!!!!
Plot twist, she did it on purpose because she knew people would meme the CPAC 😂
Yes she fooled us all. hahaha
Impressive how you fixed it with different harmonies.
thanks for watching!
such a beautiful arrangement dude. i laughed, I cried, I was blown away
hahaha, thank you
OMG HAHAHAHAHA He did the Giant Steps hahahahaha. Whooo
!!!Dammm!!! Hahahaha
Needing to use fully altered harmony just to hold the melody. Voicings even covered a lot the flat spots. Brilliantly done.
hahaha. some of those flat spots I wish I had bended some of the notes
A kind mash up, good on ya!
You absolutely killed this. Almost made sounding to her bearable
This pianist deserves a medal!
Thelonious doesn't have shit on this girl!
That brother is nothing short of talented. He changed 🎹 keys with her every time and then the modulations so amazing. Where can I find him?
hahaha. I'm right here. On my channel. Subscribe.
OH man. That was a musical event.
that's one way to say it haha
I need an accompanist like you in my life!! That was an amazing musical journey you followed her and it sounded beautiful!!
hahaha, thank you
Bruh I’m speechless 😶, I hope they call you to play with her next year 🤣
lol, oh gosh
turning questionable music into jazz will never get old
hahaha. Truth
oh man you are beyond AWESOME!
hahaha, thanks!!!
Great rendition!
thanks!
incredible musical arrangement of an absolutely terrible vocalist, well done, this did our anthem justice!
My pleasure hahaha
You are awesome. You definitely gave her some help 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 because lord knows she was flat
hahaha, she was quite flat in some areas
@@SamTheBeardGuy lol right
Man the part around 26 sounds really cool
the d natural actually sounds pretty tasty. the rest is far too spicy for me though
A broken clock is right twice a day
hahaha, thanks for watching.
As a pianist, there are some people that I would not want to collaborate with or accompany. That being said, you sir, are a musical genius!! 👏🏽
Thank you!!
of course jazz is the genre that makes this sound good
jazz fixes everything
Hahaha this is absolutely brilliant!
thank you lol
@1:36 That giant steps had me bust out laughing thank you
hahaha, you're welcome
I mean, props to her for beginning and ending in the same key. I'm sure it was completely unintentional, but still
Hahaha, yes. Gb
You had me at Giant Steps!
Hahaha, that seems to be everyones favorite moment
This is insaaaane!!
Love it!
lol, thank you!
He understands music. This is difficult to play because she's not singing in one key.
haha, thanks
I had to comment on my phone because I broke my computer whilst smashing the subscribe button.
yo, love it haha
This was actually awesome to listen to!
thanks!
You better play that ! Some churchy cords in there !!!
haha, thanks for watching!
It really is a tribute to humanity that instead of mocking this girl you and others have chosen to raise her unfortunate, yet passionate performance to something truly beautiful. I like to think of this as a metaphor for America. She's not perfect. She sometimes hits a wrong note or two, but with a little help from her friends, she hopes to sing in harmony with her people and the rest of the world. Well done!
I knew it was. Well you had me in stitches musically but also gave me a warm feeling as you lifted her patriotic performance. Bravo!
Hahaha, it was all in fun jest. We've all had our public performance moments.
Are we sure it wasn't deliberate? It just seems so "botched" to be so truly inadvertent, if that makes sense. On the other hand we have Roseanne Barr's "rendition". Lady Gaga's pushed the edges. Neely delves into the mixed meter aspect. ua-cam.com/video/Y_GY3DB8pL4/v-deo.html
She nailed it...I mean you nailed it
haha, we both contributed
The best of about 20 of these I have watched!
thanks a ton!
Those microtonal modulations call for some Jacob Collier reharm...
He would be the perfect person to do this reharm
Bloody brilliant! Got the Coltrane reference. I think this one is the best, after this comes the male voice a capella version. 👌
Hahaha, thanks! Idk about the best lol
Priceless! Thank you, kind sir, for taking the time to figure out what keys she was singing in! If I'm not mistaken, she is a graduate of the Charles Ives school of vocal inflection at the Schoenberg conservatory of music.
Yikes haha
You did an amazing job of creating transitions that came as near as I've heard to making this palatable. Wow
thanks!
hats off !!!! brilliant
Hahaha. Thanks!
