- I was trying to come up with a way I could get a decent cassette shell print done more DIY and without paying for it to be professionally done or messing with a complicated silkscreen process. I brainstormed and came up with this. I actually think it works pretty well and I couldn't find anyone else on UA-cam who was doing it this way, so I thought make this video and if anything maybe give food-for-thought for future tape DIYers.
Lame? Cool? Have questions? Suggestions? Let me know in the comments how you feel about it. Hey look at me, I sound like a real youtube douchebag.
MATERIALS I USED
I got a 3" x 0.75" rubber stamp made for just $7.50 at: rubberstampcham...
"Jet Black" StazOn Ink Pad: amzn.to/2G2XIy1
StazOn Rubber Stamp Cleaner: amzn.to/2pEbtrT or amzn.to/2IPveWj
I found a lot of 5 white blank type-I tapes on eBay for this run: rover.ebay.com...
And if you're ever looking for a inexpensive tape deck or walkman second hand, follow my twitter account for daily deals: / tapesanddecks

RECORDS I MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO
My bands record of course NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL, Total Massacre: totaleffingmas...
The blue cassette with the superb printing The Lungs: lungslungs.ban...
The paper label cassette I showed, Toxic Boy: toxicboymusic....
-------------
THE BACKGROUND MUSIC I USED IN THIS VIDEO
was all various tracks by vaporwave artist T.O. MALL. You can hear 'em all at / t-o-mall
advert notice: the outbound links found in this description above may be "affiliated" links. This just means that for some of these links, if you were to click through and actually buy an item I recommend, I would make a couple cents on that sale as commission (and trust me, its not a lot).
There are also stamps with changeable lettering meant for stamping short phrases. They are more expensive, but they are usable to multiple projects. Custom stamp for band logo, changeable for album name, side A, side B etc.
OK, what about tips on making a Cassette J-card?
Thanks!!
This is perfect! Been looking to do a super small run and didnt want to be dropping $$$ for it, thanks for this idea
This is so cool! Your video is so inspirational!! I look forward to more videos!!!! Thanks so much!
So clever! Love it! I used to do paper labels fo my mixtape , yea it suck.
People were doing this with mixtapes in the 90s
Hey there. Is there a way to find any sheets of white letters & numbers which can be printed on a clear colored cassette shell? Thank you!😀
Dude don't beat yourself up. Your doing a fine overall job. Just keep keeping on,you'll soon be a master taper!😄😄😄
hi Thomas how do i go about getting all your albums on cassette?
What the song in the background
It's all music by T.O. MALL, I mentioned it in the description: soundcloud.com/t-o-mall
Been doing this for about a year! It works so well and looks great. They also have different colors of StazOn, I use white for the darker cassettes and black for the lighter ones!
Thanks for the tips, great video. I would recommend rather then leaving the other side of your tapes blank to record it again like they do on a cassingle. That way you don't have to rewind the tape.
Thanks for the tip! It occurred to me to do this, especially when I considered how auto-reverse will handle this tape, but then I thought about this move that the Dead Kennedys did on their 1981 tape In God We Trust, Inc.. They recorded the album on side a and left side b blank. On side b the lettering said, "Home taping is killing record industry profits! We left this side blank so you can help." I know we no longer live in a landscape where "home taping" is killing anything, but that always tickled me. I thought it would be a fun homage to do on these four. I bought a bunch of unbranded C-30 type II blanks (and some splicing stuff to shorten them) that I'll use for the next run if there ever needs to be one. Then it can have proper side a/side b play.
I would recommend building a simple wooden jig that will line your stamp up for you.
Awesome video. Please make a J card video, so we can learn how to make a nice insert for our own cassette.😄Tell your band that Cassettes are coming back fast! Esp in Pennsylvania.Alot of local bands find it cool and cheaper to get there music out.I love Cassettes.😊Also great instructer video for ur first video.Peace!
Alan Kozak dude PA is a hot spot for it! The old band I was in would hit Philly on tour and all the bands had cassettes (except for us) which made me realize they were making a comeback!
Know this video is on the older side but I would have recorded the full album on both sides. This way when the tape flips the album starts over. Better overall for the listener.
Build a woHello, build a wooden frame for the cassette, with columns where the stamp slides, without the possibility of error or deviations, check the stamp because it may be poorly manufactured or you may be missing ink in the inkwell, trial and error.
Did you ever feed the hungry cat?
Don't listen to anyone, Cassette's always hold value and are still popular.
Because now they are retro, and alot our early 2000's bands are releasing their stuff on Cassette's now.
Cd's scratch to easy. Sad but true xD
The new 2020 Boombox's you just pop in a CD, and then pop in a Blank Cassette and it records it onto the Cassette.
Preserving your CD.
Awesome video. I am looking into some DIY tape production for personal use. Ended up checking out your band. Very good album. Might end up picking up the vinyl.
Would this work on clear cassette tape cases?
Punk, casettes and dyi. All the things I love:-)
I would just duplicate side A to Side B
Great video
Laser cut a pink eraser.
What size did you make the font on your Stamp?
I need a J Card template
Love it!
Paper labels are wack
sweet going to try this for my VHS tapes thanks for sharing
So, how can I grab a cassette?
I was just at your bandcamp and you just have the vinyl.
Sound fucking great by the way!
if you cut the top part wood of the stamp and hold it in a pressdrill, then make a small jig for the cassette, i bet it would be very easy to reproduce it consistently.
hi i deal in cassette zero tapes link from tapeline i use the paper on the cassette coming away you got poor paper one thing you find it hard to re use cassette's
if you used the stamp after time people will tape over the cassette alot of my mate's used to do this j cards are good plan as well i pay 10p - 45p a cassette
i get hold of old cassettes or floor drops
I'm looking for that stamp size Nd I do not see it listed...
What kind of paper did you use to print the j label? Were u able to do that at home or did you have to go to a print shop?
hi put the stamp in a drill stand and come down with it show holder for the cassette i have done this in the past
what material do you use for the j-card
I just used some card stock I bought at an office supply store near me.
Hey I collect tapes and this is a gem! Are you selling any?
your band sounds like GBH, nice
Very very good my friend
Thanks so much for posting this!
This ink works on CDs too?
Where do you get the custom stamps made? Biggest question for me. Otherwise dope video🙏🏼
A nifty solution for branding/labeling cassette shells... It'd be cool if you had a way to index the shell (listing the track titles).
Probably worth making a little rig to hold the tape in place and a couple blocks on top so you can just slot the stamp down in the same location each time.
Actually, I'm going to build one. Maybe I'll make a video about it, will link back to yours if I do
2:28 if you want to skip al the useless blah-blah-blah
sorry, no. you’re obligated to listen to my dumb bullshit in exchange for this information.
@@thousandoaksmall1995 Hahahahahahah ❤️
Can you please make me one oh my gosh that's fuking awesome
It's typed weird so I don't get banned from the internet
Hey dude, so I have been trying to find a way to message you. Where did you get your j cards printed? I have been looking for a place to do it or how to DIY j cards. I have a few places to go to for blank tapes and cases and thought this idea was awesome! Let me know! Thanks man!!
Great Video!
I may do this for My own band (Missing Persson), but I would just stamp it and not worry about getting it perfect so that each cassette is "uniqe"
Thanks and good luck in the future!
