FIXING MY HERO ACADEMIA | Re-Animating & Color Grading

- Опубліковано 12 січ 2023
- My Hero Academia's newest season has arrived, season 6.. and let's just say some fans aren't too happy. There's moments in the show where there's a significant dip in quality, and overall at times there's frustratingly flat lighting when it should be way more dynamic. So, let's fix Boku No Hero Academia by re-animating a bit of the animation, and color grading the show!

I think a massive problem in this season is the censorship because just imagine a complete messed up shigaraki that look like a zombie diving at aizawa, man the terror
I don’t think it’s that, seasonal anime have done WAY worse it’s pretty wild lol. Plus in the same season we had Mirko lose an arm and cut off his own leg, which I feel is way more visceral personally
@@Browntable I agree with u brah imagine anime and one guy jumpin with a broken jaw it is a littlebit scary XD
@@Browntable aizawa cutting his own leg was censored by turning it into a silhouette with no detail. so yes mha s6 has heavy censorship
MHA censorship is thanks to it's tv timeslot, it cannot show very graphic scenes or gore, that's why shows like AOT, JJK and Chainsaw Man have a late night timeslots.
i think its just bad direction
0:46 holy shit that unfinished anim is actually gorgeous im so upset they werent given enough time to finish it
No seriously
It was Vincent Chansard’s cut, they literally changed it whole and Vincent Chansard don’t want to get credited for that cut
thats vincent chansard for you. Look up some more of his works they are beautful
@@Flickster0 his works are always amazing, it sometimes scares me how a single person could produce such an insane work
The static blue skies in every episode the past 6 seasons are particularly egregious since it loses atmosphere but another thing that bothers me is the static lighting. Every scene is lit the same no matter where the characters are. I remember when they infiltrated Overhaul's complex in season 4. It was so grating watching the characters run four episodes through an underground escape route that was a brightly lit as it was outside.
They had dark episodes like deku vs hero killer deku vs bakugo deku vs muscular the entire training arc in season 3 and the second half of season 6
Because It was night times, all those scenes were at night times.
Agreed, the lighting pisses me off so much because it ruins the atmosphere and setting/tone.
I pictured the paranormal liberation arc to be less than perfectly sunny outside and even if it was they could have made it more gloomy.
I also don't like MHA's texturing its literally all re-used.
Ah yes If only the villains and the heroes that chosen a rainy day go invade mabe sumtime during fall cuz for sure the invasion of Japan by a super human terrorist group is more important than how cool it looks outside
@@LuisMartinez-os7fv Your comment is making me have an anuerism, also the villains don't chose when to attack nor do the heroes, the author does. Also your comment makes zero fucking sense.
It's important to point out that Studio Bones has five sub-studios and one of them (C) is dedicated exclusively to MHA. The issue I think is that in recent years, besides several two-cour seasons (25 episodes) of the series, they've done three original feature films and several OVA episodes.
Interesting! I did not know that
That being said I still think studios shouldn’t bite off more than they can chew if it leads to projects at times looking subpar. MAPPA keeps taking on project after project but they continue to produce high quality work (because they mistreat their animators), I think in general the anime industry needs to rework how it produces the anime it makes and how it treats its staff ngl
Dedicated to milking a series they have no heart in
@@Browntable I agree with you. In the end, the decision of making so much MHA in recent years comes down to the MHA production committee (which does include Bones I think) but the key player is definitely Shueisha (the publishing company of Weekly Shonen Jump which has MHA).
@@Browntable sad truth about the anime industry is they have to
most studios barely see any revenue from projects thats why they take more projects then they can properly do and we get subpar products
@@anaveragegamer359 yeah exactly
I guessing since MHA's anime schedule is yearly, it doesn't necessarily have enough time to actually adapt the story as appropriately and richer than it can ultimately be as opposed to something like Mob where they had multiple years to produce. So it's not THAT big of a deal for me personally but the gripes and criticimsm are welcomed, plus for when it does go beyond (Plus ultra) I'm moreso impressed on this adaption becuase of its scheduling.
Stop spreading lies lol. Mob didn’t have multiple years to produce the staff worked on different projects in between seasons. It has a little under a year on production
@@AintNoWaye yes they had three years between seasons. Whereas MHA it's yearly
@@AintNoWaye You're kidding for saying Mob's production is under a year
@@Rensuke_Hero-gami THREE YEAR GAP BETWEEN SEASONS DOESNT MEAN THEY WORK ON IT DURING THOSE THREE YEARS

5:13 thank you I literally imagined the sky to be a more brutal colour to match the sad and angry vibes that are coming from the characters and the war thing too but no they had to chose the brightest colour your Brian can imagine 😭
original doesn't do emphasis as good as it want to be.
I adore MHA, especially as a manga reader and I love the work you've done to make it more dynamic and manga-accurate!
Thank you!
He actually made it less manga accurate… the sky was intended to be blue by Horikoshi so while yes, it looks better better it’s less accurate.
@@Roommates_Stories no? He only intent it to be blue in deku's 7th's quirk scene. And even so have you heard about "symbolism" and different shades of blue sky
@@mintaroum.9096no it was actually intentional for the blue sky
@@timmywoo3572 i only know that in the deku's float scene the blue sky is intentional, it doesnt state anywhere that it has to be blue sky all the time.
THIS! It’s the colors! The lighting is what made all the “dark” scenes FEEL dreadful
In my area of Twitter this video was treated like a plague. Actually really interesting and you were respectful the whole time. Definitely needed more creative liberty when it cake to this season, hopefully cour 2 delivers.
Oh really? I had no idea haha, thanks so much for watching! Yeah I hope cour 2 slaps, since a lot of it is at night it'll look better I'm sure.
@@Browntable The OP for it is insane and your edits look pretty good, I haven't tried editing scenes but maybe I should sometime. I'm excited for the second cour but since I primarily watch dub I have to wait a week for the next part of the arc, it's sooo hard 🥲
It's funny every 5 years or so, the anime fandom sees another overworked anime studio that has to downgrade the works of amazing people due to time constraints, and just goes "BAD STUDIO, THEY SHOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE ELSE"
I remember saying that the people at Toei Animation should give One Piece to Studio Bones because My Hero is so godly animated. And 5 years later it changes up again.
And don't even look that far bad. MAPPA, which are now hailed for being gods were bombarded for being a "bad studio" not even that long ago for Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1 and "The CGI looks bad (fanboy cries)" when it actually was a step up in CGI production.
mappa's cgi in aot was great. noticeable, but great imo. and about bnha, I'm too invested into the story and character development. and crying (lol). props to people who notice these smaller things, but this season is the best season yet.
All I’ve seen is people saying mappa is bad because of chainsaw man and I have no idea how they think that’s bad
@@elysteco i also do not understand, i think its just because its mostly cgi but still nonsense
@@elysteco To my PoV, it might be the way Denji, And Other Mappa Recent Animes Moves.
Like its way too smooth.
They have bad art direction, that has nothing to do with the time schedule
When people were complaining about the animation this is exactly the argument I used! The animation of the show is REALLY good, especially this season! It’s the line work and lighting that was throwing people off. I’m happy with what we got but now I want to rewatch the season with these visuals! It’s very bittersweet.
I thought this season was loved, it’s like the highest rated of the entire series, Twitter always be on something else I guess.
Nah this season isn’t universally loved but it’s widely considered a step up from the last one. Probably because of the plot kicking into high gear more than anything. And yeah Twitter going “MAPPA should take over MHA” even as a joke is so ridiculous 💀💀
@@Browntable I thought it was because it had the highest rating of the series on all the sites and stuff and the UA-cam comments of videos on crunchyroll and stuff are calling it peak and best season ever.
I mean, only people who are really complaining are those who care too much for animation quality over everything else. Of course, it could be better, but it is NOWHERE near “bad”. In fact, I’d argue that the anime has done this arc better than the manga overall aside from the visual quality and some censorship.
Twitter in sync with the real world. It's just a group of screaming people. Watch Matpat's video on it.
@@scottvgamer1163 u just said anime did better while saying visuals were bad in anime. Bruh. Aside from visuals and animations, there's nothing anime can do better than manga . Cause studio didn't change the plot of the manga. Manga did it better. Animation was the worst thing that happened to the story. The plot carried the whole anime. In other words, the manga carried the anime.
You pointing out the bright blue sky I believe is the #1 factor as to why certain moments didn't hit as hard as it could have been. We know this is supposed to be a very dramatic and dark arc, but it's contrasted with a bright, happy looking sky.
It sucks because that was entirely intentional on Horikoshi's part, it's just way easier to imagine the sky looking gloomy when it's literally gray.
Y'all the only ones pointing this out as a flaw, when this is not

Not gonna lie after and when Studio Mappa finishes all of Attack On Titan I want them to do Berserk and i don't mean just cover one or two arcs I mean that I want them to start with The Black Swordsman arc and go up to where the manga is at the moment
@@The_Blue_Otaku If they did it and focused on just that and maybe one other show then we could have the best adapted version of Berserk on our hands. I'd hate for them to pick up something like that while still juggling 3 or 4 other shows in production.
@@KamikazeWatermelon7985 Yeah that's true also if Studio Mappa makes this for real the englsh dub has to have to cast of the 1997 anime reprise their roles
My main issue with the visuals were that they looked "flat" I couldn't think of a better way to put it when I saw it. But your edits fixed all of the problems I had
isnt.. the mha art style in the anime flat anyway?

@Tony Dak Yeah Tartarus was by far my favorite episode this season as far as visual goes
@@soda-2690 definitely, although I think that could be attributed to it taking place at night, so all of the colors were more muted. Like I loved all of the scenes that took place in the lab earlier in the season because of it's darker more muted colors, it fit the tone, but then they went outside and it was back to being bright, and that's why I really like this video
Who knew adding something as simple as clouds during that jump shot would do so much for it.
the studio has the talent to do the animation the way we want, the number one reason they "fall short" to some is purely time restraints given enough time animators can add all those little details to make it next level
It’s definitely time, but it’s also what animators are available to work on it. The more talented freelancers are animating, the better it will look

My Hero hasn’t felt like it’s truly changed much each season..sure there are moments where there are corners cut. But it doesn’t feel any different.
It doesn't feel different, to you. To TONS of other people, the decline in quality can definitely be felt.
@@itsSmiv Tons of other people are also extremely nitpicking, or will hop onto the community train regardless of what’s being said. It was even stated in this video, overall it’s a pretty consistent series.
The community can’t even decide when the cut off point of when My Hero stopped being “good”. Shit ton say Season 3, the rest say Season 2, but the shared factor acrossed the board, shockingly, is that around that time the initial hype for the series was dying off…it’s almost like this happens for a bunch of series, particularly with Shonen, where something will be hyped to all hell out the gate but then peters off.
Then the remaining people still complaining, will complain any and all episodes, each and every season and off season, till the series ends. You’re there regardless it seems, so must not be that horrible of a ‘downgrade’ that you put up multiple years of your life suffering through. 🙄
Yeah
Mappa taking MHA from Bones?? NO THANKS BRUHH. That's a big NO!! Never give your ears to Mappa fanboys. Btw, your works look great.
I feel so bad for those who worked so hard to have their work simplified. great work Browntable, hope someone at Bones sees this
- Ochaco I think looks better with the color grade
- I don’t like the fade into red for the shigaraki scenes personally the faded in just doesn’t feel right. I think it would feel better if the moment you saw him the background was just red. Imo
- I really like the more added blood (dunno what the rules are for that for mha if they have a limit on how gory they can be or how much blood they can show)
- overall good work
Thank you! And good critique on the fade into red, I appreciate it!
@@Browntable the fade into red is incredible don't listen to them
the red fade looks insanely good
I absolutely loved the red fade, it was like shigaraki's aura itself changed the mood
Absolutely incredible! I agree 100% for me personally a lot of the enjoyment came from the story, the characters dialogue score and some great sequences that I doesn’t take away from that experience. But if there was one thing I’d do differently is presentation. For war sequences, you always want them to feel and look atmospheric and dreary and it is odd to have a plainly looking atmosphere when so much intensity is going on. It gives it that extra omph. Great work, and hopefully this second half of the season is presented better. It already looks pretty promising with gloomy skies and rain to occur in this half.
Damn you made it 100 times better, I feel like the sky alone made it better
I agree with the sky take but in their defense the chapter for the biggest fight’s name was “the sky was never bluer”
crazy how much changes with these changes, small things add up. and i hope they can do some definitive fixing when a final release of the series occurs, these last seasons have been rough, but with the changes you've made they just look so much more appealing
This video is actually so accurate. Studio Bones pls hire this guy.
I genuinely never thought it looked bad or noticed a dip, but yours look equally as awesome dude. I hope you do animate some stuff of your own.

@@Browntabledamn shameless
@@Browntable ayyy that's what's up.
The recent visualization of the MHA anime is interesting to me, because I do understand some points being made here that would improve the scenes more, like the Shigaraki scene which makes the atmosphere more dire, however, I feel as though there are some weird censorship/scheduling that makes it apparent that most scene will be fixed in the blu-ray, which is a theory on my part. With the CSM anime, I like the animation, but I feel more inclined to watch MHA over CSM more times, becasue I feel the anime of CSM is too muted in its colors for me and the animation while nice, something about it is not working for me, maybe due to the charcater designs that I am not too fond of, atleast for the human looking desgns. On the OP/ED talk, I dont think that is as importnant, as I think that the Ochako scene looks good without that filter, which is subjective of course, but I also understand that the unique style of the S6 OPs is something that I also want the series to look like, and with the 2nd cour being more focus on the darker atmosphere, it gives more chances to be more atmospheric. At the end of the day, I understand wanting MHA being more creative in its direction, but I feel that if the story is able to resonate with people, I think the show accomplish its goal, still I do hope for more creativity.
I’m so happy a video like this exist. To often do I see people who know little to nothing about animation claim something is bad, and just seeing my hero love in general is always a plus.
Bro that was some banger color grading on shigraki standing there that was badass
My Hero actually did this type of lighting with stain in season 2, all his scenes looked amazing when the whole background turned red. This was also done when the dabi clone was caught by aizawa. Instead of just having the clone disappear with a forest background, we have this clone disappearing while saying some menacing dialogue with the background being completely red. After the first 3 seasons they stopped doing this even though it made the villains 10x better.
Btw ice adolescence just got canceled
as an artist and a my hero fan, i REALLY love this video
i always felt like something was off with the lighting/time of day during the anime's war arc, but this video completely scratched that itch
honestly, i'd love to watch another simple video like this (or, hell, maybe a longer one that goes a bit more in-depth with the progress) for one of the other seasons; the MVA arc, maybe?
love what you do, keep up the great work!
i just hate how they make mha look so bubbly and censor lots of stuff the are in the manga, It's okay to show some blood and just be different as the anime progresses and gets more intense. i hope season 7 looks more different
You don't understand how happy it makes me to see someone actually discuss this
I was sick of criticizing this aspect of the series on twitter just for ppl to be like "who cares, mha fans always complaining" when no this is an actual problem, and seeing someone actually articulate it in a respectful and easy to understand way
I REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU DID HERE! A lot of the times I think animation directors and core staff come from purely animation backgrounds so compositing is often an afterthought or mot included at all, especially in long running works where they prioritize simplicity and decidde the look early on. You’re totally right about the fact that it’s super weird that they went so hard on compositing well for the ED but not the actual anime. Idk how the staffing works in that sector but it’s totally strange from a storyboard perspective to NOT include atmosphere and not consider the weight of the narrative. That being said, I do think that what happens is that the animation stage itself normally incomplete even before the episode’s release so they never get around to compositing and editing. The shots are probably finalized (but incomplete) the night before release.
I like your changes overall. The tone changes were super welcome but I would’ve toned down the saturation on the red background a bit to have shigaraki shine and maybe make the seem a little more natural. Dynamic background are fun but going to ham with them can break that sense of immersion when it’s not exactly clear where the abstraction stops and whose perspective we’re in. I think the shots with Aizawa work really well ‘cause we can see the injury and tell that HE’s feeling the pressure that’s exuded from the background. A little less red and a creeping vignette maybe could keep the scene more grounded in their perspective. Idk just spitballin! I’m also working on a composite for a video and this was some really awesome work to learn from!!!
I thought Season 4 was amazing! It introduced great characters like Eri and Overhaul! And the Shia Hasaiki raid is one of the greatest arcs in the show! The animation in Season 4 went hard!
here's a challenge, can you re-animate deku's fight with shigaraki ?, it was supposed to be one of the most important fights of the season and i and alot of people were disappointed at the execution, it was good in some places and not so much in others but it didn't really capture the intensity and urgency of the fight like the original manga did, so can you do that pls ?
I would, but while it wouldn't take a TON of time, it would definitely take enough time away from other videos and Interstellar Ranger Commence, and I don't wanna lose all that time on reanimating MHA y'know?
@@Browntable yeah i understand, im not asking you to reanimate the ENTIRE episode, just some parts that i and probably alot of others think need some improvement and couldve looked better but its cool
Bones is still an elite studio imo, but their flat daytime lighting on MHA has always been a weakness of theirs
Can I just say… I fcking love your final scene.
For real I definitely needed to see this glad you agree with the rest of the Fans and love the way your really going through your way to outline the potential that lies within Bones Studio looking forward to more from your channel
4:17 i love hexamendle’s art! They have such good shading
This was really interesting and I liked watching it. Thank you for making this video and understanding from both sides instead being negative and rude.
If this show was this gorgeous I wouldn’t have to edit the colours in my edits
The season has been really solid, but I feel like its pretty clear that the animation staff is not as stacked as it used to be. The animation highlights this season have usually come from the same handful of talented animators, especially in the early parts of the season. Good animators can sometimes take months to finish really lengthy and complicated pieces of animation(the types that have like 50 layers to them, with tons of stuff happening on screen), so considering the pre-production and the not as robust animation roster for the series, they only handle a few really incredible scenes at the start of the season(where pre-production tends to be strongest), before their output progressively drops off or becomes more sporadic. Norimitsu Suzuki is probably the best example of that, with him doing three major scenes in the first 5 episodes before showing up again on episode 12.
In saying that, the war was definitely really solid. I felt like episodes 9 and 12 could have been a bit more polished in terms of animation correction, but even then they still had notable stuff to them, but overall, it was a really solid first cour that I think stuck the landing for the vast majority of the important dramatic beats from the manga.(even though there are definitely areas for improvement)
One of the first anime you've ever watched 😭
Edit: Jesus... the lighting and blur seemed simple but made such a huge difference to that first clip, god damn.
Hey! I do a alot of compositing work on my series, and my main issue with a lot of compositing is its realistic lens flares, including this. Don't be afraid to draw some wierd ones that fit the show more! It really helps things feel more included
I don’t know why people are bugging the animation is good, people just want it to be movie quality. They always compare it to mappa too
1:48 First thing that came to my mind was the 2021 Shaman King adaptation. Not saying it has super epic dynamic fights in the manga, but the remake had too many slideshows. And I kinda remember it being too bright. Great work on your re-animations!
for the vigilante arc, they really need to add more grading and shadowing
THANK YOU for not dragging the hard work of these animators through the mud for the sake of rage clicks
You understand the struggle and nature of producing animation so instead of just going "HUR DUR SILLY FACE = BAD" you explains that it isn't so much the animation itself that's the issue but actually the presentation of the issue which is more of an artistic criticism than an animation one (animation is art but not all art is animation, just because someone can draw doesn't mean they can animate and vice versa because animation is more than just drawing it's understanding MOVEMENT)
I agree this show has the tendency to settle on one atmospheric scene or just one sense of style for the actual show and save the real dynamic stuff for the big moments and it can end up making the viewer feel bored or like there is no sense of realness to the world, this is something as an animation student I'm learning rn and I'm glad I saw this video instead of one from someone who hardly understand the topic just complaining for the sake of complaining about something they know nothing about
Animation is hard and time consuming, if you're gonna put others down at least understand the work the people are putting in first
Good video
absolutely cooked on this one lets GO
Great video sir 🫡The funny thing is that I genuinely think this season is the best since like season 2 or 3. The story is actually going somewhere and the action is pretty good (not as good as when Yutaka Nakamura is there, but it's still quite solid)
WOW YOU ARE AMAZING, THIS IS THE ANIMATION THAT I WANT
This comment section is so interesting, it's cool hearing everyones thoughts on the scene and what could have been added, done better, or changed
This is exactly what the show needs! I’ve been enjoying this season but knew the animation wasn’t at its fullest potential like the first seasons. Great work man
0:45 Wow, imagine if they would actually complete these shots...
Yeah, we really were robbed of this!!!
There's a great example from Recently where bleach had some great animation but when it had still frames the color grading that the director went for made all the difference.
The lighting are THE VIBES !!!!
The stuff ya’ll did to the sky alone would’ve been so much more than enough for me to see it as amazing.
This season is completely sad in comparison to its manga counterpart. The most recent op is the coloring I want, especially runaway Deku, they definitely made him look good in the op.
I stopped watching the anime at the middle of season 5. People who say it's not that bad either hadn't read the manga or have ridiculously low standards. I blame the studio for butchering what could've been a ground-breaking season, because the studio is putting speedy production(quantity) over quality. And they're obviously lower on staff now and had been probably overworking the animators with how they're releasing yearly seasons. I'd rather wait for the animators take two-three years to make a proper high-quality banger than churn out yearly shit eye-sores.
(Sorry, I'm just really pissy about how the studio handled this project and how many people are not noticing it or willing to excuse it)
biggest thing about mha animation is it’s kind of bland, nothing eye catching or new. they don’t experiment often
but thank you this really helps with learning how to make things more atmospheric
the blue sky it’s not a bones thing, a chapter of the war-arc it’s called “battle in the blue sky” or something like that
I think one of mha's biggest problems is it's vibes, it's still holding onto those wholesome wow this is a happy superhero highschool vibe with it's art direction with most things being pretty clean and it always being lit neutrally on sunny days. Whilst the later parts of the manga are fucking dark, half of the stuff is at night with heavy rain or it's just bleak. However the anime just slaps the sunny sky and neutral atmosphere from the early episodes like we haven't left the happy zone.
Your changes look so good! If you ever make a sequel for season 4 and 5 something I'd love to see different is any part of the raid on Overhaul's base. The flat lighting was more depressing than the story.
as a MHA fan for a longtime..I salute your animations..
just finding this vid in my recommendations
first off good work showing the behind the scenes stuff a lil as well comparing the base line drawn hand drawn stuff etc to the final product shows alot about the work put into it it's always a blessing to see
secondly....this is just painful to look at man- like genuinely i love mha so much and seeing bones fall so down low is just....idk what to say really this sucks i actually feel the pain in my heart rn looking at how this could've turned out vs how it turned out now.
I definitely agree about the blue sky. I feel they could have made it blue like they already did but right after Shigaraki is freed and destroys half a city, they could have made the sky very cloudy and dusty looking which would have made sense with all the rubble flying through the air.
I was really disappointed in the show that they didn't make the shot of Bakugo sacrificing himself intense enough. I felt the background should have went white/should have been a difference in score or lighting. It was much more dramatic in the manga
You’re changes remind me of the Jo-Jo adaptation where they just have a ball with color grading and shading
Jojo part 4 is genius with the use of the sky colours reflecting the mood they want you in
This is what I wanted to do but my laptop is so trash that exporting some minutes take fucking days, great to see that someone else knows the shits 😭
I’ve been thinking about how the atmosphere of the show hasn’t been working withe how much darker it’s getting, I remember seeing the new op and thinking YES THIS IS HOW THE SHOW SHOULD LOOK.
Yeah man this shit is getting dark, however the atmosphere tho, didn't match perfectly... that's why the key animators who working with this show should be experimental and critical more with colours, as this vid mentioned
I agree the show is definitely not bad in animation but the colour grading could’ve been better I love the end result of this one
I just wish the show had the balls to actually tackle the themes the Manga deals with. Instead of just ignoring them
great work here man. only real gripe i have is on the last shot you fixed it's kind of distracting how the shadow on eraser's face just appears out of nowhere. other than that perfection. keep up the good work!
For me, the major problem of my hero academia is the vibrant color. The anime is too colorful for this arc, it throws away the seriousness of the happenings. The new opening were PERFECT because they finally used less vibrant colors and a lot of grey instead. It perfectly fits the anime's situation.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO SEES IT TOO. IT HASN'T BEEN THE SAME SINCE S3!!!
Your work is amazing! ❤
We gotta share this to the character designers and animators..They can do better than that.
What I didn't like about the war arc is that the whole sky was blue the entire time which led to the background being very bright
While because the manga was in black and white the action sequence stood out and looked better
I never thought about how much the atmosphere can be changed just by a simple fact like the sky's coloring, your work is amazing!
You made it look ten times amazing wow
YESSS! when I saw the ED I was like "THAT RIGHT THERE. KEEP DOING THAT."
Odd. I remember thinking that My Hero looked a bit less professional after the pandemic started, like the art wasn’t as on point in some instances and the animation was low frame but then later in the season it felt normal again. Season 5 and especially 6 all felt pretty normal to me actually. But I DO remember someone on the animation staff expressing huge disappointment for how the animation turned out compared to what it could have been. So there’s no denying that, but I wouldn’t say it looks bad either except in select moments and only a few eps right after the pandemic. Oh, and that one episode with Mirio. Which I don’t think I’d that bad as it fits the way they were telling the story anyways but I can see people pointing out that it was basically a slide show. Now every time an anime does this, I’m like “ah saving money I see”. lol And I have become more away that each shot in a lot of anime now are literally just that. Shots. We all know they’re based off panels from the manga but sometimes it offers little more than color and music/voice acting to manga panels that are kinda sorta moving slightly just to feel like it’s not perfectly still.
Very fun and insightful video
Happy to hear ❤️
Thanks for showing this! I agree about the blue skies.
That's exactly how I feel when adjusting quality control when playing Anime and screening Manga in sync on a TV. Color grading adjacent measures, highlighting impressive moments concerns a bit of fault tolerances for repurposing debut episodes. Making fan editions seems wonderful apart from the immersed time consumption and skill level practicality harnessing potential. I like this.
I really appreciate this video from you, Browntable. I also hope My Hero gets the higher quality art and animation we've come to expect from other shonen. As things stand, the anime just simply is not competing in that department IMO but I love the story regardless :)
Holy shit dude, damn. Lighting really does affect it so MUCH. Doesnt matter if its smoother or has more frames. Color grading is so important and i just realized that
I’d hire you to do this for the blue Ray release. I’m not too educated on all this visual stuff but it’s so cool the way you did it man
Oh, I see how JoJo uses this stuff a lot for dramatic effect. Bending reality yet not distracting, but adding to the scene.
Thank you for these!!!!! I still can't digest the fact that they degrade the artist capability when it comes to animation and overall execution because of the "tight schedule". I am looking forward for 2nd cour of this season
Dreading the final battle will be brightly lit blue skies and sunlight . I miss final fights in rain and thunder.
But Damn this was great. Nice job :)
i know this video is older but the opening and ed of the second half of s6 is ideally how i want mha to look like
that was awesome as the background got redder as he got closer in the intro it was like in a game when an enemies near by but inside of 1 sliver of the screen being red to point you towards the back guy it was fucking everywhere
Honestly the manga, especially after the war arc, takes on a much rougher look that I'm worried the anime can't adapt. We saw examples of that particularly for me with the shot of Midoriyas' face when he's crying. I remember seeing that panel in the manga and feeling like it was very memorable but if I hadn't read the manga I wouldn't have even blinked twice when watching the anime. It's not like this season was bad it just wasn't that special either which is a shame cause this was one of the most impactful and memorable arcs in the manga and it just didn't feel that way for the anime, at least to me. I think part of it is that the preceding arcs were kinda butchered *cough* my villain academia *cough* but definitely the animation and direction just being average hurt the delivery of the story a lot. Like random example but I absolutely hate how the background for every episode is this flat blue sky with clouds. Like there's no depth to it and it feels painted on and plastic, not to mention there's nothing dramatic feeling about a sunny blue day 😂. Things like this ad up to create an atmosphere of... meh. Like no hate to the animators who are doing their best, I think going forward the only way this improves is by giving more time for animators and staff to work and changing the direction and maybe art to be less cartoonish and flat.
