  • In Mike Stevens’ (Kāi Tahu) whānau, taua and poua are at the heart of teaching mokopuna the mātauranga (knowledge/skills) tied to te hopu tītī (tītī harvesting).
His great great taua Big Nana was insistent the whānau continue with the harvest and using pōhā (kelp bags), and Mike’s pōua, Tiny Metzger, honoured her by keeping up both.
Mike, his māmā Barbara Metzger, and his tamariki are now continuing the traditions for the whānau, honouring Tiny, Barbara’s pāpā, and Mike’s pōua and kaiako.
For Mike, Barbara, and Mike’s tamāhine Te Haeatanui Stevens, the tradition of the harvest and all the associated mātauranga mean spending precious time together, teaching and learning, passing on whānau history, and embracing the “most culturally Māori thing” their whānau does.
    It feeds their hauora (wellbeing).
There are many things we can do to strengthen our hauora and boost the way we feel and think.
Tell us, whānau, what do you do to nourish your hauora (wellbeing)?
