  • While Space Marines, as a result of their various superhuman abilities, may be considered by some to be more than human, do these transhuman warriors lack an ability that is inherent to the rest of humanity as a whole; the ability to copulate and procreate?

One would think that if a SM could copulate successfully, that their contribution of DNA would primarily just be a match for their normal pre-augmented form. Like they get a bunch of augments installed in them, but that doesn’t actually change their DNA. That’s why they need to have specific organs installed for storing the DNA of the other organs they get installed. Otherwise surely they could just any biological material as a template to produce new marines.
Now if we were talking about a Primarch, they seem to have been engineered from scratch to have the abilities they do naturally from birth, so it makes way more sense that their genetic makeup actually consists of all the extra organs and abilities that each Primarch has.
So in theory I would say that a Primarch could theoretically have a child. However given typical Primarch Biology, I doubt that any woman could survive the pregnancy afterwards. Assuming that a primarch’s biology is even compatible with a normal human in the first place.

The point is about "lashivious activities" and "reproduction".
I suggest they could use vita wombs to gestate the baby SM after artificial insemination of the eggs of the mother with the seed of the father.
Then, follow the question "Male or Female"?

    • @r31n0ut
      @r31n0ut 7 місяців тому

either. I don't think either sex or gender is determined by dna, as evidenced by the fact that men can have daughters. If we take for granted that the augmentations 100% only work on men, that doesn't mean those men can no longer produce female children@@painlord2k

    • @Adorni

Bear in mind that, as children, the Primarchs were visibly no different than normal humans. They did, however, age very quickly, and prove themselves physically and mentally superior to their peers. So, giving birth to the child of a Primarch is perhaps not any more taxing than a normal child.
Now, actually handling the steps into naturally having the child? She’s gonna have to be on top, basically.

I always assume that the reasoning for not being sexually active is mostly because they the physical desire is suppressed by way of training, and that the marines don't really have gene alterations, just organ mutations. It would be like a human born to someone that had a heart transplant, the DNA of the new heart wouldn't change the DNA that the kid is born with

Somewhere in the OLD (early 2nd I think)fluff I remember it talking about they were CHEMICALLY neutered by the armor. If they were out of armor long enough the chemical cocktail would wear off and space marines would be capable of normal sex and relations. It was just they rarely were out of armor long enough. It seemed like it mentioned that salamanders did not just stay with their families while on nocturn but actually would have children.

I'm not much for Space Marines having a sex life, however I do believe that there could be possibly, be a very low, biological possibilities. There is a high chance for any offspring to be mutated due to all the genetic altering that an Astartes goes through. But if there is even a slight possible chance for a child to be born, it would be interesting if, by random chances, that the child is "blessed" with one of the Adeptus Astartes abilities. Such as being able to see in the dark, able to handle toxins far greater, or Emperor forbid, the ability to learn memories by eating brains.

    • @doomguy9049
      @doomguy9049 7 місяців тому +3

It could well be that despite being either totally infertile or simply mostly unable to produce viable offspring due to genetic incompatibilities, astartes are still capable of becoming physically aroused and engaging in coitus only with much less desire to do so, or much greater ability to suppress/resist their libido than a standard human man. Honestly I think that would more be fitting given their chapters are like the old medieval militant orders of the Catholic Church, where initiates would take vows of poverty, chastity etc but still physically capable of making money and making love. It would even make some sense that a chapter like the Space Wolves might be more likely to produce viable human offspring if/when they copulate due to the peculiarities of their geneseed and the unique genetic makeup of Fenrisians. Assuming a standard human female was even physically equipped to handle copulation with a 7'6", 700lbs, astartes anyway 😳😱🤔

Another thing to add to your reasons is the average age at which some Chapters recruit their new Space Marines. Last i knew, from a lore basis anyway, Space Wolves have a tendency to select their aspirants later in life. With more time given over to post-puberty normal existence, hypno indoctrination might not be as effective.
With Humanity's subconscious drive to survive, as a species, especially being on a death world, and the later start of trying to eliminate the mental drive, it would easily be a bit harder to completely eliminate the drive in the Space Wolves.

This isn't a theory, they blatantly tell you this answer in the books. Specifically the Space Wolves books. The Wolves continue to have sex if they wish. They still have all their bits, but they are unable to have children. This is by design as the Emperor made them to be a weapon, not a replacement for humanity.
In one of the Wolf books, a newly blooded battle brother walks into the hall and a veteran looks at the new guy and tells him to wait a moment. The vet looks at the new guy's face and eyes...then asks if his grandmother's name was 'x'. When the new guy looks surprised the vet smirks and just goes "I slept with your grandmother years ago... you have her eyes. You do her proud now, pup. Welcome to the brotherhood." I can only imagine the shock for the new guy in such a situation as the book follows the vet around a bit.

It seems more likely, to me, that the offspring might have an enhanced acceptance of those organs, or be born with some extra cromosones and come out destined for a brief and painful life, if they manage to even live that long. 🤔

  • @jesseberg3271

I always assumed that they were capable, but uninterested. That they lacked a sex drive, and needed another motivation to do the deed.
This would explain why the Space Wolves would be notable for their sexual exploits. The Space Wolves work really hard to keep their image up as hard fighting, hard drinking, and hard... well ya'know, warriors, because that was what Rus wanted them to be. The initial Space Wolves also had a much higher number of late life Astartes conversions, with Russ's 500 companions offering to undergo the process. These men would have brought expectations about sexual prowess that the boys who made up most Legions lacked.
On the other hand, devotees of Slaanesh have the motivation of seeking sensation and pleasing their god. An Emperor's Children Marine is probably equally excited by a new sex act and a new form of torture, because they both represent new sensations.
Finally, let me give you a hypothetical: Suppose that Guilliman had ordered his Marines to get married. Suppose he had said, "Marriage is the bedrock Macraggian society, so every Ultramarine will have a female serf assigned to him as his wife/armorer." If he had said that, then the Ultramarines, and possibly all Codex compliant Chapters, would have wives they had sex with to this day. Again, it wouldn't be because they wanted to, they don't. It wouldn't even be because they loved them, they can't really. It would be because it was their duty, and because Guilliman expected every Ultramarine to do his duty.

  • @kamaeq

Heh, they are designed to be the Emperor's warrior monks. Now why would he be so stupid as to allow one of the strongest bonds among humans to be formed? Are they capable of love? Sure. Attraction to others in a somewhat romantic or sensual manner? Sure, possibly.
Now, as for Lucas, even if the rod doesn't function, there are lots of other ways to perform in that manner without the procreative act. The trader might like being held down by a big man while usin friction against the armor.
As for a mutation? Yep, absolutely, which covers the Chaos stuff.
Heck Astartes may be rewired so killing for the Emperor gives them a "lift"...

it's probably the case that within the setting it self, it's not a absoulte that marine can or can't have sex,
the way most 40k lore is written clarity of information is not a real thing, you can't always find objective truth about things, mostly the opinion or the character or information they hear from someone else.
that being said, if i had to guess or leave it to my imagination, then i like to belive that they have the tools but don't have the software......... but in theory the software can be installed.
like say with emperor's children or other chapters that fall to slaanesh worship, it's probably the case that before the corruption, the chemical compesition in the brain prevented them but, but post corruption it changed.

But i still keep seeing that the space wolf lore found in the codexes over the years keeps getting overlooked. Its stated that they would celebrate in their great halls in true Viking fantasy style with alcohol food and women, and it's stated that they would ravish the women too. So if anyone knows if space marines can have children its the women of Fenris.

For most of the Chapters in the Imperium, I think it's a varying combination of treatments, training, and being almost constantly on campaign that keeps them from really thinking about it other than the occasional thought/private observation of something/someone beautiful. The rest who interact with mortals on a regular basis like the Salamanders, who I believe visit their families when they can, worry about it far less and are much more balanced individuals for it.
The Space Wolves just do what works best and know how to relax at the end of the day...I think we can all appreciate that.

Answering the question: unless the Space Marines are explicitly said to have been castrated, then yes, they can still copulate. Remember, Space Marines are born as humans, majority having fully functioning reproductive organs. However, there are a few reasons why we do not see Space Marine romances. Getting the obvious "it's not a romance setting" reason out first, Space Marines are conditioned via hypno-therapy to lower their "passionately hugging" drive and focus on being a living weapon. Exceptions exist like Bjorn, who even made a pass at a female Inquisitor (granted, she was born on Fenris) during the Months of Shame, but those are rare.
Plus, biologically, Space Marines are much taller and bulkier than baseline humans, so you can work out the physical implications of a Space Marine "passionately hugging" a normal human woman.

I always assumed the sexual suppression came from their mental conditioning, which would explain why chaos influenced marines wouldn’t have the same suppression (either they broke the suppression or never received it to begin with due to their more rudimentary recruitment practices) nor would chapters that don’t have as much psychological conditioning (such as the wolves who are shown to prefer storytelling and inherent instinct over hypno-training)

Despite the terminology, Space Marines are more bio-augmented than genetically augmented. They get their abilities through special organs. So, I would think that a hypotherical child of a Space Marine post-augmentation would be no more enhanced than the child of a cyborg, and only have a slight advantage in becoming one, if only for having a proven previous genetic compatibility.

I always assumed that it is possible, but they don’t do due to the indoctrination. The sterility makes sense but I would love to see a divergent chapter try it to create more aspirants. Also really curious what a “half Astartes” would look like.

  • @cogline9

I think it may also depend on what age the aspirant started undoing transformation. IIRC Lukas began his transformation in his teens. Also, I'm pretty sure that quite a few of the first Fenrisians to become Astartes were full grown adults who fought beside Leman in the days before discovery by the Emperor. Many died in the attempt but there were also man who survived.

In every meaningful sense the Astartes are a distinct gender of their own, with a universal expectation of undergoing biological transition through a regimen of hormone therapy and surgeries that make testosterone gel and titty skittles look like a multi-vitamin. Their expected social role is hugely distinct from male or female, their relationship with the reproduction of the species as a whole is nil (except perhaps as to act as the midwives of history), and their reproduction within themselves is a totally distinct phenomenon with the whole gene-seed thing. Their only accepted sexual orientation is apparently to be asexual (not celibate even, but ace). Their use of he/him pronouns (mostly 'brother' really) in Low Gothic is just about the only thing that does match up to any existing gender.
Whether they even retain their sex organs is irrelevant to the point that it isn't resolved in canon (and wouldn't really even need to be consistent between all astartes). That they even all start off as male is inconsequential. If it were clarified at some point that some of the neophytes actually started female bodied it wouldn't mean squat, they'd look the same once they go through astartes-puberty, at most with some differences in the organs that their apothecaries care least about.
Regarding that Rogue Trader, it's entirely possible for the favors Lukas refers to to be sexual in nature even if he has neither interest in sex nor any working sex organs. If there's something he has that the Trader is interested in, it could be up for trade.

Isn't there a scene where an Astartes has to attend a banquet with some aristocracy and one of the ladies there is basically throwing herself at him trying to seduce him, but he just physically can't understand what she's trying to achieve.
In my personal head-canon, the Astartes have all the right and functioning equipment, but there's just no libido. Probably stripped away by the process of becoming an Astartes, and the indoctrination they go through centres their entire worldview through the lens of war, it's many facets, although we have seen some Astartes break their conditioning through different methods.
I also think the logistics of the act would be difficult, you'd need to find a person willing/able to accommodate an Astartes, and considering how massive they are and the amount of testosterone that must get pumped into them, they're probably hung like horses.
But maybe the Emperor's Children can due to Slannesh's influence bringing everything back "online" so to speak. Another thing to consider is whether they can copulate or produce offspring, I don't think they're chemically castrated, just functionally infertile, their DNA must be so far removed from human that there isn't anything it could naturally join together with to create something new, however that's probably a question for Fabius Bile to consider.
The Space Wolves would seem the most likely loyalist legion to me because they managed to circumvent the immunity to alcohol issue pretty easy, and their whole Viking inspiration wouldn't be complete without bedding a few Fenrisian maidens here and there.
If GW introduced Astartes having children I wouldn't be opposed to it, as it wouldn't break the lore in my opinion, I mean even the Emperor had kids running around in the old lore with the Sensei, it would be interesting to see what a half human/Astartes would be like though, better than Guardsmen/Sister of Battle but weaker than pure blooded Astartes, it would be an interesting route for the lore to go in.
It's also a shame GW retconned the old half-eldar from the earlier lore, allowing humans and eldar to reproduce with each other could make for some really good storylines, especially when you consider how many humans are enslaved by the dark-eldar there could be entire factions of Eldar/Human people living in Commorragh.

For the language on the books and the general meaning of the contexts used, I always thought Astartes to be Neutered during the elevation process. Now I'm sure the devil in the details is that the amount of organ neutered surely differs depending on the chapter doing the process. Chapters like the Wolfs and the Emperor's Children probably kept the "Acting" piece intact, while the rest remove it all. What is a given is that the hormone producing glands are removed to have a full control over the growth process, they do mention removing other hormone glands for this purpose (Fabius Vile, Fulgrim novel).

    • @Nempo13

The White Scars and the Space Wolves still have sex with human women. This is canon. Both will only accept aspirants that have already gone through puberty. The Scars will even find an aspirant a woman who is willing to have sex with them if they have never had sex before to ensure they have experienced at least once in case they die. The Wolves assume anyone badass enough to become an aspirant has already had sex.
The 'wild' legions do not mutilate their genitals in any way. Other chapters tend to move the testes to be inside the body and remove the rest to make the armor just easier to design around. Neither the Wolves or Scars are willing to do this. Now, they cannot have children. This is a known fact as the Emperor made the astartes as a weapon and not a replacement for humanity.

Humans if not outright actual SM but are more agreeable to the process? Easier to make? IF they could cut down on the rejection rate their numbers would skyrocket.

Makes perfect sense that the Emperor would remove the ability for them to procreate thus having complete control over their numbers and I would not at all be surprised if he intended to get rid of them at some point just like the Thunder Warriors. Apart from that there is the question if their altered genetics could result in viable offspring and if a regular woman could carry it to term and considering the size and force of a Space Marine, could she even survive the copulation part.
Although I am sure Slaanesh or Tzeench would find a way

    • @Miron_Marnic

He would not remove the Astartes. The massacre at Mount Ararat was a shameful, and tragic event, and the Emperor didn't originally intend to kill the Cataegis. Space Marines are stable and disciplined soldiers, no need to kill them. Plus every single Primarch would immediately rebel, and there is no way that the Custodes could hold of 18 Legions.

The space marine would absolutely be discarded once they out lived there usefulness.
There is no point for a tool to have a life outside of war. So them being aloud to procreate would be viewed as a pointless distraction that a weapon should not have.
