  • The TomTom GO Premium navigation comes standard with TomTom’s navigation and traffic information but also some new features like the IFTTT (If This Then That) integration, so you can stay connected to all the things that matter in a connected world. The new TomTom navigation is a basically the 2017 lineup and a few software features are added to transform it into a 2019 model. More information: bit.ly/TomTom-Go-Premium
The new TomTom GO Premium can automatically close the garage door because of the IFTTT integration, or turn on the lights at home the moment you’re almost home. The TomTom GO Premium starts at 330 euros and for 380 euros the screen goes from 5” to 6". Those are the same prices as for the GO 5200 and 6200 when released and for that money, you receive a product lifetime worth of at least 4 map updates per year of traffic camera notifications.

What I often miss in these comparisons, is that with a seperate navigation device, you can keep your mobile dedicated for telephone or e.g. Spotify (e.g. through Car Play where availble).
For me a second plus of this is that any navigation instructions does not mute while on the phone (unless you mute it) and does not mute any radio or Spotify songs, which can get very annoying e.g. when you need to get onto an exit with an exit in 500m., 300m. now. Of course you have yet another device with you.
Also the TomTom device (and possible any other PND) is far better in windshield temperature management than any phone, which I find is the better location for looking at navigation instructions. Especially on sunny days when using your phone right behind the windshield in tends to go into 'overheat' mode quite quickly. Of course you can mount it over the vent, or next to the car entertainment system, but it's a second best location and takes your eyes of the road for far too long imho. My TomTom sits neatly snugged towards the A-Pillar which keeps it in good sight of the driver (and co-driver if need be) without obstructing the view) Even with temperatures well above 30 degrees C, the TomTom still functioned.
Lastly all these 'free' apps are only so free as you pay for it through your location data and advertisement. The moment Waze started to make suggestions in the traffic jam to stop at the Starbucks for coffee, I removed the app. Should you want to use your phone, the TomTom Go app offers most of the functionality of the device and only cost's about €20 a year.
Lastly the GO 5000 I currenlty have, allready lasts for 4,5 years and came at €260 at the time. That's ~€58 a year and excluding the value on the second hand market of about €100. TomTom now offers the Premium X at €299 including case, which is similar to the GO of 4,5 years ago. Not a bad deal.

I wish it can have a voice notification of the speed trap /speed limit so to keep us updated, and it would be nice to have that feature and be able to give you alternatives when there's an accident ahead or too much traffic, please tell me if it does have all this features

Waze has live traffic function, also takes data from Google Maps (being also owned by Google) so it takes data from alot more users. Waze also has speed limits implemented. And since there are no more roaming charges in the EU I have absolutely no issue with consuming a few MB of data every day. But my biggest issue with this TomTom device is the price. I could buy a decent phone for less and spend the rest of the money on data plans for years and use Waze or whatever you like.
Almost forgot: the best part of Waze is that it's an open platform, anyone can contribute to the map updates and the moderators are usually pretty fast.

If a product is free you are the product. Google gives nothing for free. You pay one way or the other.

when I purchased my TOmTOM some years ago, it came with lifetime map updates! Last time I tried to update it, I got a message this model no longer supported? So I now use my phone with google maps, And i found a very nice holder that prevents the phone falling out of the holding device on Amazon. My view is tomtom your days are over, well for me and my family and friends they are. Look on UA-cam and watch the video of using your phone without using data, like everything there is a work around. good luck.

What is the point to buy a gps when you need a smartphone for receive traffic HD ?
Since Tomtom had the brilliant Idea to discontinue the LIVE models, here in Canada we are having problems with live services for the remaining LIVE models.
I think they will discontinue the live services as they did in USA as well.
    Sad.

I don't see any reason to buy a dedicated device for navigation. This might be my personal experience but using free software like Google Maps and/or Waze on a device I already have makes way more sense. Amd with "polaroid glasses" I think you meant "polarizing glasses"

Nice video Martin. I have the Go 6200 and my main gripe with it is the incredible lagginess of the screen input. I do use MyDrive but there are some problems with it when connected to my Samsung Note 9. When I input addresses on the screen, or even press the Go Home icon, it can take 3-5 seconds to register a key press. The traffic and mapping functions work great, but the user interface slowness makes the satnav almost unusable at times. Does this new product have a better processor? Is the performance acceptable?
I'm thinking I just need to turn the unit off every single time I use it because over a few days' time, it just takes forever to do things onscreen.

I tried the Premium on display in local Halfords and the terrible lag of the 6200 is still alive and well . it’s really noticeable when you compare it to the speed of a high-end Garmin. But Tomtom Traffic and speed cameras trumps everything else on the market.

@@eddieconnor975 Thanks so much for your useful info. I'm wondering how these products pass through Quality Assurance with such terrible lag, especially in 2019. Would it be so difficult to use a better chipset? No one uses these devices as portable GPSs anymore, so who cares if the internal battery lasts an hour? I'd rather have a REAL processor. (P.S. I loved your reply till you brought up "trump" LOL. We need a new word in English to supplant this horrible reminder of our dictator.)

Well...over here in Australia they are changing the law state by state so you can't touch not just your phone ( apart from answering and ending a call when it's in a cradle) but also a satnav whether it's an app or dedicated unit while the engine is running...so having voice controll is paramount now...especially as my phone ( Samsung A51) has the worst satellite connection I've ever seen...and they are starting to install Smart Cameras with AI on overpasses and at traffic lights across Australia that can detect when you are using or touching a phone or satnav while driving....

Cons: Reroute is too slow. After you have missed your turn, it takes 20 - 30 seconds, thus you've driven past the new recommendation before you're next tom-tom notification.
Pros: Find alternative routes and avoid closed roads.
Pros: Find a specific business near your destination, or near your current location, or you can enter longitude & latitude coordinates.

Where TomTom wins is its navigation layout with lane indicators and exit notifications- beats Google Maps hands down
It also provides speed limits and displays your speed as well as traffic camera alerts
It is also much better at identifying traffic holdups and hazards
But the downsides are its voice instructions are poorer than google maps - its voice commands are laggy and slow and you cannot ask it to navigate to a specific business using voice commands they way you can with google.
Also if you connect to TomTom through Bluetooth you mess up the cars handsfree calling which works better.
I use both Maps through android auto and Go 6200 windscreen mounted - I wish there was a way to get them to communicate - do a voice search thru Android Auto and get it to send that to TomTom

Or just download the TomTom Go mobile app for your smart phone. It has the exact same functionality as a standalone TomTom. My only problem with TomTom is they take years and I mean years to update speed limits. Where I live a few main roads had their speed limits changed over 2 years ago and still TomTom shows the wrong one, despite myself alerting them to their map correction service. Also locations of businesses or places of interest is completely wrong 98% of the time. It should be the most superior software, it beats all the others for road closures and traffic is excellent. It’s just trying to find a business is useless.

Premium and expensive. But Google Maps is still better. You can get a phone holder and dual car charger for less than 10 Dollar on AliExpress... Share location is also pretty easy - You don't even have to touch the display. Just say ok Google. I really like the idea to make a "smart" navigating system in 2019 but in these days your phone is just better.

    • @MartijnWester
      @MartijnWester  5 років тому +1

I get both sides, and they both have some plusses and minuses, so i hope you noticed that the review is fair and honest :)
If you don't drive often or shorter distances, investing in this kind of and expensive device might not be the best. Same counts for the fact that in Google Maps your can search for example on business, which is for me a big plus, because the company name i remember, but not the street name :)
But if you drive often and long distances, or when they include a dash cam, it's worth to invest in because:
      1. The screen is matt, and thus less glare that of a telephone and is also clearly visible with Polaroid glasses on
      2. You are not dependent on the app makers for supporting your hardware, your phone doest like full sun / heat, the battery doesn’t drain and doesn’t consume your data.
      3. Offline navigation does not cost any space on your phone.
      4. Larger screen than the average phone.
      5. Free traffic info because of the included sim card if you are outside the EU zone
      6. The speaker is designed for use in the car + traffic cams notice
      7. You do not have to change devices if you change drivers in order to be able to use your phone as a co-driver

For most people google maps built into their phone is very adequate and up to date. I had a tomtom 1510. $110.00 @ Walmart. It had lifetime updates, supposedly. 2 years after I bought it. It wouldn't update anymore. Tomtom stopped due updates on certain models. Mine included! I was stuck with a worthless piece of junk. I destroyed the unit, so nobody could get any information from it & trashed it. I will never buy another TomTom device again. Planned Obsolescence!

    • @robert4you
      @robert4you 4 роки тому +1

The size of TomTom's maps get bigger and bigger. Approximately a year ago TomTom informed all users that the TomTom devices with 4 GB or less internal storage would not receive any more map updates due to the fact that the size of the maps grows very fast now.
When TomTom says "lifetime updates" it means 10 years from when the device was released. I would never ever buy a cheap TomTom device at Walmart, since they often belong to the older generations. I have a TomTom Go 850 Live, bought in 2013 and I have "Lifetime" maps to 2023...
A GPS (regardless if it's a TomTom, Garmin or any other brand) is not supposed to be used longer than 5-8 years, then it is time to upgrade and buy a new one. TomTom VIA 1510 is a low end, cheap GPS. You should always aim for a GPS in the high end range: $300 or above, not the $100 garbage. I have had TomTom GPS's since the very first TomTom Go Classic from 2004 (always the more expensive ones) and they have brought me much help and joy when driving. My next GPS will be the TomTom Go Premium X, 6 inch, $280 on sale right now here in Scandinavia, a very good price. I always recommend TomTom's (or Garmin's) more expensive models to everyone searching for a great GPS. You get what you pay for....
