Im on to my last subject which is math. Im going to have a lot of issues, I was in learning disability classes up till 9th grade, at 10th grade i got into a fight and didnt have enough credits to pass. So quit school and started working. Wonderful! And, remember, you can totally bomb the essay, score no points, and still pass by a good margin if you're a skilled reader. Think of any essay points like bonus points :)
Princess Gaming... This information is not based on one of the books. It's based on the GED testing services trainings I have taken as a teacher. They tell us exactly what students need to do to pass.
Real Life Vlogs, How long it will take you depends heavily on your reading comprehension levels and algebra skills. Many people who are strong readers pass the Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts with no study at all. If you do not pass any of those 3, the problem is probably that you are a slow reader, have a limited vocabulary, or do not understand what you read. As for the math, it too requires a good reading comprehension level because It's heavy on word problems but It's mostly an algebra test. Depending on your exposure to algebra, it could take anywhere from hours to months to master the types of math problems on the GED. If you want a better idea of how long it will take you personally, go take the GED Ready practice tests from GED.com. Your score on those will give me a very good idea of just how much studying you need to do.
Hi My name is Alex I took the first test of reasoning through language arts. I went to the test center blind not knowing if I was going to pass or not. The extended response was so confusing and just copy some sentence from the text and over I didn't have enough time at the end so I started guessing. Iv waited for my score to come in knowing its not going to be good, it says "BELOW PASSING" Now watching your video makes me more confident that I will score better on the extended response on tomorrow test.
Hi! Thanks so much for this video! I know it's about a year old 🤣 But it helped me a lot to understand how to write the GED essay!... Unfortunately i totally went blank and bombed the essay 🤦♀️ with two zeros and a one. BUT i scored high enough on the rest of the test to PASS with a 158 in RLA! I am officially DONE and finally a graduate after 12 years out of school!
@@LightandSaltLearning I felt so much better after watching your video so many times. On my practice test, I got scores of 155 for Social, Reading & Lang.... After this morning....... 160 Social and 161 Lang & Reading. Science practice test tomorrow! Feeling glad to be " over the hump". :D
Thank you for your help! You gave alot of helpful tips, I was very nervous about taking my language arts because I'm a super forgetful person, but I'm and now a little but less nervous! 🤗
I’m in a ged class. My teacher knows I’ll pass, I know I’ll pass. I’m just watching this because I’m a little nervous. My test is today. I can’t wait. 😅🤞
That's not the style of prompts that you will see on the GED. If this topic were on the GED, it would give you two articles to read, one in favor of physical education as a requirement and one against. Then your prompt would ask you to write about which of the two articles you read WAS THE BEST SUPPORTED.
Jakeya Bell It was just a lot of reading comprehension. English is my strongest subject. Most of the time I didn’t have to read the whole passage to get the answer. Honestly you’ll do fine!! I know the extra credit essay part really helped my score!!! So grateful for this video. How was the science and social studies???
Natalie Henry If you passed the language you can pass the Social Studies. You’ll be reading about Economics, geography, World History etc. Be on the look out for charts and graphs.
Thank you for uploading this video,it really helped me out.i can't afford and don't have the time to attend classes for the ged. I really appreciate your effort and again thank you very much. Ps.i have subscribed to your channel
@@LightandSaltLearning Thanks. I have a question for you, if you don't mind. Do you know exactly how the points for the extended response are weighted against the total RLA score? It looks like the essay has its own scoring system with a max of 6 points, but that seems strangely low to me. Is it really a 1:1 conversion, or is each essay point worth more than 1 point in the total score?
Hello Kate, I am a GED instructor. I have previewed many videos about how students can pass the RLA response writing; however, I have found the information and explanations in your video to be most clear. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I would like to know if you have an email address that you can share so that I can contact you? I have a few in depth questions that I would like to ask. I would also like to get your feedback on some of the issues that my students are experiencing when responding to the RLA response questions. My goal is to help students improve their writing and do exceptionally well on their overall exam.
Am I the only one that is scared to death that the world we live has a computer program that can grade this the Extended Response? I took the practice test and froze on the E.R. and left it blank. Still received a "likely to pass" but it got me thinking, how would a computer grade you.... Anyway, L. Arts is all I need to complete the GED and been putting off because of the Extended Response. After this vid I feel more prepared. Thanks
I will be taking my the language part of my GED this thursday, also my birthday. Not exactly the idea I had in mind to spend the day taking a test, but I am yet happy it will get done. Do you think it might be easier, since I hear advice that you should plan before you write, to maybe plan your essay in the box you write the essay in, and then work your way around that, editing it in your own words based on your method?? I love this video. I've watched it several times so I can remember the steps. I was just wondering if that might make it a step easier. I'm both excited and nervous. One thing that helps me have some confidence is knowing that whether I fail or pass, both are very normal. Either way, I will just celebrate the fact that I finally took it! I can try again if I have to whenever I'm able to, but I still want to try my absolute best of course! But knowing that still helps a lot!
You sure could plan it that way. Or you could plan it on your dry erase board. Do whichever you find easier. And yes, that is a very good attitude. Pass or fail, every time we take the test we get a little smarted about what's on there and what skills we need. The GED is a low stakes test in that way. I hope that calms you because the calmer you are when taking the test, the better you'll do! :)
hi, i am trying to get my GED ,and i have been working on the RLA portion of it for a long time now. i would appreciate it if you would give me some more pointers . I have been working with a lot of different materials like the common core achieve ,and other McGraw-Hill Education books. i would love to see a videos on those books.
Our pointers for RLA: 1) Read, read everyday, read everything you can get your hands on. Become a READER. 2) Practice the essay repeatedly with the prompts from the GED testing service- get feedback on your essays from an instructor who actually knows the GED 3) Be able to identify the main idea of a passage and the supporting detail 4) Be able to judge how valid a written argument is by analyzing the evidence. As far as making videos on other publisher's books, I'm afraid we can't do that due to copyright issues. However, if you give us a specific topic (such as identifying the main idea), you'll be more likely to get a video response from us. Happy learning!
Thank you sooooo much for this video.♥️ I was actually looking for something like this. I learned so many things. I’m going to take my test on September 30th And it’s my last test. I’m really hoping to get it done.
What I don’t understand is ... how do I start off my introduction? Basically what I’m saying is which ever one I pick that has the best supporting How do I start off ? Do I say in my opinion or do I say in trait one what do I do ?
I would start with the thesis. That is THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE in the whole essay. The thesis should be in the form "The Article ____________________ is best supported because ____________, ___________, and ___________." For example, "The Article 'Keep Tweens Away from Social Media' has the best argument because the evidence is specific, relevant, and reliable."
Great question. Although the skills demonstrated on the GED essay come up quite a bit in college and life (paraphrasing, summarizing, analyzing the strength of an argument, supporting your own argument with evidence, etc.), I've never seen another instance where an essay quite like the extended response comes up. Hope that answers your question!
Yes, make sure that most of the time you are "paraphrasing" the article, writing about what they said in your own words. Also make sure that you very clearly explain to the reader how each part you discuss supports your point.
Hi my name is Contressor Strickland I would love to talk about my Ged Teacher the reason why I feel she doesn’t understand me I am a Ged student I need help with my essay I was wondering if we couldn’t do a practice essay just making up topics so that I can see if I have a jiss of what you were talking about in this video.
Let me make sure I understand you, Tressor. Are you asking if we can do a video together where we practice a sample essay together with me guiding you through the process?
I have literally hundreds of GED Math videos. Try checking them out on the Crash Course where I can actually organize them and post practice worksheets. sites.google.com/view/gedmathcrashcourse/home
Nothing yet on Social Studies. Most of the social studies test is actually based on Reading Comprehension, so I always practice that with my students by reading and interpreting lots of primary documents like the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.
Ok so I’ve passed all my other test except the RLA I was wondering if there’s anymore tips you could give me writing the essay portion . I was super tense and was having a really hard time writing so much in such a short time I watched this video 5+;times truth be told I’ve never written an essay before please help me you’ve helped me come this far and I’m so close to graduating thank you for that ...
The first and most important thing is to have a really strong topic sentence that clearly answers the question in the prompt and 3 big ideas. For example, Article A makes the strongest case because it has stronger evidence, better sources, and is less biased. Or you could say Article B is best supported because it uses fact more than opinion, is more logical, and features convincing statistics.
Awesome I’ll work on that and let you know you’ve helped me so much and really wouldn’t have been able to finish without you thank you more then words can say

Yes, now that New York has switched from using the TASC test to using the GED test, you can pass without scoring any points on the essay and many do. However, I do recommend giving it a try if you aren't too nervous. Using the method in this video can easily get you a raw point or two which can be a great boost on your final score even if you aren't a great essay writer.

Gonna take my test next week after failing 3 times. Can i put my own opinions in the test? Oh and i failed cuz i didn’t know i needed to evidence from the article, thanks for help
Is the topic sentence and then intro different? When first explaining the prompt you gave out 3 different ways to go about it and then when you talk about the topic you say to only do 2 sentences and to keep it short?
The topic sentence is a part of the introductory paragraph. It us usually the LAST sentence of the intro. That being said, since the topic sentence (thesis) is the most important sentence of the entire essay, I always have students write it first. Since the body paragraphs are so much more important than the rest of the introduction, I recomend students do that next. Then, if you have time at the end, come back in and flesh out the rest of the introduction with one sentence summaries of each of the two articles you read.
@@MsCankersore Yes, that one was a rush video I did for a student who was taking their RLA the next day. I haven't made an in depth series for the essay yet but there's a great series of videos on ged.com that outline the essay in great detail if you need more depth and clarity.
Actually yours i felt provided a more clear explanation believe it or not so thank you once again. one thing im stuck on is the body. my teacher gave me a worksheet that says to write the evidence and stats to support the stronger of the two arguments but for the next paragraph to write the weakly supported argument and why its views are weak.
@@MsCankersore each body paragraph should follow this General format: First, write the topic sentence. Now I'm not talking about the topic of the whole paper like you did in the thesis in the introduction. The topic sentence is just what that one paragraph is going to be about: your first big idea. So maybe if your thesis had been, "Article A is best supported because it has a clear Central claim, more reliable evidence, and better logic" then your first big idea would be about the clear Central claim. Your first sentence in that first body paragraph should restate that first big idea. It would say something like, "Dr. Johnson's claim, that the new overpass will be harmful to our town, was clearly made." The next thing you will do is cite a piece of evidence from the text. Please remember to use your proper methods of writing about writing. Use quotes sparingly, mostly you should paraphrase, but always give credit to the author for their ideas. For example, you might say, "In the first paragraph of article A, the author minces no words but comes right out and declares, 'The overpass will be devastating to our way of life.'" Now it's time for your analysis. Don't just tell me what the author said, tell me exactly how that proves your point, in this case that a certain article makes a better argument. So you might say something like, " the authors clear decisive language leaves no room for misunderstanding him." Follow this basic outline for every piece of evidence you cite. Cite it but then analyze it. Don't forget that you can also talk about how the other article did not do that thing is clearly or as well. For example, you might say, " article B, on the other hand, was not as clear in it's claim." Then cite and analyze evidence from the other article. So basically 3 things in every body paragraph. Topic sentence, evidence from the text, your analysis of the evidence. Keep repeating the evidence, analysis until you run out of evidence for that point. Then you move on to the next body paragraph. Make sense?
@@LightandSaltLearning thanks for your reply. It does make sense but what If I cant find 3 reasons why I think article A has a stronger argument? Cant I just find one good reason and write about in my 2 body paragraphs and then write about why I thought the other article had bad arguments in my 3rd body paragraph?
@@melissasahagun5359 what a good plan. The ideal would be to think of three reasons. If not three, too. But you're right if you can only come up with one just support it really really well with lots of detail. It's good to be flexible because when put on the spot you won't always be able to come up with three reasons off the top of your head. The more evidence you give the stronger your essay will be and the higher your score
Hello could you explain how we pick the Wright answer in RLA and I can be a fast reader I need video for social studies and explain language for me thank you
The GED Testing service keeps that information very hush hush, but here's what they have made public: To simply pass a test, you need to score less than half of the questions right. The essay is weighted the same as 6 other questions, so it is very possible to pass your RLA even if you have a 0 on the essay. That being said, I recommend that you at least TRY to pick up some essay points.
@@LightandSaltLearning yea I'm gonna try to use your advise with the essay, I'm gonna take the test December 1st, I already passed science and social studies, but this rla test has got me worried.
@@jameymacqueenjameymacqueen7087 The good news: the MAIN skill on all three tests is the same, reading comprehension. The likelihood is, if you passed SS and science, you'll pass RLA too.
Taking my rla ged test tomorrow, iam very nervous. I have a really stupid question, when I take the practice test I do not know how to make break my essay up into paragraphs, when I write one, it just looks like one big paragraph. It has cut, copy, and paste on top, it that what I have to use to make my essay look presentable?
At the beginning of each paragraph, use the tab button to indent. At the end of each paragraph, press "enter" or "return" to go to the next line to start the next paragraph. :)
I'm sorry. I have newer clearer videos planned for this in the future that take this one step at a time. For now, I'd say, the MOST IMPORTANT THINGs to get written are your thesis sentence and your three body paragraphs. I would prioritize writing those, then if and only if you have time, go back and finish fleshing out an introduction and write a conclusion if you have time.
@@happychowdhury6171 If you are still confused, you may want to watch the series of videos on the essay from ProLiteracy. They give it a much more thorough explanation and go into more detail. You can find those videos on UA-cam or on the ged.com website.
Is the topic sentence a part of the Introduction, or a sentence before the Introduction. Or is it part of the Introduction?? Please explain, you got me confused. Thanks!
The topic sentence is a part of the introduction paragraph- the most important part. It's usually the final sentence, but I always write it first, since it's so important, then go back and put the attention grabbers/summary of the articles before it. Does that make sense?
I know that you can get a zero for not writing enough to fully support your point. I'm not sure what the minimum word count is; I will try to do a little research on that.
@@beauteecreationz The good news is, if you passed science and social studies, you'll probably pass language arts as well. Light & Salt Learning Thank you so much!!! I’ve been up all night doing division and fractions with my daughter and algebra with my son!!! I’m rushing to get my GED, to keep my current job...
Wait so this might be a dumb question but I can say “I” right? Or do I have to avoid using “I” and use “as we’ve seen” ? Or is that the same thing lol someone help
Good question. That is, in general, a good writing principal for most essays. It makes your writing stronger and more convincing. That being said, that is a minor polishing issue and not a huge deal. Much more important is making sure your essay DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE PROMPT, that every point you make us backed up by evidence from the text, and that you take the time to discuss how each piece of evidence supports your point.
No, you don't. You can pass the test with a zero on the RLA. Quite a few people do. However, it will make it a lot more difficult. It would be the equivalent of skipping 6 other questions.
Blake Lavender I am currently working on building my science videos. Here's the Playlist so far with more being added all the time ua-cam.com/play/PLbwRozU1LssVpMJ0LxViHXZv8dnezogOP.html
I'm not sure what you mean. The IDEAS are so much more important on the GED then your word choice. However, some of your wording is important. For example, your thesis must clearly address the prompt by saying something like, "The second article gives the strongest argument because ____________, __________, and ____________. Another example of words that matter is using transition words at the beginning of each paragraph. Those are words like "First of all", "Additionally", "Furthermore", and "Finally".
@@LightandSaltLearning it's ok I saw the video again. I was looking a differents kind words that I can use in the paragraphs. Could you please recommend me a website for exercises of reading.?

What will be the best prompt for why physical education should no longer be a requirement for graduation?
That's not the style of prompts that you will see on the GED. If this topic were on the GED, it would give you two articles to read, one in favor of physical education as a requirement and one against. Then your prompt would ask you to write about which of the two articles you read WAS THE BEST SUPPORTED.
Thank you.

Do you know exactly how the points for the extended response are weighted against the total RLA score? It looks like the essay has its own scoring system with a max of 6 points, but that seems strangely low to me. Is it really a 1:1 conversion, or is each essay point worth more than 1 point in the total score?

Awesome and thank you!! =)
hi, i am trying to get my GED ,and i have been working on the RLA portion of it for a long time now. i would appreciate it if you would give me some more pointers .

WHAT ABOUT THE THESIS STATEMENT?
So basically I start with a intro then topic then body then conclusion???
The intro paragraph contains the thesis, then body, then conclusion, yes.
Does the essay have any impact on education after the GED? I haven't seen anyone using and/or taking advantage after GED.
Very helpful thank you

Yay!!! I am so glad! Congratulations!
Light &Salt Learning The three body paragraph do i cite evidence from the text in my own words. Thank you so much have a nice day.

Without essay writing is it possible to pass GED in NYC?
Yes, now that New York has switched from using the TASC test to using the GED test, you can pass without scoring any points on the essay and many do. However, I do recommend giving it a try if you aren't too nervous. Using the method in this video can easily get you a raw point or two which can be a great boost on your final score even if you aren't a great essay writer.

Your only opinion should be about which article is best supported. DO not slip in your opinions about which side is "right".
Light & Salt Learning oh ok thanks
Thank you, took me a day to really absorb what was meant here, haha.
Johnson's claim, that the new overpass will be harmful to our town, was clearly made."
The next thing you will do is cite a piece of evidence from the text. Please remember to use your proper methods of writing about writing. Use quotes sparingly, mostly you should paraphrase, but always give credit to the author for their ideas. For example, you might say, "In the first paragraph of article A, the author minces no words but comes right out and declares, 'The overpass will be devastating to our way of life.'"
Now it's time for your analysis.
Make sense?
So I need to give 3 reasons in the introduction paragraph???
Yes, and those three reasons will be the main ideas of each of your first three body paragraphs.

Good question. That is, in general, a good writing principal for most essays. It makes your writing stronger and more convincing. That being said, that is a minor polishing issue and not a huge deal. Much more important is making sure your essay DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE PROMPT, that every point you make us backed up by evidence from the text, and that you take the time to discuss how each piece of evidence supports your point.
do you need to do extended response to pass rla? I ask because I passed GED READY without doing the response.
No, you don't. You can pass the test with a zero on the RLA. Quite a few people do. However, it will make it a lot more difficult. It would be the equivalent of skipping 6 other questions.

I bought the GED flashcards from ged.com
They have the most overwhelming questions ever.
What a kind of words do I need to use?
I'm not sure what you mean. The IDEAS are so much more important on the GED then your word choice. However, some of your wording is important. For example, your thesis must clearly address the prompt by saying something like, "The second article gives the strongest argument because ____________, __________, and ____________.
Another example of words that matter is using transition words at the beginning of each paragraph. Those are words like "First of all", "Additionally", "Furthermore", and "Finally".
