China History: Deng Xiaoping on the Taiwan Question January 5, 1979

On January 5, 1979, with eleven other reporters, I had the opportunity to meet and interview China's leader Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997). In this clip from the interview at the Great Hall of the People, I ask Vice Premier Deng about China's policy toward Taiwan and whether he would renounce the use of force in "reunification." The question - even more relevant in 2021. This video is for educational purposes only and is reconstructed from my audio tapes of the event edited together with limited video. The original uncut 1979 videotape out takes have been lost.
