Don't feel too bad. I'd argue that this video was pretty poorly constructed overall since Papasea here didn't really go into extensive reasoning for why certain starters didn't work besides type matchups and ... his own opinions on design, I guess. This would be the last video I'd ever point to if I wanted to justify a starter being bad.

@@spyroclone152 He's not wrong though; in general, Grass has the most weaknesses, and the least coverage, so it will almost always be the worst in any region that isn't full of rocks, grounds, and waters. It's more likely for a region to be full of bugs, flying, or poison types. Most regions also have similar or better grass type options in the early game, making the grass starter superfluous in most regions that it would excel in.
Fire has a similar amount of weaknesses, but generally has more type coverage (especially the dual typed starters) than grass, and most regions don't have easily obtainable fire type alternatives, so it can't be easily replaced in the regions it would excel in.
Water is just the best type in general. Few weaknesses, great coverage (since Surf + Ice Beam is so common), and even though there are many alternatives, most aren't available from the start of the game, and few of them are notably better than the water starter. He goes over most of these points, just in a more condensed format, in the video.

Disagree on the SV starters. Every type in the game is represented by either a gym, a titan, or a star base, so it's not like Gold and Silver where Chikorita has no advantages ever.
Sprigatito bodies Klawf. resists Brassius and Iono, steamrolls Kofu, and should have evolved into Meowscarada by the time you're hitting Ryme and Tulip. You don't have great matchups into the star bases though, tbf.
Quaxly, on the other hand, has terrible matchups against Brassius and Iono, and Tulip, and Ryme's Toxtricity, and depending on how far you've evolved, Kofu's Veluza and Larry's Staraptor. Grusha also has coverage on his Frosmoth and Altaria.
And Flower Trick is far better than Aqua Step.

    • @nothing51286

Yup, Quaxly is definitely the worse option. Meowscarada gets insane coverage moves, has great attack and speed for a starter, has an insane signature move in flower trick, and gets u-turn at level 24 to switch out of anything it can't handle. Quaquaval can't do any of that, and is just as weak all those scary flying types S/V has as Meowscarada is.

It's signature move Aqua Step raises it's speed while still hitting decently hard, it also gets U-Turn by TM (and as of Teal Mask, Flip Turn). And Larry's Staraptor and Kofu's Veluza is a moot point if you Tera Quaquaval, since you lose your fighting weakness. 10:00 in defence of turtwig, it gets access to stab earthquake on becoming torterra at level 32. which is incredibly early, and since it got a really good attack. it will hit like a truck. even earlier on, it gets access to razor leaf at 13, which is probably the best early to mid grass move, and it also get bite and crunch which will melt any psychic or ghost you may face.
its only real drawback is the lack of seed bomb for true stab grass move(unless you breed, which kills the point of geting it as a starter), and its atrocious speed.

Worst move pool, worst match ups to basically every major battle there has never been a starter as bad as Chikorita is in it's games and hopefully there never will be. Meganium actually has a pretty good time vs. Clair relative to the other starters, both in GSC and HGSS:
      - Out of Clair's entire team, only one Dragonair has a super-effective move against it, which could be easily covered by Light Screen before it enters the battle if you levelled it up that much (it learns it around Lv. 40). If you did (a bit much for Johto, I know, but not impossible), you only gotta worry about a stray burn/freeze
      - It's the only starter than can hit Gyarados and Kingdra for neutral damage with its STAB. Body Slam is still slightly better than Razor Leaf, but Razor Leaf does have a better crit chance (and in HGSS can ignore Gyarados' Intimidate if you didn't cancel it out through a switch), Magical Leaf in HGSS is stronger anyway and neutral Grass STAB suddenly looks better when the other 2's STAB moves only do half damage (or even worse, 1/4 damage on Kingdra). They _need_ coverage to make things easier and even that isn't a perfect solution (it doesn't help Typhlosion lost Thunder Punch as a viable option in HGSS)
      - As it resists Kingdra's strongest move (Surf/Hydro Pump), Meganium forces it to rely on either the Dragon STAB or Hyper Beam, and it can tank the former better than Feraligatr can
I can tell you from experience since it's always been the starter I picked the most in Johto, Typhlosion is the real one who got it the worst on this Gym.
Gym 7 is also very misleading, as Pryce's pokémon do have Ice moves, but _every single_ pokémon on Pryce's team is also weak to Grass. It's pretty much a race to see which one knocks the other out first, and considering Pryce's actually _weaker_ than Jasmine level-wise, chances are you'll win. Jasmine herself is a way worse matchup than Pryce, and even then it isn't a hopeless one (only starter that resists Magnemite's Thunderbolts and can still hit Steelix for full damage through its weaker Sp. Def), just a worse time than the other 2 starters.

    • @IAmMissingnoMaster

Gyms 1 and 2: only their aces are a threat to Grass-types, and neither of them appreciate Reflect, so Chikorita is in a good position to support the rest of the team.
Gym 6: If you mean Jasmine, Bayleef resists Magnemite's Thunderbolt, and her ace, Steelix, is her only mon not resistant to Grass. Razor Leaf targets its lower Sp. Def, and it won't appreciate Reflect.
Gym 7: Pryce is a joke as an Ice-type specialist. You can _sweep_ him with Bayleef. Yes, speaking from personal experience.
Gym 8: I would argue Meganium could help against her ace. Resists Surf, Reflect helps with Hyper Beam, Poison Powder to burn through those Full Heals and get in some chip damage, and it doesn't resist Grass.
      Fair on the rest.

But in gen 1 Charmander is weak to the first 2 gyms and it's secondary flying typing only really hurts it, where as I swear I think the main reason Bulbasaur is so good is because of the secondary poison type covering a lot of grass's usual weaknesses. It could just be my bad battling skills that make it look bad, though.

You stopped too early when selling how badly Chespin has the deck stacked against it in X/Y.
Around the fifth gym, it'll have evolved into Chesnaught. So it'll likely get STAB against Heliolisk and Magneton while getting a lot weaker against Emolga.
Then, the next two gyms? Fairy and Psychic, perfect to punish you for your newly gained fighting STAB. The legendaries (which you have to fight/catch) are also fairy or flying, meaning brutal STAB against you. At least you are great against Lysandre's Mega Gyarados.
The elite four - you'll stomp Siebold. But one's Drasna, whose dragons and flyings will resist you, Pachira will destroy you, and Wikstrom's steels? One's Scizor, a bug/steel, one's Aegislash, steel/ghost and one's Klefki, steel/fairy. It's insane how a steel type trainer isn't a free fight for a fighting type.
Diantha... got a Hawlucha (murders you), a Pampujin (resists you harshly), an Aurorus (can murder you back), a Mega Gardevoir (murders you) and Goodra (resist grass and can fire blast you). Tyrantrum, in difference to the fight with Grant, is now more of a freebie because of fighting unambiguously besting rock.
It's honestly crazy how Kalos vs. Chesnaught might rival Johto vs. Chikorita in how absolutely stacked it is against you.

Bulba is great competitively, but personally, as a casual play through, it drags and kinda replies on a glitch as its main gimmick. I dont see a reason to really have a grass type with 2 other grass/poison types to choose from

I have a new theory that Bulbasaur was among a large list of Kanto’s Poison-Types who had the type added on after their primary type for the sake of “game balance” (notice the air quotes). Not only would this improve Bulbasaur’s Gym matchups against Giovanni and especially Sabrina if they were pure Grass-Types, but the same can also be said for the Bellsprout and Oddish families who we have at least some evidence to suggest were some of the last Pokémon added to Gen 1 outside of Mew. They even gave Misty’s Psyduck Confusion in Let’s Go as an added bonus.
In the meantime, here’s my picks for every region using their base forms (assuming no remakes):
Kanto: Charmander is the obvious pick, but it’s honestly pretty even as Squirtle has the worst mid game and Bulbasaur has the worst lategame
Johto: Chikorita is the obvious pick, but recently I’ve started think Gen 2 Totodile specifically is pretty overrated too, and is only as famous as it is because of Rage strats in speedruns (Gen 2 Rage is so broken it could make anything the best by default)
Hoenn: Treecko is the obvious pick, but similar to Gen 2, Torchic suffers from a lack of physical STAB on one of its types (and no Speed Boost lol)
Sinnoh: The fact that your worst fully evolved choice is a Torterra says a lot about how stacked this region’s choices actually are (at least it’s the only one that beats Volkner)
Unova: Snivy and Oshawott tie for me here because of their lack of a secondary Type; which one is worse depends on if you’re playing the originals (Oshawott) or the sequels (Snivy). Note that BW1 are one of the very few games where Surf isn’t required to beat the game
Kalos: Fennekin is my pick for the worst choice, though to be fair it does get screwed over by a significantly buffed Charizard later on as competition for the Fire-Type slot. Oh btw Squirtle is the worst Kanto starter here if you’re wondering
Alola: Litten is only the worst in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, since Flying-Types across the board got a massive buff in these games with the early Flyinium Z and the Roost TM, thus meaning Rowlet is only the worst in the base games
Galar: Sobble isn’t terrible at face value, but when your competition consists of Grookey and Scorbunny, especially if you have the DLC and can get their Hidden Abilities, these Water-Types don’t age nearly as well as the other two especially for the first three Gyms
I’m not picking for Hisui and Paldea; the former is barely focused on battles and the latter is an open-world game

12:24 I'd only put Tepig as the worst because it's unable to use Cut, but even then, that's not too bad.

I feel the pain on losing the Ruby version. And for that, I mean legitimately losing in the game lol. Where I left off, I remember wandering around an obscure route where my Swampert was poisoned to hell and I didn’t want to faint and lose all my money. And as a perfectionist 9 year old afraid of failure…I refused to play it after that lol. But now it’s 20 years later, my sister found the original cartridges in her storage basement, and the cartridge is dead. Once we replace the battery in it though, I want redemption!! Haha

Am I the only one who doesn’t care at all about a starter hitting the first or second gen for super effective? They’re going to be so easy regardless

Charmeleon vs Misty gym isn't exactly easy without overleveling
