I’m a huge Robert Alter fan and have been following his Old Testament releases for almost 20 years back when I was in Jr. High. His translation of Judges and Samuel are incredible. I saw this complete set at Target recently and really want it.
Alter's masterpiece is translating in order to capture the bible as literature not necessarily with theology being the first and foremost consideration. It is excellent for what it's trying to do. I wouldn't necessarily use it for personal devotion. It is good academically focused scholarship.
Alter’s heart language is Hebrew so he is a language machine / time traveler so to speak, one who sees idiom and genius in the page of the Bible where dummies like myself just mindlessly wander blind folded. Regardless of his theology, his observations on the language of the Bible are unique. Brothers where did you find this price? I can’t find that price!

Yeah, that's something to stop and think about. If he is a non-believer, can we really trust what he wrote? The majority says, Don't worry about it. I want to be part of the remnant, not the majority.

It reads: "For the curs came all around me, a pack of the evil encircled me, they bound my hands and feet." The note on this translation reads: "They bound my hands and feet. The received Hebrew text -- literally "like a lion my hands and feet" -- makes no sense. The translation adopts one proposed emendation -- reading karkhu, "they bound," for ka'ari, "like a lion" -- though there is admittedly no ancient textual warrant for this reading." ___ I don't think this translation is anti-Christian, but it's definitely not a Christian translation and it doesn't pretend to be. I think its straightforwardness is one of its strengths: Robert Alter is very transparent in how he makes his translation decisions and as we saw in the note for Psalm 22:16 he admits when he's making a leap.
The Psalms were written long before Christianity was formed. So the question, Is this commentary anti-Christian? The answer is, no. The commentary is rich with literary insights and ancient near east history. The doctrine of the church will be questioned as you read these books. Robert Alter is not a Sunday school teacher, so don't expect Sunday school answers.

Im thinking about buying this one! It seems so wierd to buy a bible printed in a country that persecutes Christian's and Uyghurs.
