    I was always a fan of Zimmer but hadn't followed him in detail the last several years. Probably nothing will get me excited about the team's prospects until they actually win a divisional playoff game, but your analysis gives me assurance this was a quality hire and not just Jerry choosing a name/old friend. Thank you for another good in depth breakdown.

    I think DC Zimmer will be a step forward. In football as in business your worse enemy is becoming predictable. Being aggressive and adapting on the fly is something you must be prepared to do in today's offensive hybrid schemes. One of the things I didn't like was Quinn did not blitz nearly enough. And for goodness sake no more prevent!! Thank you my friend for another great instructional video. God bless you.

      Good post! Steve Spagnuolo Chiefs blitzed the 49ers like crazy in the Super Bowl and it worked out! What's interesting is Zimmer and Steve Spagnuolo run similar double a-gap mug concepts. Spagnuolo used this same defense to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl when he was with the Giants. Zimmer, Spagnuolo, and the late Jim Johnson's defense were built for the West Coast offense and timing routes. This is a defense that's built for Shanahan-style offenses. Of course over the years concepts and variations have changed to deal with all of the presnap motions like, jet motions, orbit motions, and shuffle motions. But at the end of the day this defense has had success against different types of west coast offenses and the Shanahan tree.

    I knew this too, Zimmer defenses IMO are too conservative and predictable, especially in high stakes situations . One of the primary criticisms of Zimmer’s approach has been his reliance on traditional, heavy-blitz schemes and a preference for man coverage. This can sometimes leave his defense vulnerable to dynamic, mobile quarterbacks who can extend plays or exploit mismatches in coverage. His systems demand a lot from cornerbacks, requiring not only physical prowess but also exceptional skills in one-on-one situations, which can be a double-edged sword against teams with multiple receiving threats.
    Zimmer’s defensive philosophy sometimes struggles with adaptability His defenses have been known to falter against teams that can effectively mix up their play-calling, utilizing quick passes, misdirection, and tempo to keep the defense off balance
    Zimmer’s defensive schemes often require specific types of personnel to execute effectively, particularly elite cornerbacks and pass rushers. This heavy reliance on high-caliber talent in certain positions can strain roster construction and salary cap management, making it challenging to maintain a balanced team. If the necessary pieces aren’t in place, his system can struggle to achieve its full potential, leading to periods of underperformance.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  7 місяців тому +1

      I can see you are knowledgeable about the subject, which I respect! You wrote quite a bit for me to deal with everything. But there is one thing you wrote in your post that will answer everything: 'Zimmer's scheme often requires specific types of personnel to execute effectively, particularly elite cornerbacks and pass rushers.' Well, based on your own observations, Zimmer walked into a gold field coming to Dallas. Three All-Pro cornerbacks, an All-Pro edge rusher in Parsons, and one of the best 3-techs in the league in Osa Odighizuwa. This is the best roster he has ever come to, other than the 90s Cowboys. The Vikings' roster with Harrison and those guys had to be built.

    MY "TAKE" on what the Cowboys are doing is I'm going to "TAKE" a "WAIT" AND "SEE" approach to EVERYTHING and EVERY MOVE they make this off-season.
    I wasn't "AGAINST" the Zimmer hiring - it was the "PREDICTABLE" MOVE the Jones' make. Hiring Belicheck or Ryan would've been the "UNPREDICTABLE" MOVE to make - but I wasn't "BLOWN AWAY" by it, either.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  7 місяців тому +2

      I gotta admit my dad and I had this conversation. That's what I thought. It was the safe pick. Which did make me question if the Jones were all in. But in saying that, I'm a fan of Zimmer. I always have been. I was wrong about Quinn. I thought he was better at in-game adjustments. Hopefully I'm not wrong this time. Thanks, bro!

      @thelogicalcowboy
      You're welcome.
      Yeah, I have to admit, Jerry's, "I'M GOING ALL IN" talk made me kind of CRINGE. Like I said, I'LL "BELIEVE IT" WHEN I "SEE IT."
      Also, like I said, I wasn't against the Zimmer hire, but my thing is - and this goes for any hire, both offense and defense - does Zimmer, being a "OLDER / OLD SCHOOL COACH" have anything "NEW" to combat what "MODERN" NFL offenses are doing? I don't want to say "STOP" or "SHUT DOWN" "MODERN" NFL offenses, 'cause the league is obviously doing everything to promote offense and make it easier for offenses.
      When was the last time the NFL passed a rule that benefits defenses?
      As far as DQ goes, yeah, he REFUSED to make any IN-GAME adjustments or adjust his defense - AT ALL, so I wasn't sorry to see him go.
      It's like NFL offenses went to a "PASSING LEAGUE" and he countered with using 215 lb., etc, SAFETIES as LB's, who can cover the pass better, but left the defense EXPOSED to RUNNING GAMES, like NFL offenses weren't ever going to RUN again.
      After that early season Cardinals game, he should've "LEARNED" and "ADJUSTED", but he didn't.
      Let's "HOPE" and "SEE" if Zimmer has some "NEW TRICKS" up his sleeves.
      He's going to need them.

      I told a lot of Cowboys fans - who didn't agree with me AT ALL - when Dallas was BLOWING OUT teams like the New York, Washington, and New England - minus a IN HIS "PRIME" Tom Brady like QB - Dallas' defense is GREAT at the TWO THINGS that AREN'T "SUSTAINABLE":
      1.) PASS-RUSH.
      2.)TURNOVERS.
      NO TEAM can go into every game thinking they're going to get 4 - 5 sacks and 4 - 5 turnovers, etc, a game, not to mention, PICK 6's.
      You want to "NEGATE" a teams PASS-RUSH just RUN THE BALL MORE and when they do pass, get rid of the ball FAST "BEFORE" the PASS-RUSH can get there.
      EVERY GAME Dallas "LOST" this year had the SAME THINGS IN COMMON, defensively speaking:
      WEAK or NO PASS-RUSH, NO or LITTLE TURNOVERS, and got RAN ALL OVER, especially late in the game (like the Buffalo game) when it mattered.
      Zimmer's defenses are going to have to do better, a whole lot better at the "LITTLE THINGS" DQ's defenses weren't, while keeping - and improving the PASS-RUSH and TURNOVERS.

      @@thelogicalcowboy Rex Ryan criticized Quinn on "Get up" for the same thing.
      I recall the opening game of the 1985 season, Washington at Dallas. The game opened with Washington with the ball. Washington ran Riggins left three straight times, picking up maybe 20 yards and a first down.
      Landry called a time out. The Dallas D made adjustments to whatever "wrinkle" Washington was throwing at them, and STUFFED subsequent run plays to that side. That set the tone for the game, which Dallas won 44-14. Don't just sit there and wait until halftime to let the other team move up and down the field at will, do something about it!--that was Rex's observation.

    The defense has been the weak link for the past few seasons. There's no way that the Cowboys are going to make a serious run at the Super Bowl without a better defense. It makes me realize just how good the Doomsday Defense was back then. That defense along with the Steelers Steel Curtain were some of the best in league history and they did that by running simple schemes and formations.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  7 місяців тому +2

      Absolutely. Keep in mind Zimmer was a high profiled name coming from college. Getting Zimmer was actually a steal. Before Zimmer In 1993 Dallas passing defense was 11th. In 94 during Zimmer's first season as the defensive backs assistant Coach they went from eleven to number one in passing defense. From 1994-1997 they had 3 top 2 passing defenses in 4 seasons. So his presence made an immediate impact on the passing game in Dallas that helped them win the superbowl.

    Another great video giving some excellent insight into Zimmer’s philosophical defense. I am guessing Zimmer’s defense might give up big plays from here to there, especially if their opponent has a speedy receiver like Tyreek Hill, or it would be quite vulnerable against a team like the Cowboys of their dynasty years. Once Emmitt would break through the line behind Erik Williams and Moose Johnston, then he would be off to the races. I know he coached under and is still very to close to Bill Parcells, and his philosophy differs from Tuna’s . But, I like Parcells’ philosophy because he had the personnel for it, just like what he was doing in Dallas. His 3-4 scheme would have two oversized defensive ends and a solid nose tackle each take on double teams to allow four very fast, aggressive, hungry quick linebackers make the plays. Micah Parsons would be an outside linebacker and would be by now the scariest defensive player in the league. Quinn’s scheme had two huge problems. It doesn’t work for a team whose offense throws the ball too often and doesn’t run the ball much. This means that the undersized defense is playing too many snaps through the course of the season, and wearing down by the time the playoffs begin. And the other problem is that with a safety playing middle linebacker in a 4-3, the team cannot stop the run. Zimmer likes the 4-3, but if he is going to run it, then he is going to need a beast of a middle linebacker to play that position. He will also need defensive tackles that each can take on double team blocks. Offenses will still block Tank and Micah, but with two guys coming in the “A” gaps and two defensive backs lined up outside of Micah and Tank, I would run in the “3” hole by having my left tackle block Parsons out while having my left guard block the right defensive tackle in, and having my blocking back fill the hole as a lead blocker for my running back. That would be very difficult to stop. I would like to see Dallas either, not both because I am no fan of the hybrid defense, to run a 3-4 because they can much more easily grab oversized defensive ends and a very strong nose tackle to take on double teams. I would then like for them to put Parsons back at linebacker, put Sam Williams back at linebacker and then bring in another very aggressive linebacker. Let the linebackers make the plays. But, since Zimmer likes the 4-3, the Cowboys need a stellar defensive tackle, which they have not had in years. They will then need a real linebacker play in the middle. And either way, the offense needs three good run blockers in the interior of that OL, and they will need a power back. They need to run the football to alleviate the stress of the defense, and that’s the only way to do it.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  7 місяців тому +2

      First of all great post! That is a fear that I have with Zimmer. I looked up his rush defensive rank since his days with the Vikings. I was surprised. Zimmer's track record with defense rankings in rushing yards is not as impressive as some may think. Only one of his defenses ranked in the top 10 from 2015 to 2021, while Quinn has achieved this twice since 2014. Which isn't good either. Although Zimmer had success with the Bengals and his first stint with Dallas in run stop defenss, his recent performance with Minnesota is a concern. We need to improve our rushing defense if we want to compete with teams like the Packers and the 49ers. Hopefully Zimmer can pull if off.

Im guessing he played a 6 DB zone against Greenbay because that Shanahan offence has pre snap motion and creates match up problems with DB's and LB's. But you know i heard that one factor that made GB sucessful against Dallas was a simple one..
