Best review out for Traktor Kontrol S8. Shiftee is sick on Traktor Kontrol S8 locked in the storage unit. I like the unit. Don't need any more questions.
Awesome review as always bro. I really like the remix functionality of it, really gives you full control. It will be weird without a jog wheel but you'll probably get used to it.
So I use this with turntables. I spin open format so I'm constantly going between EDM and hip-hip tracks. I like this with hip-hop because I can add beats (via remix decks) in to tracks. Also, with the remix decks and adjusting the master tempo you can create some great live transitions from EDM to hip-hop. I also will chop up an acapella and loop it to create custom 'hype' either for BPM transition or song/genre transition. As for the timecode integration, it's pretty seemless. Just plug in the turntable, drop the needle on the timecode vinyl, and the S8 will allow you to control the track via turntables. As for the issue with popping and dual-core, I have yet to experience an issue with it. Again, you can use this with other genres than EDM, but you need to beatgrid the tracks first if you want to let Traktor track beats for mixing and effects.
Cool explanation, but show me a demo video of you (or anyone) using the S8 with Remix Decks and hip hop... I haven't really seen anything like that yet. NI would probably pay someone lovely to do a hip-hop Demo on the S8 with Remix decks...
Love your reviews, thanks for doing this one! Was wondering about mixing unquantized music with the S8. Haven't seen any turntablists using it, and suspected the size might be an issue.
So the controller should light up when the power is turned on, because my friends wont. But it will play plugged in Turntables nothing else lights up. Is that a problem with controller or hes no doing something correct
When you say "full in depth review" you certainly mean it! One thing i think of when i see it is that there's no buttons next to the cross fader which would indicate it's made for scratching, right? I've learned that watching either your videos or ... that guy i obviously can't remember the name of right now ^_^ I think one of the really good things with this is when making music and mix stuff live or just find inspiration using it as an APC for Live/Bitwig. You have plenty of faders and knobs and ... if i were to get one i absolutely would use it that way.
Yes, I tried to break it down to the fullest for you guys. It's not really a scratching style controller, but you can certainly scratch with it if you plug in other decks.
Great Tutorial. However, I do have one simple question. You said that the S8 is not made for beat matching manually. But let's say I'm playing a top 40 sports bars for whatever reason with lots of songs that have different tempos. Is it still easy and possible to simply "hard cut" into a song you have cued up in a different deck using a set cue point on the track you are trying to drop in? Not attempting to beat match and mix them but simply transition from the end of one song into another seamlessly and easy? from the looks of it i'm sure you can do so. Some times it's the little things you know. And to add to that you can still totally manually adjust the tempo of one song to fit the song playing live before setting cues and stuff. I watched that in a different tutorial.
Not yet, but I'm pretty sure they will. Especially since the rubber feet at the bottom of the unit have screw holes to add bigger feet. So something should come out soon for us Turntable/CDJ users...
hello im a mobile dj who don't beat match or scratch all i do is put a channel pod up to play a song and slide up the next channel for a clean fade out of the song thats playing this is called a mobile dj the others are called scratch dj my ? is this we have been using mixers for years we are in the market to buy a controller what is your best recommendation for the typ of djing that we do
How do you ! or can you ! keep the Loop at a set 2 - 4 - 8 etc ... when i introduce Loop it goes to the lowest setting & i have to adjust to 2 - 4- 8 etc everytime How Do i !! When into Loop goes to the lowest value ... can i set it to (for example) to 4 or 8 .. so it is that everytime ? add a loop & have to adjust everytime ?
Hi, I want to scrap the laptop completely, so with the S8 I can do everything to play live and record sets at home (I play house and techno). Thanks this is super objective and helpful. Congrats. Key thing is can I record sets without a laptop. thanks
QUESTION: Have you ever used/tested this unit with Timecode vinyl ? The reason Im asking is that I'm considering on buying it, but I'm really worried that even while using Timecode, I feel that the beatgridding will be off when Im using the timecode vinyl in conjuction with the Remix deck loops. Do you have any advice for a Hip Hop/Urban Radio Dj like myself thinking about getting the S8 and using Timecode vinyl with remix decks?
If you watch my full review you will see the test that I do with timecode vinyl.... I don't think this is really a good tool for HIp-Hop DJ's to be honest... More of an EDM style thing for sure...
***** Thanx for your VERY SPEEDY reply!! I appreciate the tip. Initially I tried to picture myself using this at one of the spots I DJ at with Vinyl and I was baffled as to how the S8 would work into my hip hop sets.
Born2WinBIg77 No problem man, that's what I'm here for! Anyway, I don't think this works well for Hip-Hop DJ's.... I am a Hip-Hop DJ and I wouldn't spend big money on this since I can't DJ most of my music with it and beatmatch manually easy...
Hi Kareem, Quick question what is better S8 or S4 with 2x F1. I am planning on getting mine 1e set and i am having a dilemma on what to buy. I am gonna be playing HipHop, Uk Garage, Afro house, deep house and Dancehall. Thnx
+Sammy Davis If you are going to play hip hop and dancehall, then you are going to need some sort of jog wheels or turntables or CDJ's so you can make different transitions and changes that you can't do with touchstrips. So the S4 with 2xF1 or 2xD2's would be even better! Or you can go with an S8 and turntables...
Kareem, Thnx for your quick reply, the S4 with 2xD2 would be an expensive choice for now, because here in Holland the price for an D2 is 400 euro. The S4 MK2 with 2x F1 would cost me 800 euro. What would be the big difference between the S4 with F1 or D2. What would be the selling point for me to spend 800 euro for 2x D2 and the additional 600 euro for the S4. I have been checking your review so much my girl is like just ask him already.... i was like traktor for me is a no brainer. The Stems and mix deck on the S8 is really sick...but you said in your review that for surtain genre the S8 is missing the jogweel ... but i just saw an review where they connected the S4 with the F1 and then you are able to use stems to, I have been checking reviews for like an year now and i finally made up my mind to pursue a dj career. And all due to your reviews, so i would really appreciate your expertise to start my journey. thnx
+Sammy Davis The only reason I would choose D2 over F1 is because of those screens. In my opinion, if you really want to use STEMS, then you need the screens because the computer screen does not show you the individual stem waveforms... You can only see the waveforms on the S8 or the D2. On the F1, you dont get the same visual feedback. It is worth the extra money, but it still is a lot of money...
Tell me about it...So basically i am gonna be rubbing on the magic lamp for a Giny to grant me that extra 600 euros. This companies man they know how to make you break the bank for there products.. S4 + 2 D2 is 1400 euros or the S8 with 2x turntables..what do you think is best for a beginner dj.
+Sammy Davis If I was just starting out, I wouldn't make that much of an investment into either one honestly... i would get something smaller and cheaper to determine if this is something you really want to do first. Get an S4 by itself and see how you feel about DJing for a couple of months before adding the D2's to the mix... Step by step is best for a beginner because you won't know exactly how you want to spin until you really start doing it... Good Luck.
Thx fi this review... Traktor S8 is definitively the best controller on the market better than the Pioneer DDJ-SZ but sadly doesn't have any jogwheels and pitches :(
My 2c: 1st, it does have the touchstrip, 2nd - unless you were a vinyl DJ once, jig wheels won't help you much - most kids getting into DJing these days will go straight to EDM/House where the S8 is just unbeatable
CoxoPop Yance The jog wheels of Pioneer controllers do not match up with Traktor. Meaning you will have delays and latency issues with the jog wheel when used for Traktor. Buy a Traktor controller for Traktor or a Serato controller for Serato. Forget the mappings...
Looks like a mixer squashed between two Kontrol F1s lol. On it's own I think it will work well for a certain style of DJ but if you got a lot of space (and a lot of money lol) and long arms, man you can reign supreme if you add some external decks. N.I. certainly drops tools to make DJs think ahead into the future and outside the box.
It is still feature relevant but if you already have a controller and really want the s8 I'd wait. Ive had it for 3yrs and i feel like a new one is on the way for 2019

+James Farragher Thank you!
Best review out for Traktor Kontrol S8. Shiftee is sick on Traktor Kontrol S8 locked in the storage unit. I like the unit. Don't need any more questions.
Great review, once again. Hope that they come out with something for turntablist soon.
Thanks Bro! We'll see what happens at NAMM later this week.
Awesome review as always bro. I really like the remix functionality of it, really gives you full control. It will be weird without a jog wheel but you'll probably get used to it.

I understand. Give me a few days to get something together. (Thanks for replying)
hi brother plz can you help me i buy traktor kontrol s8 but it,s not contect on my loptop plz....
always love your reviews, any chance of an s5 review? I'd like to see a walkthrough on control differences compared to the s8. Nice job on this one!
+Matt Swindler I might do the S5 review soon, but thanks for the comments!
Hey I love your videos. Very informational. One more question. Can you mix video with this unit?
Nope... you can't video mix with Traktor...
Thanks for the review on the S8, very useful and informative as per!
Love your reviews, thanks for doing this one! Was wondering about mixing unquantized music with the S8. Haven't seen any turntablists using it, and suspected the size might be an issue.
Thanks man! I think you found your answer then...
So the controller should light up when the power is turned on, because my friends wont. But it will play plugged in Turntables nothing else lights up. Is that a problem with controller or hes no doing something correct
I am pretty sure its supposed to turn on when plugged in. Try connecting the USB to a computer...

I beat match on it it just doesnt have a pitch fader. You use an encoder knob
Thank you again for posting and sharing your review.
Does NI offer some kinda stand that raises the S8 to normal mixer/turntable hight, like they do for their small DJ controllers?
Not yet, but I'm pretty sure they will. Especially since the rubber feet at the bottom of the unit have screw holes to add bigger feet. So something should come out soon for us Turntable/CDJ users...
The flight case

+soul winner for christ There are so many controllers that can do this for you. What software do you want to use?
WHEN I BUY THE TRAKTOR S4 THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH IT DOES IT HAVE AUTOMIX WHERE YOU PUSH A BUTTON AND A SONG WILL FADE FROM ONE DECK TO NEXT

ok thanks

I have quick question. I recently purchased the Akai amx and afx. What could I buy to get more sound out of the amx. Someone said a d link usb device.
Do you mean to make the AMX outputs louder? If so, I'm not sure what you could use to make it louder... Maybe a bigger amp/speakers?
This is a really helpful video. It kinda helped me made my decision to transfer from my S4 to S8
What is the actual size of the screens? They look smaller than the CDJ2000NXS.
I think they are like 4-5 inches each.
***** Is that corner to corner or horizontally?
Shaun Nicholls however standard screens are measured... That's what it says on their site. Same as the screens on the maschine studio.
***** OK, thanks.

I think this would serve me better as a sampler than a Dj controller.
Its both..
nice review! had been looking for a good one!
This worth it in 2018?
It is still feature relevant but if you already have a controller and really want the s8 I'd wait. Ive had it for 3yrs and i feel like a new one is on the way for 2019
So even if I play electronic music, I can only beatmatch using sync?!
No you can use the pitch knob
Great review!
Best thing is these are stem mixers yea ? Making them highly advanced
I might cash on this device. I am doing a official mixtape style project, and think I will use this tool to enhance the experience.
You can definitely do some interesting things with this...
u suggest buying this controller? or its ded?
Buy it if you want to DJ using STEMS
Controller is not for me... but I'm interested to see what NI is going to showoff at name... hopefully a z2 mk2... something for hip hop turntablist
That would be nice... We can always hope...
Man i wish i had one of these!
That thing is huge! Are you giving this away? lol
This thing is pretty big. No giveaway for this one...

this is perfect for me

You are awsome
Thanks friend!
To anyone that actually owns an S8: are there really a lot of problems with sound, lag, crashing or anything else. The NI forums are filled with complaints but at the same time its kind of a dead forum and i cant tell if theyre just a small minority, trolls, ect...
+Docholiday11x I haven't had those issues... Maybe one freeze-up throughout my whole time using it for a couple of weeks. May have been my computer's fault though...
Thanks for the quick reply man. Really appreciate it. Probably going to pick one up then
Having to use external mixers to manually beatmatch is not true.
Look it up =)
It can be done but it is REALLY difficult compared to having external decks... If the music isn't around the same BPM at least, then you are in trouble with these touch strips and knobs instead of jog wheels or vinyl... Try to do a whole gig like that! lol
I like jogwheels better
I don't like the scratch strips
NO JOG WHEEL BIG MISTAKE I DONT CARE WHAT NATINE INSTRUMENT SAY Y LOOKS LIKE THE Novation Twitch Touchstrip Controller sorry not too much sale....

dj prominent of course the layout and screen flow leave much to be desired regarding traktor just my opinion though.
no jogs no way 💩👎💩👎💩👎
Stephen Sanchez i disagree
Ogere Sherk
do you ill do me with some jogs
