    Sony has really hit it out of the park with their lenes this year producing two of my favourite lenses this year. Previously, I did a video on a lens I could easily recommend to everyone for its balance of performance to price, the Sony 16-36mm G Powerzoom ( • This lens gets my high... ), but this lens, the best fast standard zoom, the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 G Master II takes the cake for being my favourite lens of the year due to the outright fantastic performance of this lens.
    In this video, I go over why I love this new Sony lens, and who I would recommend it for.

    Actually, when you add in the different focal lengths the 24 70 covers at 2.8 it 's more cost effective than buying all the primes, add the convenience, weight and not changing lenses all the time. It reduces dust getting into the sensor and work flow.Using technology to your advantage is a no brainer.

    Was looking at 24-70 GM II, but couldn't justify the price compared to Tamron 28-75 G2...but I shoot on an a7RII. GM II is not much benefit on the older body (maybe a bit more sharpness and a bit more contrast) since burst rate isn't that high. Maybe I'm wrong tho since I haven't personally used the GM II, but based on YT vids/reviews

    Man, I’m torn between this, the Sigma 24-70 2.8 or…the 24mm 1.4 GM and a Sigma 85mm 1.4.
    I’ve owned the Sigma 24-70 before and I loved the roll off from the bokeh. But man it was heavy. Nothing wrong with that when handheld. But the 2.8 on the wider end didn’t wow me.
    I feel the 1.4 primes allow for a more stylised image. Mainly, I want a set up for product photography/videography, BTS stills, Reels and Promos for small, local business. The 24-70 offers incredible flexibility. That’s what I appreciated most. But, the look from the primes…ahhh. Butter. The minimum focus is great on this and the Sigma Zoom mind you. There’s certainly not a lack of choice these days.

    Dumb question but how do you know what focal length to use for like portraits and landscape and stuff? Or is it trial and error? 🤔 like 50mm lense for portraits and why or it dont matter and any can work?

    • @MotoMatt418
      @MotoMatt418 Рік тому +1

      50mm-85mm is the sweet spot range for portrait work with 85mm being the most popular. It has to do with the background separation and the way that focal length shapes the face.
      Landscape work begs for wider focal ranges such as 16mm-35mm to get more of the landscape within the frame, although you can use longer focal lengths to really focus in on something special if it’s desired.

    Hi Pat, really enjoy your videos and they have taught me a ton. Quick question - as an amateur photographer who normally shoots landscapes and portraits of family and very little video content, and soon to be the owner of a Sony A7 IV full frame, I am looking to invest in this 24-70 GMII but then I found the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 which is 2.5 times cheaper so which one do I choose?

    • @yongkwon4777
      @yongkwon4777 Рік тому +2

      Most people agree that if you're more focused on portrait get the tamron - 24mm isn't a very popular focal range for typical portraits (although I know, I watched pat's video on 24mm portraits and I totally agree with him too), you don't really get to use 24mm for portraits unless you're super intentional and creative with it.
      so get the tamron only if you're more focused on portraits. I would take 24-70 anyday if landscapes and streets are included.
      If budget is an issue, you should definitely consider the sigma Art too. I'm using that right now I have very little complaints, although, I highly wish to own the GM II :)

    • @mrmonday42
      @mrmonday42 Рік тому +2

      My first Sony camera was the A73 with the Tamron 28-75mm. It's a great lens but the build quality is nowhere near GM build quality. The plastic on the Tamron gets shiny over time and the lens feels kind of cheap. I also was also constantly wishing it went to 24mm. The difference between 24mm and 28mm is bigger than I initially thought. When I upgraded to the A74 I sold the Tamron and purchased the 20mm G, 35mm GM, and 70-200mm GM2. I love this trio and it covers all my needs, but if the 24-70mm GM2 had been out when I purchased these, I would have gone with that instead of the 20mm G and 35mm GM.

      I don’t see why not. I only just got mine so haven’t had a chance to try at night yet. But I’ve done a lot of great nights and Astro on my 16-36gm at f2.8 so this should be similar, around iso 2000-4000 and shutter speed 10-15seconds.
      If you go more zoomed in you’ll want to use shorter shutter speed or you’ll get star trails. But this lens should be good for stars.

    The best of the best is not just sharpness. Zooms are more about versatility. And the Tamron 28-200 is sharper than you it to be, has more range and is way cheaper. Don't get me wrong, I also use the 20mm G, 35mm GM and 100-400 GM...But you don't have to own always gear just because it's "newer"...

      This may be the case, but having the native Sony lens allows for Pat to take full advantage of the accessories on his A1 and possibly A7r5. Can't get 30 fps RAW burst on the A1 with a Tamron lens, unfortunately:(

    • @llStixxll
      @llStixxll Рік тому +1

      Lack of 24mm is pretty significant for a lot of people. There are many compromises in the 28-200 that make people skip it for a 24-70. And shooting on a high end body like the a9 or a1 series will also make third party lenses far less appealing. The 28-200 or any other Tamron lens doesn’t enter the conversation with a 24-70 GMii in that context. Even features like focus breathing compensation or 8 stops of ibis in lower priced cameras start to impact peoples purchasing decision on lower end camera bodies. That’s without mentioning the IQ differences. I’ve owned the Tamron lenses, including the 28-200, but the performance difference on stacked sensors is night and day

    • @matthiasreinhardt8148
      @matthiasreinhardt8148 Рік тому

      @@llStixxll Yes, you are right. It always depends on the needs.
      For me personally, the perfect combination of lightweight and versatility is the Sony 16-35 pz (or Sony 20mm 1.8) and the Tamron 28-200. Especially because the Tamron also develops its strengths only from 35mm.
      But then up to 200mm. It has really really good performance. I make almost no videos, mostly photos.
      When I'm on the road and do not know what awaits me it is good to have more than just 70mm. Especially for landscape photography.
      In general: For me, a 24-70 alone is nothing special. It is neither fish nor fowl.
      Mostly Not wide enough. Mostly Not Long enough.
      My tip is:
      If you want to have shallow DOF or want take photos at night, take primes.
      If you want to take landscape photos, take a lens with more focal length and a fast Aperture is unimportant.
      All new lenses are sharp enough.
      So, Is Sonys new "standard Zoom" the best in its class? Sure!
      Is it 3 times more expensive than Tamrons new 28-70 G2. Sure!
      Is it 3 times better or is the difference "night and day"? Sure not.

    • @llStixxll
      @llStixxll Рік тому +3

      @@matthiasreinhardt8148 your view of the value of each lens is based on your personal use case. There is a time and a place for a super zoom lens. The class of 28-70ish zooms is a cost play. If you shoot fast paced documentary/reportage or sports, the 24-70 GMii will absolutely be worth 3x more than a tamron lens. You can’t make a blanket statement about value when every use case is different. There is a reason these high end lenses are still selling in such high volumes. Not everybody shoots what you shoot and how you shoot.
      I have shot in fast paced high pressure environments with tamron and sigma glass. I have had to throw out once in a lifetime images because they missed focus. There are circumstances where 8/10 performance is unacceptable. Those experiences have steered me away from third party glass when it really matters most. Because a lens may not be worth 3x more money to you doesn’t speak to what others find value in

    • @matthiasreinhardt8148
      @matthiasreinhardt8148 Рік тому

      @@llStixxllJap, I totally agree. It's just for my case. I do not shoot sports. (certainly not in this Focalrange 😀) so the lack 30fps would not bother me. I do not sell or print my photos. But I like good quality in relation to price.. The advantage with a zoom is not to swap lenses. As I said, only for landscape, street and travel I found a 24-70 less attractive. I would never ever pay such a high price for that range to post it on social media 😀

    I had originally purchased from BnH but FedE messed up and made my $2400 feel very regrettable. That was back in Sept 22. Fast forward to Jan 23 and bought the lens again thru a local camera shop here in HI and so far it’s been nothing short of amazing! I’m only using an A72 but I do own the 35, f1.8 & 20 f1.8 G, and I can still tell with my amateur eyes the difference in quality of GM to others below! Now I wish I had a body with a longer battery life but will have to wait till next year or sell an organ. Didn’t have this lens on my first trip to Korea last summer 22 but for Sakura 2023 in both Osaka n Seoul, I’m soo stoked to put dis lens through the ringer.
    Your video set me to get this lens over the Sigma Art and I was already sold on the size and weight but you said it, the price is real! Would be another trip but feel like the glass is more important than the body so bit the bullet again and no regrets… well I’d be lying about the price but I’m okay to live with that! Mahaloz!🌈🤙🏽
