    Mark - as a ex-body-bulder, I really appreciate your approach to the embouchure muscles. It looks like you have some experience in the gym also. Keep up the good no-nonsense physics-based work.

    The PETE is huge for a part timer like me. I take it with me on my trips - it really does help keep the muscle tone up. What I do see is a loss of flexibility after a trip. It keeps the muscles up, so you have a decent starting point to get back in the groove.

    Mark you are just the nicest, humble, and I'm sure approachable guy. I certainly hope to schedule something with you in the near future. My performance anxiety can be crippling and takes away from any enjoyment I could get out of performing. Seems like something you could definitely help me with🎺🙏

    Thanks for the tips Mark. I got one of these and really didn’t know how to use it. I had a friend that graduated from Berkeley Boston and he showed me a trick with a pencil and I’ve used that but this seem way more involved. I tried it with you and my shops are a bit mushy right now. Lol. BTW I picked up an old C coronet to try and play with others in the same key and not have to mentally transpose. The first time I played it .. my ear went wacky like that’s not the note that goes with this fingering. Lol Any advice on making the transition? I’m not sure I can swap back and forth with these guys.

    I’m thinking about buying it bc I’m a freshman in high school but I can play in the doubles. But if I go 3+ days with no practice, playing high is harder and I get tired quicker

    I noticed that when you play, your neck area tenses up and puffs out. When I play, my throat seems tense and almost like it may be trying to close up a little bit, and I've been trying to get rid of the habit. But, as I've seen with your power and ease, maybe I could just make a slight shift in how my throat/neck muscles may or may not be used to produce a good open sound. I think my sound is decent, but I would really appreciate any comment at all on what may be of help as far as my problems with tensing up go.

      Actually, his neck is relaxing and that's why it puffs out. It was explained to me to think of it as a yawn. Go to a mirror, take a deep breath from your diaphragm so it feels like you're filling your stomach with air, put two fingers over your lips so they don't leak, then relax our neck and push the air into your cheeks. You neck should blow up like a balloon as they fill with air. You don't want to restrict your air flow by clenching your throat.

    The circular lip muscle he was working with the large, flat end, is the Orbicularis Oris. The cheek muscles worked on the small end are the left and right Buccinators. There are other muscles used but those 2 are the main ones.

    IMHO I think the disk part should be a bit bigger diameter.? Also another suggestion I’ve tried is placing the disk on the lips like a regular MP and pushing in while chops are resisting. I know ultimate playing is trying to play with no pressure but doing this just as a isometric exercise. Has Anyone else did this? Any opinions?

    • @1rocknroy
      @1rocknroy 4 роки тому +1

      Dan Leudanski sounds like a great MONEY saving idea to me. (I just ordered one.) But if I hold my thumb up against my closed lips as if it is a mouthpiece and 'blow' I believe it does work as well as the P.E.T.E. My opinion.

    I know that the trumpet you use is a schilke x4 but what kind of warburton mouthpiece does you use? Thanks mark and congratulations for excellent work i respect you very much

    • @MarkZauss
      @MarkZauss  5 років тому +4

      Thank you Daniele for your question. I use a signature model Warburton mouthpiece. It is a modified mouthpiece and very similar to a 9EES with a standard throat and standard 7 back bore. Here is a link to the Warburton page with the exact specs - warburton-usa.com/index.php/customer-endorsements/83-mark-zauss

    I have what may be a stupid question. Do you blow air while using the PETE? Or is that just for strengthing the embouchure? Thank you, Mark.

    • @MarkZauss

      @@MarkZauss Hi Mark. On a different topic. I downloaded your range builder exercise. If I can't reach higher than a G or A above staff, what is your recommendation? Maybe just play as high as I can until I build chops? I do really like the exercise. Thanks!

    When I use the second method, should my chin be bunching up? Or should I try to prevent that?

    • @IAMPRUNEDA23
      @IAMPRUNEDA23 7 місяців тому

      Try to emulate what you do on the PETE to what you do with your horn. If you don’t bunch up your chin when you play, try to prevent it bunching up when using the device.

    Why not just use a pencil?

    • @richtraube2241
      @richtraube2241 4 місяці тому

      A pencil doesn't have the disk. You start with the end with the disk behind your lips. I keep my top and bottom front teeth as closely aligned as possible. Pull gently and you start feeling a burn after 15 to 20 seconds. I do this 3 times before I hit the hay. It helps flexibility alot for me.
