I think he was referring to some critics (even if they were in a minority) who compared the Little Mermaid unfavorably with Disney classics from the past and I guess those criticisms stuck out to him. Don't forget that in the 90s they didn't look at movies like The Little Mermaid as "classics" yet, but instead as recent movies who would get compared to older ones that were the classic benchmark of the time.

The thing about Poison Ivy is not the scratching, it's the deadly kisses. I guess the point Gene was saying was that since PI makes you itch you should have that and someone scratching like crazy.
19:27 - that isn't a pointed criticism from Gene. In 1997, his daughters were already 14 and 11 years old. Hardly the ideal age for "Hercules", and if the Siskels were still restricting their kids' viewing habits to animated fare at those ages that would certainly be overprotective parenting.
@@suarezguy To some girls, yes. But most are anxious to shake off associations with kid material around that time and make fun of their peers who don't.
I’ll give Gene that one for Hercules not being in high Disney standards. I’m not a fan of the Art direction, it reminds me of those magazines distributed to Sunday schools, or shows such as Between the Lions or Bill and Ted. I think that the story is compelling in some respects. Less than half way through the film, Hercules becomes the grown man we see in the advertising. Gene apparently thought Hercules himself was interesting.
Mark Uyeda Batman Begins doesn’t hold a batarang to Batman & Robin... Lets analyze it - Batman & Robin has more villains at 3, more superheroes at 3, more Bat vehicles and gadgets gracing the screen, and a waay better cast. Siskel already saw the pinnacle of the franchise when he was alive.
Hey I guess i owe you an apology--I could've swore Head Above Water went straight to tape/HBO but if the two of them reviewed it on next week's show then i guess it must've played somewhere theatrically!
At least it explains why Siskel was such a dick about a classic like Hercules. It's not as good as a movie you think is amazing, top-tier? It must be trash.
And now, at last, it can be told: The sad decline of the _Batman_ films: In 1989, Tim Burton scores a major hit, with his visually striking film, full of realistic characters with interesting dialogue and plenty of humour. Because of all the money it makes, Hollywood says to him: _You just do you._ And _Batman Returns_ becomes the _Edward Scissorhands_ vision of Batman: A disturbing world full of oppressive normals and maladjusted freaks. It didn't fit the fun image MacDonalds wanted for its Happy Meal toys, and so Burton was off the case. Schumacher then delivered 2 films that MacDonalds could be proud of: He cadged Burton's designs and made what were essentially 2 action-figure commercials. Full of melodrama, pop psychology, moustache-twirling mugging, and knowing winks to the camera. Signifying nothing. In response to that, we got 3 to 7 utterly humourless and ultraviolent retellings that have pleased many. I'm not sure how MacDonalds feels about them, but it's clear that the most influential director of the past 40 years was Martin Scorcese. Not my cup of tea, but I guess it sells them action figures.
They've always been a little tone-deaf. And their taste veers a bit _cornball._ (As Gene might say.) They never notice remarkable instrumental scores, such as Danny Elfman's early work. In 1985, they both picked _Let's Hear It for the Boy_ as best song, when there were arguably more memorable contenders on the list. And most famously, in 1967, Ebert's review of _The Graduate_ called the Simon & Garfunkle songs on the soundtrack _instantly forgettable!_
I want to write that my name is Josh Tate and i'm writing that the year is 2024 will be Batman's 85th anniversary year and the 35th anniversary Batman's 1989 Batman film.
Why do they have to always spoil the movie? They basically gave away the ending to my best friend's wedding. The worst was when they said they liked the twist at the end of 6th sense, that was before people knew about M nights iconic twists. If you know there's a twist youre more likely to pick up on it before the end and spoil it. Oh well lol
I thought Batman & Robin and Hercules were both trying too hard that it just got, like Siskel thought of Batman & Robin, boring (and I would also say annoying).
So you're telling me Siskel's tantrum about the ivy not making people scratch themselves was serious? He used to nitpick films over the most ridiculous minutiae.
It always intrigues me in these later reviews how negative Siskel is on these reviews. His negativity on Hercules is so bitter which makes you wonder if his outlooks at this time were constantly negative.
Siskel sounds a little lethargic here -- perhaps he's suffering from his brain tumor or has been getting treatment for it. He died 2 years later. On the upside, the debate over Hercules, especially at the end, made me lol
I thought, a lot like Batman & Robin, it tried way too hard to be too fun and so it just got boring. And OTOH it felt just way too formulaic and/yet also self-satisfied.
Their heated argument over Hercules has to be one of the best arguments of this show, although to be perfectly honest I gotta side with Gene on Hercules, I didn’t even care for that film, it was overrated in the first place and in my own opinion, it’s about as less fun as Princess Diana’s funeral. 😆😆😆
9:21-13:01 They were smoking something or were doing something when they saw this turkey. I lasted fifteen minutes before I screamed for god to kill me and I had to get out of the cinema they were playing on. No wonder 1997 was a bad year for movies
Siskel calling “Little Mermaid” underrated is crazy. It’s always been regarded as one of the most significant Disney animated movies ever.

My Best Friend’s Wedding was one of my favorite films growing up. Makes me emotional just feeling all this nostalgia.
You can see the flare in their eyes the love they have for films love it.

I told Tate Donovan and Susan Egan “Hercules” was one of the first movies I’ve seen in theaters
What did they say
The thing about Poison Ivy is not the scratching, it's the deadly kisses. I guess the point Gene was saying was that since PI makes you itch you should have that and someone scratching like crazy.
He is baffling in his opinions often. The opinions are so malphormed and occasionally, flatly incorrect.
My Best Friend's Wedding was really good I enjoyed it!
"... send them over to uncle Roger's... ...they've fallen under the sleigh of the wrong film critic" lol

I'm guessing that any movie his kids wanted to see with him, they'd go see with him.
A movie like Aladdin, The Lion King, probably still The Little Mermaid would still be pretty appealing to 11 year old, many 14 years olds.

Two stars for Batman & Robin is too generous. One of the worst movies ever made.
00:33 look how he turns his head a little bit
its so bad its good. its funnier than the room. go watch it again. its hilarious.
They seemed to think, feel most of the movies to then were pretty bad, in part from none of them really being about Batman.
Too bad Gene Siskel couldn't see Batman Begins.

Yup. Ditto. Well said.
I couldn't even watch the clips of the French movie about the girl whose mother died. It did seem realistic but way too sad and painful.
My best friend's wedding was based on the Wilson Phillips song "your in love"
Hercules is above average; Woods is wonderful!
the 90s disney movies are top tier. so in comparisson to the other 90s disney movie its mid tear. but its still a great movie.

Probably. He never appreciates music in any film review.

B & R fails because it's aimed at kids exclusively. The director actually admitted that in the docs

I think at times Siskel is intimidated by Eberts intellect and so at times tries to be different even if there is a miss fire or two.
This was in June 1997 he wasn’t diagnosed until May 1998 almost a full year later.

Are you kidding me? 1997 was one of the best years ever for movies. I can list some phenomenal films from that year if you would like me to.
Um... Boogie Nights and L.A. Confidential would like to speak to you.
If their best/worst lists should tell you anything it's that it's kinda rare for a year to truly be a "bad year for movies"
