      Careful, those love to suck up power, and might be more expensive than using a R710 periodically.

    Drives are currently the most expensive item and haven't fallen in price in the 2nd hand market. I think it happens that unlike the other hardware they often get destroyed for data protection and not resold.

      @Edin116 7 років тому +1

      There is also the simple cost of Shipping their weight and the cost of the very materials used in them/that they're made of/Cost to Manufacture (Especially the platters).
      Even now Used 1TB 3.5 Inch HDDs aren't had for less than $30.00 USD used (at best).
      Selling them for any less would be cost prohibitive as the list price would be less than their combined material (A lot of them have Metals such as platinum and other harder/more costly metals in their platters) and Shipping Value... at which point it would be more profitable to scrap the drives (and smelt them) yourself or sell them to a place that does it in bulk.

    In my HP Servers, I really prefer the 72GB, 15k SAS Drives as a systemdisk, in Raid 1. They could easy gandle up to 500mb/s. And used I often get them for 1 CHF in auctions. Best value/performance-scalation.

    Personally I use SAS mechanical hard drives for bulk storage. Before use I do at least 2 of the following 4 things.
    1. Update the firmware. Yes you can do this with some RAID controllers. Even update all disks in one operation.
    2. Low-level format with sg3_utils to enable protection information type 2. This enhances data protection, because it lets the RAID controller know if data are corrupt. Even when the disk doesn't know. It requires a host bus controller to do it though. It can take days to complete on a large disk!
    3. Disable background media scan with sdparm_64. Otherwise the disk will be active all the time. At least the SAS disks I have used.
    4. Enable disk standby to lower the power consumption even further. Most RAID controllers never lets the disks sleep but the disks might have their own internal standby logic.
    I'm not sure points 3 and 4 above are advisable though. Perhaps data could be at risk. So I do them for workstations and not servers. And I test a lot!

    At the moment I have 2x 500GB Samsung SSD (for the VMs) + 2x 250GB Seagate SATA HDD (for my personal files synced with Google Drive - from old Notebooks) and 2x 1TB WD Blue (for movies and stuff) inside my HP DL380 G6 - all in their own Raid 1. Works just fine. Planing to add 2x 3TB WD Blue for additional storage.
    Imo normal SATA drives are totally fine for personal or backup use if there is some Raid1 or Raid6 config. For company use i would always go for SAS or at least enterprise grade disks tho.

    +My PlayHouse, I have a few questions here. I am not familiar with IBM servers. However, on HP servers, as far as updating the RAID controller, the most important factor is that ALL I/O TRAFFIC is halted. In other words, the storage enclosures (That have the controller cards; HP StorageWorks D2700) must remain powered on, but the server must remain connected but powered off. HP utilizes iLO to update firmware & manage everything. Also, I have rarely ever heard of a hard drive not being recognizable due to being too old. Usually, it's the "other" way around. I.E. - The firmware is too old, & the hard drive is too new. Also, using compatible SKU's / spare numbers with a particular server, is a good idea when you run what HPE calls SPP downloads. That's because, these have firmware files for HPE hard drives. However, if that hard drive wasn't designed for that manufacturer, then you'll have to update the hard drive firmware manually.

      I too maybe interested in taking my M4 to 16 drives, I'm unsure of the backplane though, whether it is different to the first. I'm not a great lover of SAS expanders so would like to go down the second RAID card route. I like to use RAID 10 so would be cool to mirror across backplanes as that way you could survive either a backplane or RAID card failure.

One question I have though, is whether it's safe to try and hot swap these drives? Or is that only safe with server grade SAS drives? Thanks again and keep up the great videos.

    • @adlerweb
      @adlerweb 7 років тому +1

      Eran Malloch as long as the controller supports it you can usually hotplug every sata device. Officially its optional, but since the hardware has to support it in any case so Zoe should only run into problems if you're using some kind of write Cache on the disk Level which is pretty rare and mostly useless when using a proper raid controller with dedicated ram.

    thanks for the Video, small question which kind of harddives would you put in a SAN like from HP the p2000, i am thinking which kind SSD or SAS, is more used for Databases access. I am not sure if SSD's are good to put it in a SAN since there is a lot of read and write access on it. What is your recommendation or better to say which kind of harddrives would you use for a 24 slot Storage case. Thanks Chris

    You state that the RPMs of SAS drives are higher than SATA... that's not necessarily true. The maximum RPM, yes, since they make 15K RPM SAS drives, and only made 10k SATA drives at one time, but whatever. The big advantage to SAS is that it sends and receives data at the same time (full duplex) SATA is only half duplex, so that makes it way, WAY faster. That means SAS can read and write at the same time, SATA can only read OR write at a time. DELL and HP are the big evil corporations that restrict the drives they'll let you use in them, or used to. Dell has started allowing third party drives to work without any sort of nag as of a couple years ago. EVO drives in servers tend to burn up. The PRO series drives are OK, but for SSD, it's highly recommended to use enterprise SAS SSDs like the Samsung SM863 or 863A

      Excellent, can't wait to test as I have ordered 4 x Western Digital Red SATA drives for a RAID5 setup. Similar SAS drives will cost at least 5 times as much.

      Hot Pluging is possible with S-ATA even on Intel ICHs/PCH (did this with a Intel X99 PCH just recently, but Power is always depending from PSU, how it will react to having additional hardware plugged while working...

    I was able to throw 2x 50GB OCZ SSD (From May 2010) [N82E16820227526] in mine, and the 500GB drive from a PS4 and it took it no issues.
    I learned that you CAN'T use the screws that you normally used on the desktop to mount it into the drive trays. They are to tall. You need to use that Torx screws that came with the caddy. Which I had to run to the store and buy.

      A DAS is usually an external box of drives that you connect to your servers Raid controler with a cable. And Yes you can make a NAS on a server with a DAS.

    Say question that 500gb EVO SSD that was in the data-center how long did it last before it killed the Naned flash? I get the High IO on an SSD but a desktop SSD in an Enterprise Server, hmm m i understand Enterprise grade SSD's are thousands but aren't they up too the task of longer write cycles?
    So I found this link www.ebay.ca/itm/IBM-System-X-146GB-10K-2-5-SFF-SAS-hard-drive-w-Caddy-43W7538-43W7536-42C0269-/401291288865?hash=item5d6ed32121:g:SR0AAOSwTM5Y3Gdr
    $25.00 buxs CAD drive + caddy.
    I got 146gb 10K 6G SAS Dual Port for 18 buxs for my HP Server.

      Hi Chris Lowe
      The EVO840 is still good-ish. The caddy are often $10 alone!

    • @adlerweb
      @adlerweb 7 років тому

      Chris Lowe if you get a lot of writes desktop ssds will fail rather quickly - I got some Toshiba and ocz ssds failing in under a year with several TB write every day (Cache drive). Samsung didn't show this rate of degradation but the genuine ibm/Lenovo ssd still show vastly better numbers.
      In short: desktop is fine as long as you're not torturing them with continuous writes.

      good to know. My HP rack servers have OEM Genuine HP SAS 10K 2.5" drives. 15k were too much. IO diff made no sense on the cost.

    "whatever tasking" I think that's what I do at school...
    Jk, I have a 4.0 GPA
    also, I would like to make a cheap as possible NAS maybe 5-10tb but with lots of upgradeability, what would you recommend for that? If I use the Lenovo/IBM servers they only have a few 2.5" slots. should I do something like this: level1techs.com/video/level1-172tb-storage-server#page=1? except with a Lenovo/IBM server instead of the Dell/Google server? Would that be cost effective?

      Hi, I can give you some ideas if you wish. Basically if you build your media server or home nas, you should consider a 2 server build. Not cheap in terms of electricity, but if you want upgradable system, consider this way :
      First you need a regular server, doesnt matter what brand, just a regular one socket, 4 core xeon with 32 GB ecc ram. Then you need one external SAS HBA card and another server for example an HP StorageWorks D2700 and at least one SAS cable to connect the servers together. Note that this hp d2700 has 25x 2.5 inch drive bays, if this doesnt fit your interest, than consider searching for another StorageWorks server with 3.5 inch bays. After that you'll need a bunch of hard drives and a reliable OS and file system. My personal choice is the FreeNas with zfs and raidz.
      If you need more advice, feel free to ask me or the community :)
