That Premier is the lowest tier below the Excel and top of the line Deluxe. It really held its own against the custom shop Gibson. Plus, D'Angelicos are prettier than Gibsons, imo.

@@hansvandenhurk7497interesting. Any time that I've seen a model available in all three "tiers", Deluxe was $100-200 more than Excel which was more expensive than the premier.
Very nice. After a few side-by-side reviews like this, I don’t see me ever shelling out unnecessary piles of cash for a Gibson. They have worked so hard for years to create some “We’re an aspirational brand” myth around their guitars, even in eras where the quality clearly wasn’t there. I have come to see, over the years, that the emperor has no clothes. I can pay 30% of the price and get 99% as good a guitar. Or, put another way, I can buy 3 or 4 great guitars for the price of a Gibson that may or may not be any better than the others.

I love this video and it’s great to see the two Mikes together again in a video. Both guitars great but that fuzz pedal makes such a difference to the sound.
I think the D'Angelico held it's own for a smaller body guitar. The Gibson had a more full sound, to be expected with the larger body. I think Mike 2 was a bit better dancer, maybe because of the smaller body guitar, not sure...
I own a 335 from 2014 and 3 D'Angelicos. I grab my Premier DC with Seymour-Duncan P 90s more than the 335. Something about a good P 90 that few 'buckers can beat.

I don’t look at pickup brands anymore. Rather, if something sounds good than it sounds good. Pickups, even unbranded ones, are generally going to be good quality in most cases. Of course it’s the tonal properties that work for you and your music is what matters most.
The Gibson is definitely clear, warm, articulate and balanced. The D'angelico has a boomy lower mid range, that muddys the output quite a bit, overwhelming other chord tones.
I heard a comparison between D'Angelico Premier and the higher line (Elite?) anyway the pickups are much better in their top model.. I noticed the Premier being muddy like you said.
I’ve yet to play a dangelico. But for the passed yesterday I’ve been looking at it for the hollow body. I am shocked by the look and sound of this thing, not to mention the price is the most mind blowing part of it all. I’m surprised they are not bigger in the guitar game. Their lowest model is too tier quality. Great video conparrison
I think dangelico first made a comeback 7-8 years ago. If you look at Thomann, they are now selling pretty good. I have an acoustic dangelico. It’s very good too even it’s completely new to them to produce acoustic guitars.
For the $2000 difference in price tag I'd go with D'Angelico any time. It does the job very nicely, details finishing touches are flawless, can't say the same with Gibson. And they are are better looking.
From Leo: Fun review, the Mike vs Mike 2 is a good bit of fun. And "both" Mikes play some really good chops. After playing several D'Angelico guitars side by side with other brands I chose the SS model, also in Turquoise blue. Very easy and enjoyable to play. The designers really picked good voicing on the pickups. It makes all the tones for a variety of genre'. Good Job!
I’d take the D’angelico over the Gibson. The D’angelico is less expensive but don’t let that fool you. The fit and finish of these guitars are far and away better than any Gibson that I have ever played.
Seriously, the only difference I heard in tone was that the D'Angelico was a little brighter. But only a little, a difference a slight tweak of a tone knob would eliminate.
That was a really fun & lighthearted review. Thoroughly enjoyed & great content for what I was looking for. It helped me just purchase a D'angelico Excel DC Semi-Hollow. Thanks Mike 1 & 2 😂

Tried this D'Angelico at Guitar Center today and it beat Epiphone semi-hollow. Dare I say it sustained better than the Gibson in certain parts of this video...
The d angelico gives the Gibson a run for its money. However where the Gibson shines is the setup. My d angelico premier dc is always slightly sharp on frets 1 to 4. I ll probably need to take it to a luthier. The Gibson comes good out of the box
Gibson sells its name. Expect to find 20 companies undercutting their price by half, while delivering the same or better sound. Nothing else needs to be said.
The only D'angelico I've ever played is the Premier Atlantic I got used for $300. Playability wise, It is currently my favorite guitar and my main gigging guitar. Beating out my Les Paul and PRS Tremonti, the Tremonti is my usual backup guitar. The only complaint I have is the pickups. They just don't compare to the Les Paul pickups. I will be changing them out soon.

I will never buy another Gibson, just a waste of money for a name. Gibson is over priced and not even close on the build quality. The Gibson Les Paul that I bought 3 months ago is also poorly made and is up for sale. Gibson is just bad expensive shit.

First things first, you play beautifully. You must have practiced for thousands and thousands of hours to play like this. Well done. You *very clearly* LOVE playing that Gibson. lol It seems almost like your first love. Your enthusiasm is so obvious. I prefer the size of the mini DC and the D'angelico aesthetic is old-school NYC chic (a city I love almost more than life itself). My only critique is that it would be more honest if you play *exactly* the same tones/riffs on each instrument. I hope you keep playing that Gibson. It's so clear you have such a connection to that instrument.
The Gibson appears to have a slightly warmer sound, whereas the D'angelico has a tad more bite. Otherwise, very similar, and clearly D'angelico had a target to achieve, and at 1/3 the price....

Both of these guitars have the sweetest sound - I prefer the D'angelico but spending more than half the video crapping around with a sea of pedals does not prove a bloody thing - you can get the same sound out of an epiphone or squire using those pedals you list below. Firstly brilliant production I love this as a way to compare two things side by side. Mike 2 is the man!
Confession time. I have played guitar (badly) since 1974.I've never owned a semi. I built a twin humbucker Tele thinline a year or so ago. However I think a ES style is needed 🤣🤣. I'd Kill for that 345 but realistically what I justify and looks, sound wise etc that mini dc is a stunner.... They do it in a fiesta red too 🤔
Thank you for the kind words Graham, really means a lot. The D’angelico really held its on next to the Gibson, was pleasantly surprised when I heard it back. Keep posted if you ever get a semi.
Really it should be a 339 to compare. But there really isn’t anything in it. It’s how they feel and how they make YOU feel.
I don’t own a 339! Haha
@@MikeBradleyofficial I want a 345, I may get one now. They're hard to find new.
Top of the line Gibson vs. the cheapest of D'Angelico? Not a fair contest I'd say... 🤔
I think it's a good comparison, shows you can save $3000 without compromising much
It's just a smashin video, I love the gibson 335 but you know those d'angelico guitars are definitely worth checking out too.
Both of these guitars have the sweetest sound - I prefer the D'angelico but spending more than half the video crapping around with a sea of pedals does not prove a bloody thing - you can get the same sound out of an epiphone or squire using those pedals you list below. Pointless, yet so many people demo their guitars this way on YT
I think Mike is the better player 😊
Dude not fair... that Gibson is a variotone😅
haha.. but i didn't touch it.
These blokes are handsome.
Aww shucks!
Halfway through this and still no johnny b good. If you demo a 345 and not play johnny b good then you are doing it wrong.
That fuzz pedal is like $2k….lol
Not quite! Haha
Much more precision in the Gibson. Maybe you need to hear this vid through decent speakers, otherwhise invest in new ears instead ^^
i’m new here... it’s the same person right?😭😭😭
That is the million dollar question!! 😜
