TRACING 3 PHASE WIRING AND IDENTIFYING CABLES

  • How do we go about actually tracing a 3 phase circuit when all the conductors are the same colour, are all unmarked and all are unidentified?
This is a much more common occurrence that we realise. There have been many occasions where machinery has been moved before we arrive on site. All that we are left with are several unidentified conductors appearing from some conduit, the other end of which is in another part of the building. No drawings, no clues, no nothing. And we have to find the correct cables.
And there can often be many more than five conductors and they all need to be identified.
This video will show you one very effective way to find the correct sequence of the conductors. How to identify wire one at both ends, wire two and so on. It’s not difficult but it must be approached in a methodical and organised way.

Mate, such a simple way of tracing wires. This video has taught me so much. Thanks.

Had someone fault finding on a lighting circuit using insulation resistance and he also mentioned a resistive fault how and what is it and what method would you use to find this I think the fault was an earth neutral fault ?? Any video that could show this would be very helpful cheers

Without knowing what the electrician had found its difficult to say. perhaps ask him to explain, especially if you are paying him to do the work. You are his customer.
Also have a look at this video, CABLE TESTING … CONTINUITY and INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTS, click on the link below

      Good luck, Dave.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a wander lead (if possible)?

Some people prefer a wander lead, this is just one method. Thanks for watching.
