    After reviewing Henry’s X-model 30-30 rifle, we found ourselves eagerly awaiting the delivery of another Henry lever action. In the past year, we’ve taken a closer look at the 45-70 and 30-30 cartridges. The crew here at Ultimate Reloader is quite taken by lever action rifles, as are all our visitors! Henry recently shipped us a new Big Boy All Weather 38/357 carbine - it is so much fun to shoot!

    • @MDR-hn2yz
      @MDR-hn2yz Рік тому

      @@Hialeah1925 I have the blued steel Henry 45-70. I don’t shoot the high power loads, but generally the low and medium stuff like the cowboy loads and Remington green box. It’s not bad at all.
      You get a nice butt pad and the rifle is solid. I would compare it to a 12 guage: you can load it down or up and the recoil goes along with the load.
      I took a doe this season with that rifle and she didn’t run far. I was surprised how little meat was lost to the 45-70. It was a thumb sized hole in and out. My.270 did more damage to the meat.
      The only modification I made was removing the rear sight and adding a Ranger Point Precision rear aperture sight. It’s awesome!
      I highly recommend Henry. And Ranger Point Precision sights.

      357 is interesting in that its an old tech handgun load, its burning qualities are much different than let's say a 556, it maxes out in performance pretty much at 16 in, 20 in is for tube capacity and iron sight accuracy. if you intend to shoot iron sight, 20 is pretty much needed for 100-150 yard accuracy. With a 16 im pretty maxed out to 80-100 on irons but my 20 i can get 140-160.

    There is nothing wrong with "texture" in a hard-chromed barrel.
    The chrome is applied directly to the steel substrate, as opposed to "decorative" chrome as used to be found all over car bumpers, etc.
    Under a microscope, the surface looks like a field of odd-shaped shiny mushrooms. The interesting thing about this "texture" is that it provides a much smaller surface contact and thus, less friction, as the bullet travels over it.
    Contrary to popular belief, Chrome lined barrels still need proper cleaning, because the propellant gas residue DOES get down to the steel in some places. Failure to clean and lube such a barrel will cause tears before bedtime, especially if you live somewhere warm and humid.
    IF the chrome in the bore is "compromised", the high-pressure and temperature propellant gases WILL start to knock a steady stream of tiny flakes of chrome away.. Banging the crown of the muzzle against rocks is also NOT recommended, chromed or otherwise, (muzzles, that is, not chromed rocks.)
    .A friend has one of the Rossi Puma '92 clones in ,357 mag. Slick rifle. The "Marlinesque" layout of the Henry offers a bit more sight options. A "side-by -side" test might be interesting.

    I would love to see the 130gr Federal HST 38spl out of a rifle. How many rounds fit in the tube with the shorter OAL? Will it feed well? Will it penetrate enough or expand too much at rifle velocity in gel? Will it remain subsonic and thus make a good factory subsonic expanding load for suppressed use? I know suppressor manufacturers say not to use expanding bullets through suppressors but maybe you could teach us if it can be done safely. Federal claims better consistency with less air space as well. Please test!

    Fit it with a silencer and and then try several loads from subsonic on up. Let's see what 10 more grains (180gr) can do. Will it take 35 caliber (.358) or are you limited to 38 caliber (.357)?
