    Those are neat old stoves. I had one when I was a teenager that I used a lot for camping. I'd forgotten all about that old stove. Mine worked really well.

      Coyote Works Thanks bro. I really like the stove. It works great. I don't use it much because it's so old and I don't want anything to happen to it. I might take it camping with me once or twice a year. Sometimes I take it with me on vacation to make coffee at the motels.

      These stoves are made to be used. I've had mine now 45 years (bought new) and it is still in regular use.
      The only maintenance / repair on the stove during this time was, about 10 years ago, replacing the Graphite Seal in the Burner Control Valve Stuffing Box.
      The Fuel Tank Valve Cap Gasket needs replacing .. after 45 years, not a bad run. Have ordered a couple via my Outdoor Shop.

      I was in a sporting goods store recently and seen they still make the Optimus but it is the canister type. It would be great if they made the 8r again.

    love that stove there.....don't ever get rid of it, it's way too special. Nice pot set, how much water will the large one hold? I like the watchband as i am a paracord freak. That stove sounds alot like my msr dragonfly....on high it sounds like a jet plane...but it is very adjustable....from one candle power to full roar. Now on to part 2.

      I see lots of parts availability. I like the idea of buying one to restore. Love the brass look. I can't see myself ever "packing" that, but it might be really great on a Jon boat trip to the gulf. ;-)

    could one Heat like is used in an alcohol stove?

    • @BluegrassBushcraft
      @BluegrassBushcraft  9 років тому

      David Fletcher I have used alcohol once. It burnt very well but very hot. I was afraid I would damage the stove but I really don't know.

    don't you have to pressurize it with the pump first? I didn't see you do that.

    • @BluegrassBushcraft
      @BluegrassBushcraft  6 років тому +1

      You just fill the priming pan with spirts and light it. The heat from the pan will draw the fuel from the tank and pressurize itself at the same time. The pump is handy in colder weather.

  • @Patriotman54
    @Patriotman54 9 років тому

    what is the fuel ? will stove this work in 40 degree ?

    • @BluegrassBushcraft
      @BluegrassBushcraft  9 років тому

      David Fletcher I use the crown brand of fuel. It's suppose to be the same as coleman but I think it burns better. I personally haven't used it in cold weather but I've herd of other people that use it in the winter. I think it will just take longer to pre heat it. Some of the optimus have a pump that would help in colder weather.

      +CharlieTango 1 Thanks Ray. I was watching some videos this morning and they makes a small 3d printed cap that you can put on instead of the flame spreader and it burns very quite. It also makes it better for simmering.

      +CharlieTango 1 Just uploaded a video Winter camp with the Optimus 8r. It will be in a couple videos.

    • @charlietango186
      @charlietango186 8 років тому

      yes I have already seen it, I think it was rather cold for it, but did it eventually get going?? or maybe it needed the jet pricking out!! it does state that those 3d printed caps do slow it down on boiling time, but hey!! who's in a hurry.
