The Death of Face Pulls (2009-2024)

- If you had to choose between face pulls and lat pulldowns to build more muscle, which would you choose? In this video, I am going to compare the two and explain the application of each in order to build muscle. Now, you might think that you have the answer already, but pay attention to the end of this video to see if you were right or not.
When looking at the lat pulldown, especially done in the way that not only I show them, but the way that Sam Sulek shows it as well - do you notice anything different? Now compare it to the face pull. Is there any difference between the two? Well, if you keep up with the trends in UA-cam fitness, you should be able to identify it pretty quickly.
What we are talking about right here is long length partials. Partial reps are nothing new, but they are currently in vogue with recent research highlighting the benefits of introducing them into your training. With a recent comment left by a viewer here on UA-cam, the common sentiment might be that the lat pulldown is the superior exercise simply because it features these partial reps. If long length partial repetitions are the superior way to train and they do not lend themselves to use with the face pul, then obviously the face pull is the inferior exercise.
Wait a moment. That can’t be true, can it?
Well, it’s not really a fair comparison. Just because the exercise doesn’t apply long length partial reps, doesn’t mean that it is not an effective exercise. The commenter themself thinks that it’s time to move on from the face pull, but I can’t agree. There is an important reason to keep the face pull in your exercise arsenal.
The face pull offers itself as an incredible corrective exercise to reinforce strength and stability in the shoulder girdle and the muscles of the upper back, including the rear delts. Not only is it a great corrective, it still has the ability to build muscle as well. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at the development of Jesse’s upper back.
Now this underscores the point of the importance of corrective exercises, especially the face pull. Jesse was able to build himself up to a 560 lb deadlift over time, without injury. By attacking the muscles in the upper back and the rear delts, he was able to maintain greater strength and resiliency that allowed him to progressively overload with the deadlift to get to where he is today. If he had avoided the exercise altogether, it stands to question, would his upper back be strong enough to assist in pulling such heavy weights? Would he have stayed healthy enough and injury free in order to continue progressing? Would he have the same upper back development that he does now if he only did exercises with long length partials applied?
Partial reps, while not a new concept, have gotten a lot of attention in the fitness industry as of late with recent research showing that partial reps are able to provide 5-10% more muscle gain than if they are ignored. That sounds like a significant amount of muscle gain. However, if you dive deeper, you might find that that 5-10% is not as significant as you thought it was.
If a significant amount of muscle gain over the course of the year is 10 pounds, then what is a 5-10% increase? That would be 10.5-11 pounds total. Does 10 lbs vs 11 lbs seem like a major difference? I think you would be hard pressed to find that 5-10% increase to be noticeable in the mirror, especially if you have clothes on.
Does that mean you should just throw out partial reps completely? No, of course not. As with most things in fitness, they have their time and place, just like the face pull. It's important to know when to apply the exercise or the technique in order to build muscle. So no, I don't think that you should avoid an exercise because it doesn't lend itself to long length partials. I also don't think that long length partials should be avoided because when applied as an intensity technique, they can extend a set to and through failure.

The face pull can also help you make friends at the gym. You’ll recognize other Jeff’s subscribers that way.
I've made friends by showing them the Athlean X method!
I do face pulls with two ropes, why do people give me weird looks instead of making friend with me then?
😂
Which one is better? Lat pulldown or facepulls?
@@tanmay6367Watch the video. 😆
I remember on one of Athlean-X’s old videos someone commented that Jeff came out of the womb face pulling with the umbilical cord.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Holy shit😂😂😂
It's so true that it is his first memory which is why he became a meme for the movement itself😂
😂😂
There are different births. Let's look at worse, better and best!😅
Haven’t watched AthleanX in years and coming back seeing Jessie got swole af is insanely satisfying lmfao good stuff 🙌🏼
same here wha
exactly my thought :D
And finally he got his beard trimmed lol
Dude, I was just about to write the exact same comment, he's huuuge
He looks amazing!
Jeff Cavalier is the reason why the rope extensions are always hard to find at the gym.😅 I really appreciate your advice about using 2 ropes. (Triceps also)
Swear down, there's always that one group of guys who live on the cable machines 😂
You have a cable guy too? Ours has a sleeping bag, tent and bbq😅
Yup! Now I just bring my own extra long rope device to the gym any day I need it !
I don't like crowded gyms. So, I use a resistance band combination of 40, 30, and 20 lbs, a large carabiner, and 3-feet of thick rope, take it to the local park and attach it to the pull-up bar, and do my face pull sets. The air conditioning is much better than at the gym, as an added benefit. Also, it's free.
@@braddub8145cable machines have so much versatility too a good free motion has no equal, bands will never compete with the eccentric pull of cables
Face pulls have helped my shoulder pain more than any other exercise I've tried over the years. Long live face pulls!
Agreed.
My younger brother, at age 59, still surfs and skateboards. However, it is beginning to show. So, I gave him a set of bands to specifically focus on his upper back and shoulders...after raving about the Athlean X channel that I have been following for the past year.
Wish they helped my shoulder pain 😢
So do we need to do Facepulls or Lat pulldown which one is better? 😢
I totally believe not everything is for everyone. Just find what helps you for your goals.
So basically Jeff saw there was a 1% chance that something out there was giving face pulls a bad rep, and he had to shut it down immediately 😂👌
Agreed, face pulls combined with my physiology (tall, narrow, long limbed) led to massive should pain that I had never experienced before, it took more than a year to recover. The rest of his workouts and advice have worked out well for me though.

Also, I'm blown away by how many 'thumbs ups' were added during watching this video!
Went from 160 to well over 700! What a following!! Keep it up!!!
Our little boy is growing up so fast.
Is jessie an autist?
Remember when he didn't train but just ate gummybears?
Might be the lighting and angle but his back looks better than Jeff's here
Love Jesse's look. The difference from 10 years ago when I first started watching is palpable. Size, style, confidence... Bravo!
I like watching Jeff because he understands sports injuries. Injuries happens as we get older- not intentionally but accidentally. He’s also a fitness influencer that doesn’t look juiced and the muscle he builds is built for function movement. Jesse looks fit and- no longer the test specimen of older videos
This dedication to detail and practicality is exactly why you are THE fitness UA-camr - always the person I trust most for any fitness advice
I’ve been an avid follower of Athlean X for about a decade, and the information here and the many hundreds of videos I have watched in the past on this channel is the very reason why I continue to follow the training programs and be guided by excellent information. The training programs offered by Athlean X are not just about building lean muscle or strength, but like Jeff talked about in this video, it’s about having a well rounded approach to your health and fitness. I’ve seen too many guys be so overly fixated on a single pursuit of fitness and don’t give it consideration on how they should expand their horizons when it comes to this. It’s this message of having a well rounded approach to your fitness that has appealed to me the most from this channel and it’s what gives me so much gratitude and determination to continue the journey I am on. Jeff and Jesse, I appreciate you guys and thank you for continuing to inspire so many like myself, as I have by far the strongest purpose to my approach to health and fitness that I could ever have imagined! 💪🏼😉👍🏼
I was doing Face-Pulls with two ropes. A guy, full beard, no hair on the head itself approached me and said: "damn you must be watching athlean x, else i cannot explain you performing that well". lol
We Athleaners have to stick together. 🤝
@@glynhannaford7332Damn right brother 💪🤙
Jeff, I absolutely LOVE this video. It is evidence you are *NOT* "UA-cam fitness", as you call it. You're a fitness expert who uses UA-cam as a platform to share his expertise. *BIG* difference. Nobody is perfect and nobody gets it right 100% of the time. I have my M.S. in Gerokines; I've contributed to research and read more than I care to think about. I have almost a decade of experience in the fitness industry. There's still shit I get wrong. But I always am looking to the research to learn and tweak my method, of course always with a critical eye. And your emphasis on that is a breath of fresh air among a scary number of fitness influencers that just throw around terms and ideas with no real evidence-based backing.
I paused as soon as I got to the point where you brought up the comment you go on to discuss. This was honestly the first I ever heard of the term "long-length partials" (you can probably guess I haven't watched too much "UA-cam fitness" in a while; the research I tend to turn my attention to, of course, generally is focused on older people). My immediate reaction was to look at some research; I'm always wary of any claims that a new strength training technique is "much more effective" than previously accepted, evidence-based standards. I'll admit it was a fairly cursory look, I did a quick scan of a few individual RCTs and two systematic reviews that dealt with the effectiveness of "long-length partials". And while there is undoubtedly *SOME* evidence they can be an effective *ADDITION* to a well-rounded exercise program, there is no evidence to suggest you can build a program entirely on them. Furthermore, my mind went to "well, WHY is this technique effective?" and the obvious answer is as you say, increased volume of muscular tension, particularly after you reach failure. When I came back to the video, it was awesome to see you go through (basically) same exact process. And then you go even further and bring it back to "why the heck are we talking about replacing one exercise with another, anyway??" and re-highlight the importance of both the biggie muscle builder exercises as well as stabilizing exercises.
Everybody is trying to get big on UA-cam; Jeff's getting us strong. Keep up the great work, Jeff.
Love the in-depth explanation! Been following you for years and will continue to do so. Thanks for the talking about the science!
Jeff…I’ve been following you for years. I’m 59, and working hard to eat, sleep, workout and even stretch according to your instruction. Never even once has what you said gone against my own PT. Why should it? You are one of the few professionally and academically trained influencers on YT. Keep it up. I’ll watch another video on face pulls in 7 months even though I’ve seen…what…half a dozen already
Thanks Jeff for all the great info , I'm 61 and still getting after it !! Face pulls are my closing exercise after every workout 👍
Hey! I just turned 61 back in February. I started Jeff's program a little over a year ago and everyone in my coterie notices the difference. I, too, close out every workout with face-pulls.
Love you two and all the free knowledge. Couldn’t appreciate it more. 🤘💪🙌
Brilliant analysis like always. Thanks for your contribution.
Super background and knowledge …. Thank you again . Brian … Scotland .
Face Pulls helped my shoulder impingement and repositioning of slightly rounded shoulders. They never leave my workout regimen. Thanks Jeff and Jessie
I love face pulls but i handle little bit heavy sometimes my body cant stand on ground or thrown off from weights😂
Excellent presentation, Jeff, thanks so much!!

Woha Jesse your back is exploding! Keep it up 😃
First comment 😅 On a serious note, face pulls have really helped me with my Posture issues and upper body stability. This is coming from doing extensive Pushup routine which I did not balance well with enough pulling excercises, and my shouder health suffered. I understand the simplicity and effectiveness of facepulls Jeff has always routed for. Simple is not equal to easy ofc.
Don't be sad... I love your videos 🤗... Don't get much time to work out but when I do have time... Your work outs are helpful and keep me fit 😬
Watching from Australia find the technical information very informative.Your videos have helped me along with my journey in the Gym
Jesse you are an inspiration for me. Thank you.
Jeff, please do a video on Subscapular strains/inflammation, typical symptoms of this type of strain and your recommendations on working around it, the "do's and don'ts" of this and even what to typically expect for recovery (I know it's different person to person). You have done a lot of great rotator cuff muscle videos but I was looking for a Subscapularis specific one. Thanks!
You're going to have to go like 10 years back on his channel to find videos like that. They do exist and they are still valuable today so just search that specific rotator cuff muscle with his channel name and it should pop up more than one video
@@drip369 I did, I've seen a lot of his videos from way back, I've been searching for a video on this specific topic from him, for a couple weeks now and even the ones in the past don't hit this topic too specifically.

I dont understand why Sam Sulek is suddenly the messiah of muscle hypertrophy. He's just a random kid on a lot of drugs.
That’s real
It's mostly his personality. He's has a super positive attitude

Bodybuilding can be cool an all, but if you noticed that if you put a gymnast next to a bodybuilder- the gymnast has way more athleticism than a bodybuilder any day.

great developement Jesse! Much respect from Germany

Wisdom is indeed applied knowledge. Thanks for keeping a healthy perspective gents!
I love this video set up , you too taking at a desk. Looks clean with the B. Roll to explain concepts
In most gyms I've been too, using two ropes to do Face Pulls effectively is a big no go. There are often not enough ropes and I don't think it's good etiquette to do so. I feel like a complete asshole using two, and resistance bands are often lacking as well. And this is why I don't do face pulls, while using one rope is not giving me the proper form either.
Bring a long towel
Or just do one side at a time, switching side back and forth
@@nomnomyourmomGood idea, might try that!
One thing you can do to feel better, is make the suggestion at the desk that due to the ropes popularity they might add one/a few extra for a better gym experience. Then at least you did what you could to minimize the hassle.
RIP
Thank you jeff for all your videos. They have helped me a lot in gaining muscle and improving my posture.Could please upload a complete back workout just like you did for the shoulders it would be really helpful

Great job! Well said
Jesse...you are amazing and the improvement you have shown is miraculous...!!! JC told me to compliment you!!! lol
After seeing so many fitness videos and applying many methods in my trainings, i came to a point where i realised that the best approach is alternating the execution methods. So instead of just focusing on either the eccentric or the conventional, the most optimal is doing both and also mixing them up. That way you shock your muscles and you improve overall performance. Also incorporating corrective exercises fixed my muscle imbalances and improved my general athleticism and lifts. Fuck around and find out and please focus on the form and not weights. Great content once again Mr Jeff !
Jesse, I love that you have hung in there. The gains are impressive, the strength is unreal. Keep it up, I know this is foreshadowing, but someday Jeff is going to need a stand-in. You are the chosen one! Keep crushing it and bring back some of the old competitions (maybe)...
Way to go Jesse, your journey has been very inspirational.
What a timely video. I've heard so much about LLP's that I felt I was missing out. I even did a few yesterday in the gym after my regular routine. I just watched this and decided not to convert my whole routine to LLP's, which I was seriously considering. I would never give up my facepulls, though. PS. There is no emoji for facepulls. We need that!
Much needed video, people need to realise that progres some not from relentless optimisation on one dimension but powerful fundamentals in all directions.
Thanks for your continued global approach to fitness. I also subscribe to that way of thinking.
