Down under here in New Zealand my uncle had a 280z turbo(a rare car here) .. As a kid the thing grabbed attention like nothing else... It went like nothing else!😲 Remember years later my father saying he had modified it with a LD28 motor crank shaft (factory forged) more compression more boost bigger turbo/ intercooled/ cam etc... Years later I'm a Nissan man... But open minded to all brands and motors... I own a R32 GTR... Amongst other things but will always remember my first ride in that monster z!

One of the big things that always got me is the 28 pound flywheel. That artificial torque so you can wrap the motor up and Pop the Clutch Also helped when down shifting But it also limited how quick the motor could Rev up

Thanks for doing the testing on all these motors. I currently have 500whp k24 nitro mix. And really just got into the 8.1 stuff as I just got a 02 gmc 2500 to haul the race car. Would love to see some cam and intake testing on the 8100 thanks Richard!

Question for you Richard.... Lower compression makes for more room in the chamber, so more boost Vs higher compression with less boost. Which one will yield more power? Of course fuel choice will effect that...

I worked on a Datsun carlot in my early years, there was a 240Z on the used car lot, It had headers and dual exhaust, and loved taking it out every chance I could.
That car Was quick, sounded awesome and would Rpm forever. I would bring it out often. That engine design was great, hence the 260/280 were just bigger versions of the 240. 2.4/2.6/2.8. add a turbo oh yeah better yet.

I'm looking forward to what you do with the L28ET as I have a hand-me-down NA '81 280zx (from my father-in-law who bought it new) sitting in the garage. I'm trying to decide if I'll eventually go NA-T or rebuild it with more compression and stay NA. In any case, I continue to be impressed and appreciative that you continue to bother with doing this work on these "other guys." Thanks.

I have an l28et and used the stock distributor with an haltech e6k ran it for years. the weak point in that motor is the pistons. I ran 18psi on the stock turbo with a big fmic the 76 280z intake is a non egr intake and much cleaner. I spent alot of time tuning the l28et I ended up switching the motor out for an rb25det. I'm excited to see it on the dyno

Best features of an engine: 5 or 6 head bolts per cylinder, 4 bolt mains/cross bolts/or bed plate, steel crank, forged pistons, cross flow head, hemi or canted valves, symmetrical ports, priority main oiling. The more of these features the better.

I agree, for example a turbo LS will start blowing head gaskets when boost goes over 20 psi. But a Lsx with 6 headbolts will hold up.

I got a question, I’m looking at doing a triple weber dcoe draw through turbo as well, and I was wanting to know about runners or plenum. I was thinking given the look of these carbs it’d be cool to do a headers style tubular intake. I think it would look nice but worried about performance. I now the plenum helps with air and the opening and closing of the valve /TB, but would this matter on a turbo engine and where the runners are before the TB and not after.

Back in the day, and that was my days, no one made intercoolers aftermarket for gearheads.
No internet to grab stuff, maybe trucks were the only turbo except very few hand built or European cars.
We did good to afford a cam, a so called hot coil, a four bll. Carb, maybe find a corvette 2 four bll.
The turbo was experimental in the states.
A GM 671 blower was a dream. So we dropped in a bigger cu. Engine. A Olds, Cad.. v8.
If you wanted better snap a 4:11 rear gear.
These kids need a great disappointment like me years ago, a road race cam right from Jim Halls rejects
and a Holly 3 bll. On me 400 small block Chevy pu. Drove it, did’t take me 30 minutes to take it out and carb off. Back to Q it and stock cam. A lot nicer. If asked what you are running just lie like everyone else.

    The combustion chamber sucks.
When the 280z turbo was new
Three of us from San diego were going to Nevada for the ferrari hill climb. I had a 2.4 liter v6 and there were two v12 along we were crusing 110 to 120 the whole way. south of independence a 280z turbo attached itself to us stuck with us no problem untill north of bishop we speeded up passing on the hill
    Never saw the z again.

I wanna do some low buck L series stuff and see what kind of power I could make with basic e85 on stand alone upgrade with arp head studs and some other minor tweaks, I respect the math that says I need better suited pistons, I'm just nervous to dive that deep into one. I have 3 na L series motors and a 280zx project that my goals aren't very hard to hit, objectively as a z guy I think maybe the L series doesn't get built "right" often is because the transmissions that bolt to it dont hold serious power and people willing to do a 300zx or 350z trans swap are still limited by what the suspension can safely grip up, which is its own can of worms, shout out apex engineered, we might see a 280zx hook up with enough sweet aftermarket goodies but so far Datsun z cars can't make grip without a rear end swap and the z community is the as excited about 8.8 rear end swaps as the domestic fellas. I don't think personally we've seen the potential of an L series with a stock ported head, much less with an intake and exhaust. High comp pistons tested vs the l28et stock compression bottom end and then the seeing how the built bottom end handles and intake and exhaust upgrade would probably be eye opening for the L series world. I'd love to see that data as someone with some skin in the game. Thanks for all you've done for the tuning community! Found you from Matt happle and have learned a lot watching your videos.

      @alexunderwood7899 2 роки тому

@@richardholdener1727 I would argue that they could have reached into the parts bin for 50-75 more hp easily. There was a 4.3L HO cam used that made an Astro produce 175hp instead of the 145 stock they did. Also, 91 had the CPI heads and its cam as well. While the CPI cam wouldn't work in a non balance shaft block it was fairly hot for the era and certainly compared to a TBI engine.
Then of course there is the obvious intake/exhaust, but that's where you weaken then engine to avoid Vette owners crying.
I would argue maybe a gn could do that and a TPI would have needed the help of SLP, Lingenfelter or Calloway. ;P
